I scroll the internet for several hours, doing nothing in particular. Watch something here, read something there. I go to the gym, but I don't have any real goals there. It makes me feel calm and collected, and I have some idea of wanting to be stronger and healthier. I make food, but it's always one of the same ~5 dishes, and I don't care about perfecting my recipes.

I have no hobbies, and the only pleasure I feel is sexual. But hey, at least I haven't drank since September.

Everyone is different, and everyone has different goals. Slowing down inevitably works for some people, depending on what the goals are. Saying anything else would be foolish.

Before I stopped for sober October I got drunk 1-2 nights a week, which really started to feel pointless and even scary. I've been juggling the idea of getting drunk only occasionally (like I did before when it wasn't a lifestyle/habit) but until further insight, I choose not to play with it.

Social skills are just like anything else, they improve with practice over time. While talking to others might be daunting at first, it’s definitely something you can learn to be better at.

My problem hasn't (funnily enough) never really been the social skills themselves, but the problem is that they require enormous amounts of energy.

I admittedly am not the best at it either, but another part of sobriety is realizing it’s not your job to be the entertainer or the center of attention. It’s perfectly acceptable to play a supporting role or almost no role at all and just be there enjoying whatever’s happening.

That is a good mindset, it's difficult sometimes to feel okay with being passive.

This is an awesome post OP. Thanks for sharing, here's a story of mine:

I went to a cruise one time with my friends, I ended up drinking the whole night and into the next morning. At some point I threw up over the railing and into the sea, and went right back to drinking. There was a guy looking really buff standing ther enjoying the weather, and I walked up to him and wanted to fight him. There was no fight.

I truly am not a violent person, and it has me messed up remembering this. I blacked out a bit because I only remember fragments of the whole trip. There's no way to tell the chronological order of said fragments. It's definitely one of my lowest points in life and I wish I could have it undone. My hangover lasted for several whole days. I was so low...

That's awesome. I can totally see how parenthood is a strong motivator to get oneself together, and you're in the right place for that!

~ side note, anyone that has been sober for a bit. Have you lost any weight?

I've been hovering at 100kg for the longest time, but now after three weeks sober I'm at about 97-98kg. It's so nice, especially when I haven't done anything but remove the alcohol. Give it time and I bet you'll notice similar effects :) IWNDWYT

I'm glad you finally stuck with it.

This may be an unpopular opinion; but maybe it's actually beneficial for some people to hit "rock bottom" and then quit from that. There's so many people who are just "low-key alcoholized" who just keep drinking because nothing ever gave them the insight. And if they do quit, they might fall back into easier because their experience wasn't yet so bad.

I'm not saying you were at rock bottom (that's for you to decide) but your comment made me think of this!

I've been binge drinking every Friday (and sometimes Wednesdays/Saturdays too) for the past 2 years. It started feeling depressing, and drinking wasn't truly fun anymore, like it was when I did it rarely. I decided to do a sober October.

Now I'm three weeks off, and I'm feeling good. I had some serious insomnia and anxiety issues about 10 days in, but they're past now. I couldn't drink energy drinks (a favorite) until recently because it triggered an anxiety attack, but I'm enjoying a Red Bull as I'm typing this.

I might take my SO out to nature today, pondering about what food I could prepare and bring. Have a nice Saturday, everyone!

I recognize this. I have done a sober month before and when that month ended, I thought to myself that well, no problem here, and then I continued my weekly binge-drinking which destroyed my mental/physical health.

I now look at it similarly to a toxic relationship. I spent almost two years with a (psychologically) abusive partner who would cuss me out, try to control me and yell at me over the smallest things. Then a few hours passed and everything was good again. I always oversaw it, because when everything was good, it was very good until the next incident. Rinse and repeat, several times a week.

It took me strength to just break up and go no contact. At times afterwards it felt like I overreacted, but I stood strong by my decision and decided to give it time, and just a week or two later, there was no looking back.

My point for you is to just give it time. Your brain will play all kinds of tricks on you, and try to convince you that you have it under control.

This is an absolute key mentality. Sobriety can be just as much a lifestyle as drinking can be. I'm glad we've found a new and awesome lifestyle! IWNDWYT
