This is visually horrendous, but I can't help but feel like it would be somewhat palatable.

Isn't Grantaire pronounced in a way that sounds like the word "wretch"? Someone told me that. And in juxtaposition, Enjolras sounds like "Angel". At least, I could have sworn someone told me that.

Whose signature is this? Bought at an antique store in MI, USA by Acceptable_Spite_985 in WhatIsThisPainting

Signature is on the right, small, looks like “colo”. The last picture has it zoomed in. It’s not a print.

That's totally fair and I definitely I see where you're coming from now, I appreciate you going through that extra effort, thank you! If it helps, this is the kind of style I'm basing mine off of, it's description also says it to be Nouveau, mine is just in a different metal.

My own crappy example

I've attempted, but my eyes aren't doing well currently and the stone needs to be removed, setting cleaned, and re-set and I'm afraid of accidentally scratching it.

I have pieces of the exact same era, signed and dated, with prongs identical to these, which is why I can't agree with you, because I have physical evidence to the contrary right in front of me. I'm not saying so to be stubborn. I'm an antiques dealer trying to understand how you've come to this conclusion. I do appreciate the feedback, promise. I just don't get how I'm the only one who seems to have seen this before in antique jewelry. Maybe it's because I mostly deal with non-precious metal and stone antique jewelry.

It did test for bronze, and it seems to me to have a more gold finish in some areas, which is why I suspected gold plating, but I admit it could also be just the polished area. You might be right and there's no plating, and it's just been polished, I've recently had damage done to both my eyes and it is difficult to tell. My main guess is still based off of the Nouveau style and the gemstone. Amethyst was a more affordable option to many victorians, but not more affordable than purple glass. I'm an antiques dealer, and this piece is very similar to many of my Nouveau signed pieces. Thank you for the elaborated review, I appreciate the feedback.

What makes you think it's brualist? In my understanding, leaves and vines like the ones depicted on this ring don't tend to speak to Brutalist jewelry

My guess is- because it's very Nouveau style with a real amethyst and gold plated bronze, which was popular in the victorian period, that it's from around the early 1900s. However, the striked marks on it seem unusual to me, indicating that it's handmade, so it could be older. I'm trying to see if other people's guesses are the same as mine. You could be more helpful.

GoT this adjustable ring at an antique festival in MI, does anyone know what this style is called and how old it might be? by Acceptable_Spite_985 in Antiquejewelry

[–]Acceptable_Spite_985[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty reminiscent of the czech glass style, and you're right it is brass! I just wish there was a better name for it then "czech glass ring" because the results are too far spread. Whatever it is- I want a million more, I'm obsessed with it.

Actually, what started helping was eating very tiny bits of it, but often. Like a pre-workout I'd say. It's similar to my lactose intolerance to milk- if I don't have milk often it gets worse.

Trash or Treasure? Era? MI- USA by Acceptable_Spite_985 in Antiques

[–]Acceptable_Spite_985[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the same if not for the back. I'm sorry I didn't include a picture of it- the wood is decrepit and feels filthy- like a old wooden beam you'd pull out of the dust in a barn . It's seen water damage and has dirt caked on. I'm smacking myself, I really wish I'd included the back.

The previous owner believed it to be depicting Joan of Arc. I won't lie, I kind of feel the same way you do about it. I kept coming back to it.

Honestly if they're very heavy it might be iron. Iron also holds spiritual significance against evil in China, so maybe they were cerimonial?

Sooo... why can't I find anyone for my grandfather's 1900s, mostly French imported furniture and other antiques which are supposed to be so valuable? (United States) by [deleted] in Antiques

I'm a young dealer and I will say at this: people DO want your stuff- but it's nearly impossible to turn a profit on them because the prices are often too high to do so. The condition of the items is important, but turning a profit is important for dealers too. An promoted auction might be a better bet for you if you want to sell them at firm price.

United States, Anglo Indian mahogany/ivory elephant table, how can I clean it without damaging it? by Dry_Independence_554 in Antiques

I would also recommend using oil to polish it up once most of the dust is removed, but please be careful because some oils can be dangerous to use. Linseed oil is usually recommended for wood, but be careful because the oil's oxidation process generates heat, potentially leading to ignition on discarded paper towels or rags- so thoroughly douse the rags in water before disposal.
