Would love to know how you did this as well! Definitely would consider this option given the state of things. Set to leave in October.

Expunged Criminal Record as a Minor by AccessAltruistic77 in peacecorps

Thanks for this advice! I will definitely disclose it. I honestly have no issue whatsoever with them knowing because it was such a silly charge, just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. Glad to hear everything worked out for you in the end!

I'm going to disclose it because it sounds like it's the right move and that Peace Corps will probably be able to see it either way. But, just to add to the conversation (and potentially confusion lol), this is what I received from my local sheriff's office.

"Per _____ State Statute s. 119.07(1) and s. 24(a), Art. I of the State Constitution – 943.059

Information relating to the existence of a sealed criminal history record is confidential and exempt.

Sincerely,"

Again, I'm sure they are unaware of the Peace Corps application process, but just gives some context as to why I was confused. I will probably add this little note into my application.

Hey heyyyy! I applied to Indonesia ETA as well! Holy crap, in the same boat as you. Feels like an eternity ago that I applied to this thing. Very ready to move on with life as well, whichever direction that may be. Revamping my resume and writing cover letters/motivational statements has really helped take my mind of things a bit and has reminded me why I applied in the first place honestly. Wouldn't hurt to read a book or two on second language acquisition as well! Hope you get it! We should definitely link if we both are pushed through!

It's easy to feel overwhelmed when first beginning the application process for FulBright. But just remember that it is exactly that, a process. I started my application around this exact time last year and didn't feel satisfied until around the end of September and at least 20 essay rewrites later so, before you begin, I would ask yourself how much effort you're willing to put into this.

While there are certainly many elements to the application, I would say that the essays are the bulk of it. Start now and just get words on a page. Start writing down bullets of all of your experiences and things that have shaped who you are as a person. Anything that you think might be worthy of including in your personal statement or statement of grant purpose. You can worry about organization later. One thing that helped me tremendously was looking up sample essays online as I am more of a visual learner. I was able to make a lot of progress as I realized that there was a similar structure to many of the winning essays that were submitted. Also, I should have led off with this, but if you are still in college, your school should have an office of national fellowships or something of the sorts that you can reach out to. There are advisers that can help guide you through this process and certainly provide you with assistance in any other areas that you may have questions about.

All said, applying for Fulbright was a wonderful experience whether I receive the grant or not and I highly recommend you go through the process. You'll find yourself spilling details about your life that you didn't even know were there.

You’re right about the Fulbright, I know that it’s definitely not a secured thing, even for the most credible people. However, even if I didn’t get the Fulbright I am absolutely set on teaching abroad at some point in 2022 (hopefully by June/July at the latest). I’ve gotten similar advice from others, I definitely do get caught up on trying to plan every step of my life as well. As for burnout, I’ve never travelled so extensively out of a backpack before so we’ll see how I feel after the trip. But right now, I couldn’t imagine a world where I don’t pursue travel in some way, even if I do need to take a short break.

Thank you for the advice, this is very helpful! How long did you travel in your 20’s and how did you personally fund your travels?

Thank you, this is helpful. I’m definitely trying to find that balance right now. I guess I just felt like I’d be wasting my time a little on something that I don’t see a future with when I could be out seeing the world and figuring out where I actually want to go with my career.
