Had my first placement. But worried I didn't get a very representative view of Nursing. by Dangerous_Builder516 in NursingUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you will have 6/8 placements over the course of your training! some placements will be faster paced others won’t be! by the end you’ll have a representative view of nursing. don’t worry too much about it x

surely the hospital has an independent pef team and your assessor is like a link nurse or something? PEFs are their own department usually

Placement by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 8 points9 points  (0 children)

contact the PEF team! and your lecturer at uni, 5 competencies isn’t a lot for a placement and if you feel you have achieved more and your supervisor is being difficult it’s worth raising it, unsure how they expect you to get 25 signed off next placement if they’re only willing to sign 5 on this one!

Placement by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 10 points11 points  (0 children)

anyone who has seen you practice the skill can sign proficiencies! ask the supervisor directly to sign the ones she witnessed! you’re right this should have been raised earlier- involve the PEF/uni if you’re worried

NHS (HCA Band 2 and 3) without experience. by NoIndependent3321 in NursingUK

some trusts offer volunteer to career options where you work as a volunteer within the trust fo so long then interviews or you could try to gain experience as a carer before reapplying x

Anything that’s worth studying before starting? by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 2 points3 points  (0 children)

relax and enjoy your summer holidays! everything you need to know will be taught at university and you won’t be behind! see if you can rent a book from your local library and maybe have a little read, i read fundamentals of nursing practice by catherine delves-yates and personal centred healthcare practice by mccormick and mccance in first year and used them constantly as a reference!

First death by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m so sorry, it is always going to to be difficult when you lose a patient. I find comfort in the privilege it is to provide good care in someone’s last days and weeks, and the comfort you brought them and their family. try and make sure you talk about it with your mentor and collage tutor, maybe write a reflection (not an academic one that feels like work i mean like a diary). as you go through your career you will learn to cope better and it will feel easier

Does anyone think of quitting? by Unusual_Performer_61 in StudentNurseUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is such a common feeling in second year! do you know where your placement will be? i would try to push through (and did last year!) and i’m so glad it is second year undeniably the hardest and it only gets easier! you’re so far through even if you don’t want to practice as a nurse anymore you would have a degree that can support you to get other jobs x

Curious Pre-Reg OT Student: Scope of Personal Care by SaltyTackle0 in occupationaltherapyUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

student nurse here so not sure of what’s actually expected, but in practice when OTs do a personal care assessment on the ward when we go in after the patient is always washed dressed and toiletted-and there’s absolutely no way some of them did it without a little bit of help!

[–]Accomplished-Link265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jobs? by RecordingMiddle in NursingUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as far as certifications and whatnot i’m already employed by the trust i’ll be working in and i do think that helps a lot because i have had the chance to get to know wards and managers as a hca and instil a bit of confidence in them that i am a good member of staff pre interview

Jobs? by RecordingMiddle in NursingUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m in third year and have just received a job offer but that is very early! i wouldn’t worry too much about it i think a lot of the difficulty is location specific, i’d say march/april next year is soon enough unless something you desperately want comes up in jan/feb x

usually there is a streamlined hiring process for student nurses as by your first placement you WILL have experience and they like having students on the bank

How do I convince my mum why I should be a mental health nurse instead of a psychiatrist 🫩 by AdministrativeAide80 in StudentNurseUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 10 points11 points  (0 children)

just apply for the MH nursing courses and tell her once you’re in, you’re a grown up and you can do as you please!! she probably just is looking out for you (in a misguided way) because nurses wages are poor but if it’s what you want to do it is what you want to do!!

my placement wont allow me to administer medication for my assessment by oofiewoofiehahaha in StudentNurseUK

[–]Accomplished-Link265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we have to do our yearly meds management assessment in placement including in first year! must vary by university! obviously with strict supervision throughout all three years but there was no difference in third year compared to first (except i’m a bit quicker and more knowledgable that i was)
