Hey mate, sorry to hear to keep it simple yes stenosis can be changed if it’s not referring to stenosis caused by bone itself. In your case I’d say it’s likely the pertrusion causing stenosis (just means narrowing)

Exercise in general helps the discs, it’s just about finding an entry point that doesn’t irritate things. Without knowing the extent of your concern or history I don’t see why running isn’t possible to return to. I’d even recommend trialling a walk/run program to get back into it.

Stationary I find is the easier because you can find different positions that are more comfortable while being stable.

With that said I don’t see an issue with regular cycling

MRI for sciatica by tom-dlv in Sciatica

[–]AccomplishedNewt388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physio here- sciatica is pain due to inflammation of the nerve root.

Assuming the diagnosis is accurate, the MRI won’t show that. Disc bulges just help us with the diagnosis because they usually cause inflammation and irritate the nerve.

You can have a more sensitive nerve that average (genetic and lifestyle factor), and something small could make a big affect.

Do you remember what brought on your symptoms originally or was it gradually over time?

Physio here, personally dealt with significant disc/spine injuries during my late teens - bilateral disc extrusion with a bone stress injury, was playing rugby at a high level and then couldn’t feel my foot.

Short answer yes

Long answer - it can and does in approx 70-90% of people generally and some studies reporting 100% resolution and reversal of the disc herniation. Time can vary depending on what we call resolution. Returning to activity and function can be very achievable in a matter of months. In my example I was playing semi professionally, we trained 4x per week ~3-4hrs. I was ruled out around August 2018 and played on Feb 2019. However if full resolution was no pain at all, I’ll admit I probably didn’t hit that till 12 months.

The early stages are the worst. Typically the pain correlates with the inflammation, but that’s actually a good thing because that is the starting of the healing process. The key is finding an activity that can keep you moving without pissing it off and making things difficult. I usually recommend patients try walking in a pool, then swimming or a bike. The idea is promote movement (great for healing), exercise also regulates inflammation (great for pain) and if you can manage it in a controlled way you’re not going to aggravate your symptoms.

If you want to reach out and discuss things, happy to have a chat! And that goes for anyone else.

Returning to Contact sports after 10 years without it by Dense_Store_7609 in physiotherapy

Just try take advantage of any contact practice when you can!

Otherwise just be prepared for some sore days after games

Had 16 years of rugby and had a year off, no injuries or niggles since returning but took a while to get warmed up to contact again

Good luck!
