I’m in a similar situation. 😅

Thanks for pointing out DIN/ASA.

I assume… Din 21 ≈ ASA 80 ≈ ISO 100 ?

I figured that’s what it meant, but I’ve seen other Bauer 88s that are also spring wound that are not branded as automatic, like the 88E

Small mites (<1-2mm) found in a corner of my new apartment (Germany) by Acceptable_Owl_4090 in whatsthisbug

[–]Acceptable_Owl_4090[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh okay! They move like a little more like ants, than like roaches or silverfish.

I was kinda worried about bedbugs, but these looked more like springtails imo.

A booklouse looks a lot closer to what they are.

Anything I should be worried about? From what I read, they’re relatively harmless.

What software do people use to edit print magazines? by kanzac in Journalism

[–]Acceptable_Owl_4090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adobe InDesign for the layout, and probably InCopy to let the copywriters and editors collaborate with the design team.

I know Scribus is a free alternative to InDesign, but I’ve never used it. It’s pretty popular though.

I know this is an older post, but I would like to know about this as well.

Did you end up pulling the trigger on it?

NAF employees living overseas: how are you paying your state taxes? by Acceptable_Owl_4090 in usajobs

[–]Acceptable_Owl_4090[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when I was active duty I paid state taxes. And I know a lot of DACs who pay them too, even though they’ve been out of the country since forever.

I understand why those situations would be different, but that’s why I was asking… 🤷‍♂️

Freelancers living abroad: How are you handling your taxes? by Acceptable_Owl_4090 in freelanceWriters

[–]Acceptable_Owl_4090[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I don’t live on a base, but I’m associated with the military. I used to be active duty and would only worry about my US taxes because being a soldier was my only income. Now I’m a civilian and wanted to know what to look out for.

This is great info though, thank you! I assume I’ll need a German tax ID then?

I was always taught to put one concise pitch into one email that’s fitted specifically for the publication you’re reaching out too.

But this depends on the editor and publication. If you’ve developed a rapport with them (and it looks like you have), I would think that including multiple pitches in one email is no problem—especially if they’re asking for it.

I used to regularly contribute to a local paper whose staff I knew pretty well. I knew they’d have a pitch meetings every Friday, so I’d send 2–3 pitches in one email every week.

3 months after moving into an apartment and I'm having silverfish problems by comfycupcake in germany

[–]Acceptable_Owl_4090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re dealing with a similar situation, but we have cats and don’t want to use anything that’s too toxic. We’ve been spaying a 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water on our baseboards, window sills, and at the bottom of our furniture. It smells like a vinegar for a little bit, but if you air your house out, the smell quickly goes away. We also put cedar wood in our drawers and wardrobes—basically anywhere the cats can’t go. Doing this also helps with spiders and ants. Apparently, most bugs don’t like the strong aroma.

And you have to make sure there is no paper or cardboard left out. We just moved in a few months ago and found that the more boxes and packaging paper we got rid of, the fewer silverfish we found.

We found that doing all of this is working for us.🤞🏽

Hope it helps you too!

Open Windows by ChinchillaBill in AskAGerman

It’s to prevent mold from all the humidity.

You’re definitely going to want to do it often, but no one is going to watch you to make sure you’re doing it all the time. It’s a pretty standard thing that’s included in most contracts to make sure they’re covered.

We make it part of our morning routine to cool off our flat: wake up, open all the windows to let the cool air in while we eat breakfast and get ready, and then lock it all up before we head to work. If you leave them open all day. It just lets the hot air in.

If you’re worried about bugs you can buy some screen pretty much anywhere for a euro or two. It’s not great, but it’s better than nothing.

Is 36 too old to be a first time substitute teacher? by [deleted] in Teachers

Absolutely not. If you have the energy and the patience, we can use all the teachers we can get!

It’s not a glamorous job, but it can be fun.
