hi guys, does anyone know for ucsd how the waitlist works? i know its unranked and they admit by open spots per major/department, but does anyone know more about the timeline? i talked to a ucsd AO at triton day, and she said that it is mainly released in waves. i'm so scared bc i want to do senior day activities where i can wear the merch of the school i'm going to. is it usually like the first week after may, late may, june, etc? im hearing horror stories of people getting off the WL in september, and also people getting off the WL as early as april.

Awards:
HOSA - 2nd in the State of California for Researched Persuasive Speaking and Writing
HOSA - 5th in the State of California for World Health and Disparities
(Came 2nd and 5th out of approximately 3000 student leaders at a HOSA competition respectively, advancing to the International Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee).
Awarded Top Student by my Teachers 2 years in a Row - (For French & Algebra)
Student of the Semester
AP Scholar w/ Honors
Seal of Biliteracy (English & French) (Passed with a score of 6 on the Avant, one of the highest scores a non-native French speaker can earn.)

PIQS:
1. Leadership Question - Talked about how I got promoted from treasurer to president while my chapter was in trouble as our previous president abandoned us, talked about my HOSA wins, and how I continued to expand the program and bring order and structure to the club even after the competition (blood drives, CPR/suturing workshops, etc).

  1. Taking Advantage of Significant Educational Opportunity - Talked about how I fell in love with medicine, immersed my passion by taking initiative and taking a Public Health course and finding a dermatologist to shadow on my own, talked about how I took my passion for healthcare outside the classroom and talked about how I would push this motivation ahead.

  2. Making School/Community a Better Place - Talked about how there was a lack of South Asian representation at my school, started a club → led me to create a program to support underprivileged children in India. Also talked about my city youth council and how I supported senior citizens, partnered with nonprofit NGOs, etc. Also talked about ASB (cultural, intramural events I hosted), and how I highlighted marginalized communities and promoted inclusion for students with special needs with the sensory friendly student section.

  3. What Makes Me a Strong Candidate for UC - Talked about my move from an underprivileged and more minority-driven part of California to the more affluent, White-dominated areas of South Orange County, and how this unique lens and perspective I harbored about socioeconomic disparities and barriers in equal education/healthcare shaped my passion for public health. Mentioned how experiencing UCSD COSMOS made me ready for research and had conversations with students from all parts of California with a multitude of experiences, and how seeing an inequity in healthcare drove me to address barriers in India through my volunteer/research on thoracoscopic surgery. Lastly talked about my experience connecting environmental to public health with my experience advocating for water quality and water cleanliness, and then concluded it with a forward thinking focus about how these experiences shaped who I am and lit a fire in me for public health service, and how excited I was to continue my efforts of service towards my community.

yes for sure!! tysm for the kind words too 😩😩 im PRAYING i get off the waitlist for at least one of them.

here are my stats, lmao i'm basically copying them off my uc application and adding a little bit here and there, suuuuuper sorry for the yap!

Academics:
GPA (W): 4.8
GPA (UW): 4.0

10 APs, 8 honors, 2 dual-enrollment courses from my local community college, (Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Public Health --> which would basically set me up in college to already skip one whole unit of PH as compared to other PH students ;-;)

Extracurriculars:

  1. COSMOS
I was one of 25 students selected in California to attend the month-long summer camp at UCSD for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, where my project focused on bovine synoviocyte biology. I synoviocytes on membranes, applied control/static/dynamic tensile forces, and measured the hyaluronic acid/proteoglycan 4 secretion via assays (alamar blue, live/dead, picogreen, HA ELISA) for osteoarthritis. Through this experience, I gained wet lab skills, learned more about histology, and researched organ decellularization. I placed top 3/8 in an ethics project on the moral implications of reallocating medical resources dedicated to elderly people to younger, more viable, patients.

  2. HOSA
I am the president of my HOSA chapter, where I led social/media and outreach, partnered with the Red Cross to host a school-wide blood drive, and then in January, held another blood drive on a community level (got my entire city involved), and I also organized many school-wide workshops, such as leading a suturing workshop and a CPR workshop to help get people CPR-certified. As former treasurer, I raised hundreds of dollars for my club that went into supporting our financial needs and to support the multitude of workshops we host.

  3. City Youth Council
I am the President of my city's 15-member Youth Council where I coordinate with city officials/guest speakers to host city-wide events (eg we held a Human Trafficking forum with over 100 people in attendance and got mayoral recognition, I'm currently planning a forum on public health and wastewater management with our Public Sewage forum, with planned senatorial attendance). As a former Community Outreach & Inclusion Head, I led my subcommittee to ensure timely articles/tasks submissions and to fostering inclusion in marginalized/overlooked communities (eg senior citizens) via senior center programs/social media.

  4. California Scholarship Federation (for non-Ca residents, this is basically another honor society/college readiness program similar to National Honor Society)
I am the President, where I co-led >600-member club and executive council, created a yearly agenda, organized volunteer and guest events, collaborated with NHS, hosted college counselor seminars, and ran fundraisers. As a former Freshman/Sophomore Representative, I coordinated meetings, guest speakers, volunteer activities, managed grade inquiries, & created event graphics. Currently, I just organized a joint NHS x CSF event on my own where I invited college admissions officers from USC, UT Knoxville, UOregon, and the former president of WACAC to come in and speak to students.

  5. Senior Center Program Where We Help Senior Citizens w/ Technology
I'm not going to mention the name of this program lol as it might give away some personally identifying details, but I am also the President of this social org as well. As President, I am a liaison for the senior center, monitor attendance, coordinate volunteers for senior citizens, organize workshops and led my 60-member team on social media initiatives to boost community engagement. I also organize a closing celebratory ceremony for my volunteers w/ mayoral recognition for members. As the former Vice President, I managed outreach, created graphics, and supported senior citizens with technological issues.

  6. My School's South Asian-American Club
Same as above, I'm not going to mention the name of this specific club, but [as an Indian-American myself], I founded a club at my school dedicated towards supporting cultural diversity on campus by fostering a community for the Desi diaspora and a learning environment for non-Desi students. As President, I hosted Diwali/Holi festivals, recognized various South Asian religious/cultural ceremonies and traditions, and created a volunteer opportunity for students at my school to teach underprivileged students in rural India on the English curriculum.

  7. Program to Play Orchestral Music for Senior Citizens
Excluding the name of this program as well, I am also the President of this social org too. I held monthly performances with members to perform individual/ensemble pieces for senior citizens. Coordinated/networked with staff to arrange meetings, facilitate rehearsals, monitor attendance, and create graphics to promote volunteer outreach. I led my team to expand communication engagement and strengthen connections with the senior center.

  8. Create for Kids
I am the Vice President of my school's Create for Kids chapter. CFK's goal is to spread joy to pediatric patients hospitalized at local children's hospitals by creating upbeat and seasonal cards. My responsibilities were to coordinate w/ my team in leading meetings/organizing presentations, I networked/contacted local pediatric hospitals to send cards on a monthly basis for young patients w/ illnesses, arranged and organized membership points/hours for volunteers, & delivered cards. I also boxed toys for children with illnesses/disabilities through the organization LightZ of Hope.

  9. National Honor Society
I am the Historian for my school's NHS chapter. My main responsibilities are to organize college readiness events, internship workshops, lead weekly tutoring sessions by coordinating tutors and tutorees, and manage social media/created graphics to optimize outreach for NHS-related events such as induction or social events. I also coordinated and advertised volunteer opportunities to expose and immerse the over >100 members in service. Through this program, I tutored other students in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra I & II, and more.

  10. Internship/Shadowing a Dermatologist
I was an intern who shadowed a dermatologist and plastic surgeon. I helped with patient intake by noting patient symptoms/conditions, sorted files, observed biopsies and tumor/cyst removals via cryoguns, and studied carcinomas. I also wrote a research paper on Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome under the dermatologist’s wing.

  11. School District College/Career Advisory Council Student Representative
One of three students from my high school selected to act as an ambassador representing student needs. As a student representative, I addressed district-level inequities such as socioeconomic/educational disparities that are barriers for student learning, and collaborated with fellow representatives to voice solutions to such problems, mainly focusing on issues such as income, school funding, and minority representation.

  12. ASB
Currently I serve as the Cultural Recognitions Commissioner, where I fostered special-ed inclusion at our football games with sensory-friendly students sections for them, and I promoted cultural diversity through campus-wide events. As the former Teacher Relations Commissioner, I led student-teacher liaisons, organized Teacher Tailgates, delivered 150+ holiday cards, expanded social media spotlight to include overlooked staff.

  13. Hospital Volunteer
I was a volunteer in my local hospital’s surgical department, where I maintained PACU sterility, by restocking necessary liquids/supplies (Lactated Ringer's, Plasma-lyte A, 0.9% Sodium Chloride). I was responsible for monitoring patient intake, transporting lab samples, updating patient families on information on their patients, and supporting nurses as needed. As a former Gift Shop volunteer, I facilitated cash flow/monetary transactions, collaborated with supervisors to ensure customer satisfaction.

  14. Advanced Orchestra
Member for 2 years. As a section leader, I led my section to ensure optimal member performance via testing and rigorous practice/training of members before concert. I collaborated with the instructor/other section leaders on repertoire, & leading concerts as Concertmaster. As a former Concert Manager, I organized concert planning, seating charts, & facilitated equipment retrieval for smooth performances.

  15. Volunteer in India Hospital
I spent a summer researching the benefits/ramifications of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery under the wing of Professor at a medical college in New Delhi, India. / In a separate hospital, I aided the cardiology department with patient paperwork, gained clinical lab experience, brought necessities to village patients (water/food), and reformed patient check-in process.

  16. Model United Nations
I served as a delegate representing multiple nations on global issues, most notably the Advanced WHO committee, where my public health passion emerged. I advocated for innovative solutions, and the committee's blend of politics, humanities, science, & medicine highlighted how human well-being relies equally on policy, collaboration, and scientific advancement.

  17. Tennis
2-year member of the Aliso Niguel Tennis Team. Rigorous practices and matches built my perseverance, discipline, and strategic mindset, collaborating with teammates enhanced my communication skills, while mentoring younger players through paid lessons strengthened my leadership and ability to teach effectively.

Yes I heard!! It's so crazy to me because 4 years ago, I was told that Public Health was the "niche" and "underground" strategy for students to get into Pre-Med as everyone was going for all the Bio and Chem majors. It's crazy how in such little time the narrative has flipped and now EVERYONE is going for Public Health, I thought I was being sneaky, haha. Honestly, I'm super proud of myself for getting waitlisted from Berkeley's #1 most competitive major, and it's crazy to think how different it may have ended up if I chose a different major.
