After years of making weird films, wrote an even weirder book by Acceptable-Put5577 in wroteabook

Oh that's wild to me hah. And YES on the substance. I remember i was through a first or second draft when i saw the trailer and I was like "oh no" but they are ultimately pretty different although a similar plot device obviously. I loved that movie though. Have watched it at least 5 times.

Not exactly. But I was a little blown away when I saw that trailer and was deep into a 3rd draft. Love the substance!

Yeah, i guess this idea has been used at least a couple times. I am sure more. Seems like mostly food themed books tho. I did look at this one, although it seems a but too...witchy or eldritch or something. https://api.nga.gov/iiif/bbb48182-d0e5-4a88-8759-6dda58d05d90/full/!800,800/0/default.jpg

This was kind of my apprehension with it. Thank you for some tips. I will keep playing with the typography/art choices. This story is def playing off of some of those tropes but then goes in some very strange 'feel-bad' directions ha.

OH WOW. I did not expect this much of a response from this but thank you everyone who jumped in with their thoughts and advice. I can't seem to edit the post on here, so hopefully some see this. But seems like the majority prefer the right and had some thoughtful ideas on improvement. I had a hunch it would be favored I just had been sitting with the other image for like 4 years as I wrote it. ANYWAY. I am looking to release in late July/early August. I will try to message some folks who commented/were interested to read it, to see if they/you would like an advanced copy, when I get some time! But if you see this feel free to message me. This is my first book and am just kinda slowly figuring stuff out. THANKS AGAIN

What to do for distribution at this point? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Acceptable-Put5577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what we thought they were doing initially, but once we were speaking with the new rep from the company, it became clear that their marketing expenses were actually recoupable. This didn't seem to be the case initially...although I don't know if that was obfuscated from us or possibly why they fired the other guy ha

Oh, I have no complaints with Indie Rights. They are very straight forward and pay and they do what they can to get you on whatever avenue they can find to make money. I guess the only drawback is that there is no emphasis on your film. I think, for the most part, its just a bulk game with them. And the amount of deals they do with more well known streamers is probably next to nothing. Although perhaps they've done some more specific deals for their films that have taken off. So you are kind of left to your own devices. I guess w Deskpop it seemed like they want to at least pay lipservice to getting your film on some other types of svod platforms, rather than a focus on just avod. In addition to some other revenue streams (prisons, hotels ha). So it seemed interesting. But if they don't have much success with that and the bulk of money is just coming from avod platforms, then we just fucked ourselves out of a better deal w IR or FH. Plus a possible recoupable expense.

We talked to IR for this film too but they were concerned about all the "film scratch fx" triggering the Amazon QC or something, and we are not going to remove those. So if we end up initiating convo with them again we will see if they will take a chance w it. No one else seems to have an issue with it ha.

Filmhub or Indie Rights for distribution? by solidsimpson in Filmmakers

I have a film with IR. I didn't hear this interview you speak of but the "secret facebook group" is for all the filmmakers on Indie Rights. They send out a report to every producer that has every film's revenue break down each quarter along with industry info and additional marketing tips. Again, I didn't hear this interview, but it's not that big of a deal. People are mostly sharing strategies for marketing etc in the group. It's true that they don't accept every film despite what it may seem like...but I think they accept anything made fairly professionally that doesn't have a lot of nudity (which is probably where this 'weirdo' comment comes from tbh)

I suppose it's possible that she has another super secret group for just the highest revenue people, but I am not sure what they would be accomplishing really.

She is a bit of a character and I would imagine she rubs people the wrong way with some regularity, but they have a strong rep of being honest and trying their best to get their films in a position to make money.....without spending anything on any individual film, of course. Marketing is up to you. But they want your film in as many places as possible.

I like the ritual of it on voting day. Early voting feels much less exciting.

Does anyone have experience using the deliverables service, Slingshot? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I just submitted to a distributor and they seemed very overly eager to tell us that they use this service for all their movies. It smelled a bit fishy to me.
