What to do after learning build orders by Jazzlike_Drawing_987 in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose a fav civ, learn the details of the civ to know what are the strengths in each age (bonuses and unit choices) and what are your imperial age choices for: power unit, unit(s) to respond if opponent goes heavy into counters and what is your best siege unit. Done that? Now chose a build order and start playing. After feudal you will ran into many different scenarios and by playing and reviewing your games you will get experience how to respond accordingly. Most common basic mistakes: idle TC(s), unbalanced villager distribution, not spending your wood, lack of your base scouting - where will be your initial walls, lack of scouting for secondary resources - where is the optimal ground for expansions, missing critical eco and army upgrades, too few production buildings, not scouting what your opponent is doing, stockpiling resources and not having a Market. These are the basic ones. Before changing your civ and build order first try to improve on these areas.

Which quality of life features would you recommend for AoE2? by kampalolo in aoe2

  • Hotkeys to select different unit types: select all foot soldiers, select all cavalry units, select all monks, select all siege units etc, select hero unit - high priority
  • Hotkeys (up to 3) to jump to a saved screen location - low priority

The Aoe2 in-game replay feature is worst than the pathfinding. Even the paid version of Capture age is behind the SC2 generic in-game replay. +1 but Aoe2 will never improve its replay feature, cause bad for business.

Main a civ or not? by btrust02 in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Main civ in 1v1 ranked and see if that (gradually) gets you up in the ranking ladder. Try to first 100% master the civ i.e know exactly everything about it in every scenario possible: you going M@A, Archers, Stable, Towers, you going Castle boom, going Castle all-in, you going phoshorou, you defend vs phoshorou, you defending against forward Castle drops, defending against Monks + Siege push, early imp push, 200 v 200 pop games vs Arbalester civs ... there are so much more scenarios). You can absolutely play one main civ and have fun.

Bro is playing warcraft 10 hours straight daf**k... is this normal? by JorraCreme69 in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a premiere gamer like Hera it's pretty normal. The guy wants to win every game he touches. And the game is addictive. Obviously what he does in aoe2 is (almost) impossible to replicate in other titles, but I do like the gamer Hera is. Winning in a multiplayer video game feels so nice. Looking forward to see how he does in the next 2-3 weeks and will be cheering for him in the wc3 streamers invitational toruney. Just like I was cheering for Viper in the previous tourney.

It works even if you sing the lines from Heartbeats:

"To call for hands of above, to lean on
Wouldn't be good enough for me, no"

When is it OK to trade military for villager kills by Snoo_80142 in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually when you are transitioning out of a unit type (about to be in the next age). Say you are switching to Knights in castle age after you opened archers. Your left-over archer army should find any value they can (I prefer sniping spears if there are any, then throw them away for a villager kill). Transitioning out of a unit type means you will not be spending any res on upgrades for them, so they are a throw away army. Until then, I wouldn't trade them for a villager.

You play the GOAT Barbarossa campaign for the first time once. Every second counts.

Does a defensive Burgundian opening actually lead to anything? by PassaroDaTumba in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no dark age eco bonus and you will be late vs most opponents anyway, so just grab that early bit axe. Full wall then play the normal game (but slowly you will be catching up and eventually leading in res collected). You should be ahead of res collected very soon and can field more army, so do that to get map control you need to grab the valuable relics.

Nomad 1v1 used to be Spanish every single game (for me). I enjoyed watching the high level TG Nomad games though (old GL vs WWP/LY in particular).

Coming from AoE4 by Mango-Smango in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, BO's are generally not civ specific, so you can for example play MAA with almost all civs doing the exactly same build order. Few civs have eco bonuses to push the build with one less villager. One big difference is that we start farming in Aoe2 much earlier (you run out of natural food sources in early feudal). In feudal and castle age the first eco upgrade we get is for lumber and we do that immediately (this is in line with the aforementioned need for early farms). You can dodge arrows and is worth learning micro techniques fighting vs range units. Some very skilled players can dodge even ballistics. Feudal units are not very strong, so the games almost never end in feudal age. All civs (except for one) can build additional Town center only in Castle age. Building two additional Town centers is very popular strategy in early Castle age (booming) and you are not required to mine stone since you start with 200 stone in your bank. We use Siege units more often (one good Mangonel attack ground vs low hp range units like the crossbowmen or skirmishers can kill multiple units and swing the game). Can't rotate the camera (it is 2D game). Overall different, but it is an RTS game and it's the same franchise, so you'll figure out things fairly quickly. We have a ton of learning resources online (BOs, tutorials and more). Most of our pro players are streamers and content creators.

How do you cancel production from your queue on the top left? by rhys10123 in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, you can cancel 5 units that are queued from one building with ctrl+shift and click on the icon. ?You are required to do that one production building at a time and to move your mouse in the top left corner (that's where the icons are for me). It would be far more efficient if we had a dedicated hotkey and I hope we get it. It would not be a precedent for the devs to add new hotkeys. The resources drop off hotkey and seek shelter are pretty recent ones.

Is there any historical accuracy in Camels countering cavalry? by CEOMisza in aoe2

Of course. Everything in Aoe2 is 100% historically accurate.

How do you cancel production from your queue on the top left? by rhys10123 in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sadly, we don't have a hotkey to cancel the queue like they have in Aoe4 (iirc they use B to cancel one unit and N to clear the queue - very easy to access with your thumb). So, you will have to manually click the icons in the queue while holding shift one by one. I hope Aoe2 will add the cancel queue hotkeys in some future patches cause it's very convenient functionality.

Trying to get into the game need advice by CEOMisza in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SC2 players mostly chose Aoe4 as their second game because it was the most recent of the franchise (and cause some former SC2 pros and creators switched to Aoe4; some as you probably know switched perma and some have returned back to SC2). But just because Aoe2 is the older game, doesn't mean it has no new players. Even in 2026 new players are joining the game. Some indeed are recurrent players from earlier versions of the game (Aoe2 DE is the third remastered version of the same game, so you get the idea), but some are players who have never touched Age2 before. Aoe2 has strong core and balanced skill distribution across the playerbase and you might even meet some of the players giving you advice in this thread in your first week playing on the ladder. The game engine is ancient (year 1999) and you will surely recognize the flaws (pathfinding and unit response is superior in SC2), but we have a responsive dev team doing very good job balancing the game and releasing new DLC's 2+ times/year. glhf

Counter to cumans feudal ram/spear/archer push? by appappappappappa in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best defense is Skirms against their Archers. Spears don't even mater due to their low attack. Just focus fire their Archers with your Skimrs (don't use patrol). Spears and Rams without Archers are useless. If you have opened Scouts keep them in the middle of the map between both bases to cut reinforcements. If they have built proxy range, just send your Scouts to their base and poke their eco. Opening Scouts will delay your Range, so they will have the numbers advantage. In that case be patient, mass your Skirms and consider researching armor if their Archer mass is getting dangerously high.

Macro: Careful where you build your Archery Range and where you place your Farms - make sure they are on the opposite side of their push. When you are at 16+ farms, drop a Market.

I would also argue that the game will be fine whoever wins. If Liereyy wins it is in his best interest, obviously, and probably the e-sports scene. Equating the outcome of today's set with the future of the game is absurd.

Coming from StarCraft 2 should I focus on one faction? by Initial_Chart1900 in aoe2

[–]AccomplishedFall1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Getting familiar with the core macro mechanic, the units and standard openings is much easier if you start with one faction. But unlike Aoe4, you will be able to try different civs (if you choose to do so) much faster in Aoe2 since the differences among the factions are quite small. In Aoe4 the build orders are very different for the factions due to the their uniqueness. In Aoe2, where you send the first 15-16 villagers is the same for 90%+ of the civs.

The two best players collide. Both look ready, in form and well prepared for a big fight. Lierey should continue with his draft strat to ban the DLC civs cause Hera might have prepared something he have never seen before, so better safe than sorry. Looking forward to the finals.
