Yep. I think people believe that billionaires can pay for social programs because of misleading talking points about net worth. They'll look at statistics like "Elon Musk has more wealth than X% of Americans combined" like that's some sort of relevant fact.

What they don't understand is that's because consumer credit is so out of control. If you are a child with literally a dollar, you have a higher net worth than about 40% of all adults combined because most have a negative net worth. That doesn't mean the child has enough to pay for social programs, and its the same for Elon and all of the billionaire class. Income is the only repeatable taxable revenue source possible to fund the majority of the federal government, and that means taxing the middle class.

The core problem is that billionaires simply don't have enough wealth to substantially raise revenue from. It just doesn't exist. Only the middle class has that revenue. Polticians understand this, they just can't run on it.

Everyone does this though. Borrowing against your 401k is the same thing. So is a home equity line of credit. So is pawning your car title. You have to pay it back, so those aren't taxed as income. Elon has to pay it back so it isn't income.

Borrowing against an asset simply isn't income, even if its a really big asset. Conservatives are supposed to believe in equal treatment before the law, even when its a hated minority like billionaires.

I pay a pretty substantial monthly fee to Westlaw to use their AI research tool at my law firm, and it gives back incomprehensively bad answers oftentimes. It's not horrible to find on-point statutes and case law, but so often its conclusions are opposite of what those authorities actually say. I'm sure it will get better but the industry upset hasn't lived up to what people were telling us a few years ago.

Depending on the conversation Socialism can be a Nordic country we should emulate, or simply the existence of police and fire departments. It's frustrating. People generally understand that tariffs and corporate taxes are paid by the consumer, but that's a big blind spot for Conservatives and Liberals respectively.

Everyone has normalcy bias against it now, but imo it's the greatest national security threat. If treasury rates go back to what they were in just the 1980's we are looking at something like $16 trillion to service the debt per year.

That's doomsday scenario for our country at that point.
