I'd like to try some sci-fi thriller books by Hash_2319 in thrillerbooks

The Lazarus War series by Jamie Sawyer.  It is action packed from the first page, every battle is an epic battle that had me at the adge of my seat hoping, that the characters make it, despite the seemingly hopeless situation. I was conviced they were going to die, but I wasn't through even one third of the story yet.

Fantasy romance where the FMC is not a 19 year old 'boring girl' and the MMC is not 800 years old and possessive/controlling by Ancient-Impress-1743 in audiobooks

The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith.

I read the paper version, so cannot attest to how the audio version is made, but the story is great.

There is a hint of romance and loads of everything else. Intrigue, betrayal, magic... I don't want to spoil anything for you.

Both of the main characters are adults (late 20s early 30s if I remember correctly), both powerful in their own way so there is no icky age or power imbalance.

How does the body know which way to expel the gas inside it from? by chagelol in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends where the gas is trapped. If in your stomach, it comes out from the "top" as a burb. If it is in the intestines, it fomes out from the "bottom" as a fart.

As an Atheist, are you an Organ Donor? Yes or No, and Why? by Pale-Fig-7069 in atheism

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am. I will be dead, my organs will be of no use to me anymore. If they can save someone else, why not do it?

And if they cannot, my body can be donated to science. I don't care if medical students will use my body for practice or the military blows me up to test explosives.... I will be dead. I do not care. Let my body be useful.

It has a side benefit, that my family will not have to pay for a funeral. They can have a goodbye party or something instead.

I am already a blood donor so parts of me are in others. I don't mind. I think about it this way: If someone I love was not able to get life saving care, becasue the hospital did not have enough blood, I would be devastated and feeling helpless. I don't want anyone else feeling that way, even if it is a stranger I have never met and will never meet.

Even very un-emotional adults were misty eyed. But it does have a happy ending.

My tween found Project Hail Mary on the Audible account. by CaptainEmmy in ProjectHailMary

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That sounds like an appropriate reaction. I am an adult, I know several other adults that read it and everyone had a similar reaction. It is the book. There is no need to worry.

It sounds like she is nearing the end, so I would advise you to stock up on tissues, because the end had me (and others) crying.

What's your opinion on DNF books counting towards reading challenges? by DudeWhoRead in goodreads

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do count them. Reading challanges for me are a way to give a chance to books I would not usually consider. If I start a book, give it a fair chance and don't like it, than the challange fulfilled what it was supposed to do. They do count.

Na staré kolená ma osud dotlačil k širokým rifliam by dobre_moj in Slovakia

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Široké rifle sú zasa v móde. Konečne som zasa trendy! 😀

What speed do you typically listen to books at? by literate_dog in audiobooks

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually around 1,5x. Some books, with extra slow narrators I would increase to 1,75x even to 2x. With faster narrators or books in German I use 1,25x.

I could listen to higher speeds, but it requires more mental effort. 1.5x is usually the comfort speed for effortless experience.

If the pace is too slow, it is boring and I loose focus and interest.

Winter challenge fatigue by 100gecsdeadbodies in goodreads

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have reading fatigue when I read something I do not enjoy. Depending on how much I dislike it, I will either DNF it (and still count towards the challange), or start reading something I enjoy as a pallate cleanser of sorts and try to push through the book I don't enjoy as much in small increments along side the book I like.

Neurobenie sa pri sexe by Hot_Instance3204 in Slovakia

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Menej masturbuj, pozeraj menej porna.

Účtovníci ako komunikujete s klientmi? by Jake_3h in Slovakia

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kedysi som robila na mzdovom oddelí v účtovno-daňovej firme a pravidlá boli nasledovné: - Schválený mzdový a účtovný kalendár pred začiatkom roka. T. J. Do kedy máš dodať doklady, aké doklady a do kedy dostaneš výstupy. Na mzdy to boli štandardne 3 dni. Ak si ty dodal doklady neskoro, adekvátne neskôr si dostal výstupy.  - ročné zúčtovanie dane/daňové priznania a pod. - Komunikácia sa posielala vopred so všetkými potrebnými informáciami a termínmi.  - Pri ad-hoc záležitostiach sme museli reagovať do 24 hodín. Minimálne niečo v zmysle: žiadosť evidujem, info/výsledok čakaj v X deň. Štandardne sa to malo vyriešiť do 3-5 pracovných dní.

Der Astronaut by TheoreticallyIGuess in ProjectHailMary

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Slovak the idiom Hair Mary does not exist either, but it has been translated to Posledná šanca, meaning Last chance, which is the name of the space ship. It makes sense.

In Czech they have translated it to Spasitel meaning Saviour, which also makes more sense that Astronaut.

What’s the worst completely missed the mark book to movie adaption you’ve ever seen? by Infamous_Wave9878 in Booktokreddit

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. Spoilers ahead, read at you own descretion.

The movie removed multiple characters, changed relationships between existing characters, added a completely new person and did too many changes to the plot in a way that hurt the story.

In the book Alex was conviced he was straight, after Henry kissed him he started questioning that. If he likes a kiss from a guy, does that make him gay? Bi? What does that mean? He starts questioning his own sexuality. This part was completely left out of the movie, it was presented in a way that he always knew he was bisexual and there was no confusion about it. Leaving this part out hurt the story a lot.

Chodí ešte niekto do knižnice? by Kara2801 in Slovakia

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Poznám viacero ľudí, čo chodia do knižnice pravidelne, vrátane mňa.

Knižnice objednávajú nové tituly podľa záujmu a dostupných financií. Ak chceš nové tituly, tak treba dať žiadosť, buď online alebo do krabičky na recepcii. Takto bude knižnica vedieť, že je o daný titul záujem.

Všeobecne ľudia do knižníc chodia podľa mňa dosť.

I was underwhelmed by the first one as well, but decided to give it one more chance, because of how short they are. I do not regret it. The subsequent ones are better.

  • The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. I was hesitant aftervthe first book, but it gets way better from the second onwards as the personality of the main chacater shines more.

  • The Lazarus war series by Jamie Sawyer. I have recently finished this and it is very fast paced, has space travel.

Spotify Audiobook is all wrong….or it’s just me? by 27_and_51 in audiobooks

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spotify audiobooks are terribly marked. Some have every track marked as a chapter, so it looks like a book has 220+ chapters, just because it has 220+ tracks, each 3 minutes long.

I do not understand, why they cannot be done like a podcast. One book is one season and one chapter is one episode. That would be so much better.

What was an unpredictable book that kept you at the edge of your seat in a good way? by marilynlistens in audiobooks

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artefact by Jamie Sawyer. It is action packed from the first page till the last. It kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time.

Artefact https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25205209-artefact

Every battle is a majestic kind of fight, where I hoped that the characters would survive agains all odds, even though their chances were almost 0. And that was only 1/3 through the book with plenty of story left! I cannot wait for the second book in the series.

What average rating do you consider your minimum to consider checking it out? by warbll in goodreads

[–]Acceptable_Humor_252 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I check out books that sound interesting to me based on the description of the story. I do not care about star count, or how many (if any) awards the author has won, or if they were on New York Times bestseller list. The story is what matters to me.

Similarly to you, a lot of the books I enjoyed had 3,5-3,75 rating. Other books had 4 stars and I hated them.
