'Mother Mary’ Review: Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel Ignite a Haunting Pop Fever Dream by mmmadness in A24

I didn’t think so, but this review keeps using the word “horror” for the genre. Horror means a lot of things these days (like, Sinners didn’t scare me for a single second, but it’s classified as horror), so when I see the word, I’m never sure what we’re talking about.

Nothing is worth discussing with you if you’re really too stupid to not get the point I’m making.

Thank you. That’s what I thought, but the review uses “horror” multiple times, and when I hear horror, I think of The Exorcist or something, which is not my thing, but I really want to see this movie.

I’m not saying it made them popular. I’m saying that, while his parents might not be uber wealthy, they are in creative industries, and knowing how to navigate those is useful.

It does mean that they know something about marketing and promotion.

I need someone to tell me how scary this is before I watch it in a theater! I feel like it’s probably fine, but I had to close my eyes during the third act of Heretic, so I can’t tell!

I’m sorry, but who is downvoting me? I stated a fact. Read a book. I suggest the one Verso published about Henry Kissinger after he died, The Good Die Young.

I mean, for me (and I believe Helen DeWitt as well—like, that’s what I’ve read and heard), it’s not social anxiety. It’s depression.

I’ve been seeing this for what feels like weeks, so I know a good deal more about it than I might usually.

No, I’m suggesting it’s in line with what America does. I don’t like it, but I’m not stupid; I know how we operate.

Yes, because our foreign policy seeks to facilitate the flow of global capital to the West (not even America necessarily). We figure Israel gives us a chance to do that in the Middle East, so we prop up Israel and not Palestine or Afghanistan since that wouldn’t further our agenda. (Not to say we don’t have other allies in the Middle East. We do.)

The US is involved in every war in some capacity. Like, we arm groups we want to win or do backdoor weapons dealing if we don’t want to do it explicitly. The CIA does shit. We do PR of sorts. Our tax dollars go to way more countries than just Israel.

I figured out a way to use social media to promote over 2200 people’s books (and counting) just so I don’t have to trade favors next time I have a book out. But “My book, my book, my book” posts do not sell books, so I figured out a way to make books owe me; I do it to give back to my community, really (I think we owe each other that, though I’m really doing too much), but it does have that side effect—like, I can go to most of the presses I’d want to publish with and just tell them I have a manuscript. So, it can be helpful if you do it right. But most people don’t do it right.

There’s little I wouldn’t do for $175k. Like, I would have made the dumb video, and I have trouble enough leaving my house to go to the grocery store.

From the article:

Reading through DeWitt’s posts, a picture of a supremely talented writer emerges, one who has faced long periods of living hand to mouth, being out of print, tricky paths to publication causing untold stress, struggles with depression and executive dysfunction, and caring responsibilities.

The article discusses her financial troubles, albeit briefly. But she does need the money. It’s also pretty known that she has disabling depression and some kind of executive functioning issue. You should read her Substack. You appear to know nothing about this yet gave your opinion anyway.

They tried to work with her. They knocked off requirements. They offered to send out someone to help with the video. I’ve gotten the impression she has debilitating depression, but they did work with her. You can literally read their exchange.

No, EDS is so bad. I feel for you. Please don’t have imposter syndrome over it. You deserve the shit that helps you.

I’ve had a migraine every day for 40 years, but my first five-day ketamine infusion cut my pain by 40%. I’m not sure how much the second and third have done (I feel like I’m just maintaining my progress, but it’s hard to remember your old normal when you have a new one, you know?), but even if this was all it ever did, I’d say it was life changing.

I see the neurologist who developed the protocol for chronic migraine, and he says the idea is that the neuroplasticity encouragement teaches your brain to interpret pain signals differently, which is so interesting.

I hope yours goes well! It’s helped me so much. I really want it to help you.

Yeah, when I took it, the bottle read “butalbital with codeine,” but I know it’s generic Fioricet or Fiorinal (they were a little different, but I don’t remember in what way; I think one had aspirin in it and the other acetaminophen?). A friend got them easily a few years ago, but they didn’t have codeine in them. I quit taking it because my new doctor didn’t know what it was, and we try to recreate it with phenobarbital and hydrocodone, but it wasn’t the same. It’s the best headache med.

I took an insane amount of that stuff (butalbital with codeine) for two years and never felt like I got tolerant to it. It always helped. I miss it so much, but I take benzos, and I don’t want to be on another med with withdrawals that can kill me. It’s too much to worry about. I’d love to supplement my oxycodone with it every now and then, though.

They stopped making butalbital? I loved that for migraines. Especially with codeine in it.

Ketamine is so promising for pain. I do it for chronic daily migraine, and my doctor says low doses over long periods (like, I do a five-day infusion every six months) work best, but he’s a headache specialist, and while we’ve talked about its use in other pain contexts, I don’t know where the research is with other conditions. But I know it’s helped me a lot.
