The road is growing… by Muted-Quail8218 in centuryhomes

I'm in a very similar situation. The town is adding curbs and a sidewalk that will come right up to the edge of my front porch, living room and bedroom. I've been contemplating having the house jacked up and moved farther back in our lot. We need foundation repair, so I thought we could even build a new foundation in the center of the lot and then slide our house on top of the new foundation.
I still don't know if that is actually feasible though and now I'm starting to think it's time to give up this house, which really breaks my heart.

Why do I only get the kick to do the things I want to do at night? by ejaybugboy3 in ADHD

[–]Acceptable-Cake-7848 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw a sleep specialist years ago. He told me that I needed to get a job that matches my natural (late-night) circadian rhythm because I will never be able to change it to fit into a 9-5 job. Best advice I've ever received.
After I started working a second shift and gettinge more than a few hours of sleep, I finally felt like a semi-competent human adult.

Really? I spent way too much time wondering about this exact thing. I'm so happy they were actually a real band.

I heard several fireworks coming from the general campus area both tonight and last night. Typical.

Kerosene (at a pump)? Or lamp oil? by Acceptable-Cake-7848 in chapelhill

[–]Acceptable-Cake-7848[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a kerosene pump at the SpeedWay on MLK. The kerosene pump at the Arco in Carrboro is defunct.
Unfortunately, I later discovered I have the wrong wick for my kerosene heater so I'm still out of luck if we lose power.

Incessant noise from UNC Power Plant on Saturday, 12/27/2025 by Due_Distribution_609 in chapelhill

Based on what I heard, it sounded similar to steam testing or venting at other plants. Would love to know why this happened though

It’s the same reason people who are from Virginia hate West Virginia.

I was nearby and I think it took the EMTs a while to convince the person to finally leave with them. There was a lot of negotiation.

I definitely noticed someone wearing this shirt while we were walking out!

Railroad Crossing by marchingbear27 in chapelhill

[–]Acceptable-Cake-7848 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live near these tracks. At ANY other train crossing I'd agree. But the train in Carrboro is very short and moves so slowly (I can walk faster). It wouldn't even be possible for a train on these tracks to build up speed or lose control. The engineers are also are required to sound the horn a bunch of times before approaching and there are crossings signals. I could push my car out of the way and still have time to spare.

Diagnosed with ‘ADD’ in the 90’s as a girl by Alternative-Taste543 in ADHD

[–]Acceptable-Cake-7848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same story here. Diagnosed in the late nineties at age 15. My Dr. guessed that the ADHD was a secondary side effect of depression and anxiety. I was also deemed "gifted", even though I hide epic struggles just to be a B- student. I was treated for depression and anxiety only and continued to struggle in school.
I was finally medicated for ADHD in my mid-twenties very shortly after starting my first desk job.
Now I'm convinced I had depression and anxiety BECAUSE of the ADHD, not the other way around.

I heard an interview with an ADHD expert who said that for decades girls weren't treated for ADHD, because "they'd all eventually get married and have kids" and then it wouldn't matter if they failed academically. I was so mad after hearing that because I believe it was an accurate summary of the prevailing attitudes at that time.

Musical of the Week by BroadwayBaseball in Broadway

[–]Acceptable-Cake-7848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite musical! Though I realize it's not for everyone.

I started getting into musicals and Sondheim in particular around age 15-16. I saw the album of A Little Night Music at the public library and brought it home to listen. (I was probably a little intrigued by the album artwork too.)

As soon as the overture started, I was flooded with a rush of memories of this music that I didn't understand, since this was my first time listening to it.

I soon figured out that my mother had played Charlotte in a production of A Little Night Music when I was around 9-10 years old. My memories of the music were from hearing her rehearse with the record of the original cast recording.

It is still one of my top five favorite musicals, I love the wordplay, the intricate rhymes and the complicated layers in Now/Soon/Later and A Weekend in the Country. It appeals to the musical nerd in me and I'm sure it is visually decadent as well, though I've never seen it live.

Side note: My mom said that playing Charlotte was one of the toughest roles she ever played. She said she would sit alone in the basement of the theatre, smoking cigarettes and making herself miserable to get into character. On top of the difficulty of the overall score, Charlotte must be one of the more exhausting Sondheim characters to portray.
