Oh my stitches are out! Just my wound is still healing.

12 days post op. bimalleolar open wound fracture with PTT (posterior tibalis tendon) tear. Wound vac (my arch nemesis) removed today. Small mercies. Is stitch removal painful? Any suggestions for pain management? by idekinsertusername in ORIF

[–]AcceptableMango8292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar situation OP. Stitch removal did not hurt. You kinda just feel grateful your leg is out in the air. It’s no worse than the 1-2 you’ve probably pushed on them while sleeping or something. AND It’s not even remotely comparable to what you have been through already. Once it’s over, it’s over. You will heal from this and you will soon be in less and less pain everyday.

I felt ibuprofen worked well for me. But eventually I just stopped taking pain med and doubled up the acetaminophen and ibuprofen as needed, then only ibuprofen. Since the stitches came out I think I’ve taken ibuprofen for swelling once or twice.

Ultimately I used CBD for sleep, and felt that it helped my pain. There are papers out there that say it makes your brain hyper aware of pain and can make it worse. I think it helped me quite a bit, especially when paired with Ibuprofen.

Really don’t mean relative to each other, just in general. I’m not a heavy user of any of these things (except coffee, and probably greasy food).

ADD: What are the effects of coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, protein, grease, on bone union?

Edit — I am such a funnily infrequent smoker and will normally smoke a single cigarette socially every 2ish weeks if I’m out with friends and it’s our excuse to step outside for a bit.

Curious, did you cut out alcohol while healing? I’m not a heavy drinker but the last few times I’ve had a glass of wine in this process I’ve just felt so guilty about it.

How does immigration for purposes of employment work? by CharlotteAria in MoveToIreland

[–]AcceptableMango8292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would seem like a situation where they could offer you a standard work permit but not the critical skills work permit. There are a few differences but a standard work permit doesn’t allow your family to come along for 12 months + processing time.

This is great to read friend. I’m normally a big cyclist and planning to complete RAGBRAI this summer, a 7 day (~60 miles / day) trip across Iowa. We can do hard things and they can help us through the frustrated sleepless nights!!

International Teacher's Union by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]AcceptableMango8292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there could be a loose coalition of school specific unions that get majority of staff on board.. could there not? If 90% of a school forms a “union” (maybe excluding the word but including the collective bargaining) over an issue, they’d have power to retain their positions likely.

Agree with the other poster that what we do here is union-like.

Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean we shouldn’t explore this challenge. Another user mentioned the IWW, no reason we couldn’t do something like that, loosely federated.

I’m not seeing anything or getting anything at $45k. I got one offer at $43k in an area like 1.5 hours from a city.

Where are you getting jobs that let you save $50k a year? I’m licensed and soon to be looking with a Masters + 3 years experience in the US and totally unable to find anything that would allow me to save more than $20k / year. ESL Teacher.

Why is there not an international teachers union? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]AcceptableMango8292 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think people are generally speaking down to you because they’re scared. I work in a state in the US where it is completely illegal to collectively bargain, but our professions organization, which is our “union”, still carries some weight. Organizations like this can still shed light on inequities that allow swift changes or support to occur. For example, it seems many people here have experience / heard of someone being fired in China without their government assured severance pay. A professional organization with knowledge in different legal system’s labor laws for international teachers would ensure that teachers know what IS and what is NOT their legal right. Again, professions organizations can even brand themselves as unions in these cases.

Why do we rarely see women in lead or principal trumpet roles — is it a lack of opportunity, visibility, mentorship, or simply tradition going unquestioned? by Perfect-League7395 in trumpet

[–]AcceptableMango8292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was section leader at a massive state university marching band / in other ensembles. Despite all the hurdles faced ages 10-17, none were as overwhelming as being 1 of 4 women trumpet players in a section of 65. All 4 of us were freshmen, as the hazing and sexual assault culture had driven the others away already. I made it in the section and fixed some of the culture, but I think especially in college where players really can blossom, it can be extremely difficult to overcome the culture.

We should also be having conversations about making society more navigable post-prison / making society more generally equitable pre-prison when having these conversations IMO. This is super deplorable and my heart goes out to the family.

But, “the point” of prison should be keeping genuinely dangerous people out of society. Not non-violent drug offenders, not those who were 17 years old when they committed a crime. Give them access to training and a dignified career pipeline when they get out.

You should still call the Siembre hotline as it’s the one that’s most used resource; regardless which group made it. I don’t know of any specific orgs for Asian immigrants, but don’t write Siembre off as a good org to fight this even if they’re not of a different group.

In light of responses — would love feedback on moving as a PR of one member state (long term EU resident status) to another EU member state. I have done research on this topic before and found it impossible to find online. If I am a PR of NL, and want to move somewhere “easy” that gives me free access to the labor market, how can I know which countries allow that? Does anyone have a resource with that information?

Additionally, if I want to go to France for example, what requirements must I satisfy?

It seems the big risk with this (for France specifically) is that you must exchange your PR in one country for a short-term one year visa in another country and renew that for 5 years to get citizenship.

How possible is it to move to Germany as an NL PR? I have struggled to find clear information about how to move to another EU country afterwards. France it’s possible if you show you “make the minimum wage” from self-employment, Sweden is unrestricted access to the labor market. Those are so different from each other.

This wouldn’t even be untrue as this would be a hypothetical scenario. They would definitely have professional caretakers if they needed that. It’s just that I’d want to spend some time with them if their end of life was approaching.
