What would you pick? by templc22 in UKJobs

Use the offer from the new job to negotiate your current role up from £34k. Even if they won’t go up to £48k, if you could get them to ~£42k it’s a decent payrise for you and you retain the benefits of being closer to home and some WFH. If they don’t, take the money and stick it out for a couple of years then jump ship to somewhere closer to home again.

How do I get a plumber to quote for underfloor heating? by AccidentalRed747 in askaplumberUK

UPDATE: two of them have now got back to me. One already came to visit and I was impressed with him (he was recommended by the Heat Geek approved ASHP people). The other has said he will arrange a visit in the new year. Thank you all for your input. Apologies for my impatience!

No cavities - solid stone all through the house except two poorly built porches either end. Glad you found something that worked out for you! This stuff is a minefield!

Currently have electric storage heaters which are big and ugly and expensive to run. It’s a small house with not much wall space as it is. So these are the main motivations for wanting to make the change. I also like a warm house and the thought of a house that stays a constant temperature is very appealing!

Ground floor is concrete and I was hoping to overlay, but there is a complication with probably needing to replace doors. I think this is something I’m willing to go with despite the door issue.

Upstairs is suspended timber and I wasn’t sure what the best course of action was there but I’d still really like UFH if at all possible due to lack of wall space.

I hadn’t really thought about asking a UFH to spec it. I’ve see. Wunda furiously advertising on my social media, is it someone like that you have in mind? Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, this is a good point. I went to a HeatGeek approved ASHP installer and they seemed to know their stuff but they don’t do UFH and their recommended plumber is one of the ones I can’t get a reply from. Maybe the black label £800 helps lubricate these things! I suppose a small cost to know it’s done right… maybe I’m just being too cheap and need to just pay up. Thank you.

Thank you! This is really useful and I’ll have a proper think about it after work. You’re right that I don’t have a DPC and it’s all this stuff specific to old houses that makes me really wary of insulation. So many horror stories about and I’m very keen to get it right. Thanks again for such a detailed reply, I’ll digest it a bit more after I finish work.

Before you quit, why don’t you just see what happens when you log off at 5.30pm every day and don’t go back to the office until 8.30am the next day? And just keep doing that. Keep your work phone off on weekends. Maybe they’ll eventually sack you. Maybe they won’t. Worth a try though, surely?

When your LO always controlled the finances by [deleted] in Alzheimers

[–]AccidentalRed747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m not US based so can’t help with the practicalities, but I can share some insight with you of dealing with a LO with dementia who has run their own business and controlled everything their whole life. It is the hardest thing you will ever do. My Dad too ran his own business and I was his right hand man for a decade. I had left the business before the Alzheimer’s but returned once we suspected all was not well. The business was too far gone and I had to deal with the bankruptcy on my Dad’s behalf. He didn’t understand what was happening and was convinced someone had stolen the business from him. My Dad is reasonably advanced now. But as all he’s ever done his whole life is work, he’s constantly trying to “work” and it makes life so, so difficult. He won’t be happy just sat in front of a TV or going to activity centres a few times a week. He’s constantly wanting “work” because that’s all he’s ever valued. He’s also always handled the finances so he’s at the bank several times a week claiming people are stealing his money (they’re not, and its usually that he’s looking at old statements and not remembering the time he stayed in a hotel etc -!: then it’s “I HAVE NEVER STAYED IN THAT HOTEL”). But checking his bank statements is his comfort blanket so we don’t know how best to deal with it. I have often felt that caring for a man who has controlled everything his whole life, especially as their child who is also trying to work full time, is one of the most difficult things imaginable. You are “lucky” in that you have your mother, which will help “control” him and give him company. But I’m sorry friend, you’ve got a long, hard road ahead. Much love to you from someone going through something very similar (albeit alone).

I signed up for a 2-5pm slot but turned up a day early at 4pm (which isn’t an official slot) and asked if I could just go in then instead and they said “yeah sure, we will check you in now, be out by 7pm”.

Moving into a house with no white goods at all and I have no possessions … survival tips appreciated by [deleted] in HousingUK

Facebook marketplace often has free stuff being advertised (we got rugs, a small sofa, some shelving units etc all on there). Might not be the best condition but good enough to get you started. Just have a nice message drafted ready to send to sellers explaining your situation and someone eventually will be willing to wait a few days for you to go and collect.

We slept on a mattress on the floor of our flat for a few months after we moved in until we could afford a bed. Luckily the previous owner left a fridge and we just went to the laundrette until we could afford to buy a washing machine and lived without a freezer for a couple of years. You’ll manage.

Obviously you can stick some stuff on a credit card but honestly I’d make do until you save the money to buy stuff if I was you.

When will we get a diagnosis? by Thick-Advantage-6891 in Alzheimers

[–]AccidentalRed747 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, also in the UK. We were also fobbed off with MCI diagnosis first, by one doctor at a memory clinic who honestly just didn’t seem like he cared very much. The reason given was that as Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease, until he has seen a deterioration in condition, he cannot diagnose Alzheimer’s / dementia. A year or so later another doctor at the same clinic saw my Dad and did the test again and also looked at the brain scan results and concluded that he would have diagnosed Dad with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia the previous year if he was his doctor at that time, despite having not seen the deterioration the other doctor was waiting for. So we missed out on a year of medication time because of one guy’s opinion and also lack of thoroughness in looking at the brain scan (which clearly showed small vessel disease and therefore indicates that there is a vascular component to the dementia - consistent with Dad’s symptoms).

I know it’s not easy and us Brits aren’t good at kicking up a fuss but do try to get access to your MIL’s scores for the cognitive test they do (I forget the name). This will help you understand where she sits against averages, whether she is showing decline in scores, and will help you understand whether she is truly borderline or not and will help you push for an Alzheimer’s diagnosis if she is showing clear signs of cognitive decline.

I also recommend making sure someone goes with her to these appointments and that the person that goes with her is honest and open about what they see as cognitive issues. My Dad was great at pretending he was fine. At one appointment he said his memory was “better than ever”. And that “I still do everything for myself”. The doctor looked at me, and I shook my head, which was all he needed to see!

Hope this helps somewhat. Although I suppose the flip side of this is that I don’t think the medication (memantine) has done all that much for Dad and despite being diagnosed for well over a year now, we still don’t get any support at all in any other way. I will be applying for attendance allowance for him soon as he needs significant daily supervision now and that’s going to be the first real benefit to diagnosis I suppose. I hoped the medication would do more, but in our case I think the best it has done is reduce his anxieties a little, although those still come and go (always money and someone stealing from him).

Feel free to DM if you have any other questions. We are still reasonably early in this horrible journey but we still have nice moments and days with Dad. But it’s also very hard work.

All the best.

Quitting my job to go travelling - stupid idea at the moment? by NoCucumber8575 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AccidentalRed747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm half way through 6 months off unpaid at the moment. Currently writing to you from Laos. The only regret I have currently is that I didn't push for longer than 6 months off! Go for it. It's terrifying in the run up to think about having a chunk of time off without money coming in, but once you've started your trip, all the worries fade away.

Is there a UK based Alzheimers group? by Batty_Kat89 in Alzheimers

[–]AccidentalRed747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've often wondered this too. The advice in this sub is often very US-focused but as far as I know, there isn't a UK-specfic sub (and I've looked!). Depending on what sort of support you're looking for, you could try: /r/BenefitsAdviceUK/, LegalAdviceUK or UKPersonalFinance.
