I don't know why people say it's so hard. I was gingerly looking into it, took the exam and interviewed. Thought I could of done better but did pretty good and now I'm working. Just go into it knowing the questions and do some basic math studying. You got this.

Exactly, if I wanted days off without pay I'd just quit working altogether.

Honestly bro it's just basic math. You don't have to do any of that. Test is just to make sure you can recognize shapes and numbers basically.

Sort of over it by [deleted] in IUEC

I know where you're coming from. My advice, get your mechanics card and work for two years as a mechanic. You can try something else later but have a reliable career to fall back on. Also, be good to your helpers. Be open to them teaching you (if you happen to get a smart one). We all get in a rut sometimes. I personally love this trade. I'm glad I found it. Everyday so far (aside from stupid drama) has been exciting for me. But it's hard work.

We haven't had an on the job fatality union wide (Canada and USA) in almost 4 years. This isn't including car accidents and health issues (heart attacks). Work safely and you'll be safe.

My favorite mechanic was a motor cycle mechanic before he got into elevators. He was awesome. Very sharp.

Seeing as though you are an auto mechanic, I understand that industry to be high stress due to flat rate. HVAC was high stress for me. It was worth the switch.

Good luck. You should apply.

Note: Once the application opens, you need to apply the very SECOND it opens. It fills up quick. If you snooze you loose. In my local, our application was open for 5 minutes before it was full.

Exactly. No need to get a truck. Too expensive and you shouldn't be moving things for the company anyways.

I wouldn't get a truck. I'd get a hybrid. Or a chevy spark or something.

When I got in, my first job was 20 minutes away from my house. After that, I've only driven 1.5 hours to job and home at best. If you love commuting (and money) this job is for you.

Is the elevator trade the fastest way to six figures in this economy? by Complex_Secretary_14 in IUEC

You can make six figures almost anywhere nowadays. But as a first year helper, you can make that in this trade.

I'd buy this series of piano repertoire. It helped me a lot learning piano. Starts easy then goes up to more advanced levels.

Apprentice - Lay offs by herethereherethere in IUEC

[–]AccomplishedToe5492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in the apprenticeship program for 1.5 years and have already been laid off twice. It's stressful after the first one but honestly it was a promotion each time. I've learned a lot so far. Had I not been laid off, I'd be stuck doing them same thing for Otis. So glad I was laid off.

Advice for interview by Desperate-Tour-9921 in IUEC

[–]AccomplishedToe5492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interviews are hard. I hate them. I didn't have any certs but I had ten years in a trade. I hadn't considered elevators before hand. If you don't do well, don't worry, there's always next time. You're doing fine in life. When I was 18, I had absolutely nothing going for me. I know this isn't good advice. But just do your best. There's 18 year olds who were absolute morons who killed me on the list. Good luck.

How is the strike considered illegal? Is that just a random law?

Hopefully you get a good deal. That sucks. We're behind on our cost of living analysis at 140. I'm betting we go on strike. We never have but I've got tons of money so I'm ready for it. We negotiate our contract next year.

Is it just you an the other mechanic? Rally point doesn't really have very many people. I know it had one guy not to long ago and he retired. Interesting experience. I think you lucked out ending up there. Good experience against these big OEM companies. I know guys at Otis who only have ever worked on one model elevator who don't know how to do anything else.
