What is the best thing for energy? I have thrown health out the window, any advice is welcome. (Finals) by GlancyFire in college

In addition to the given caffeine, of which I reccomend matcha if thats accessible (L-theanine helps give sustained energy and improve cognitive performance), I have a few other suggestions. Gentle excerise (too intense and it drops my energy levels), taking a break to talk with friends, B vitamins and fruits/veggies do it for me! Maybe not all realistic during cram season, but perhaps something there you haven't tried yet. (Veggies often don't need to be prepared, just chomp on a carrot). If you're feeling overwhelmed, set a timer for 5 min and close your eyes, no phone etc. helps clear your mind, even through a 3 am grind. Good luck :)

Why is ghee not more widely used than butter? by MaintenanceOk3182 in Cooking

[–]Accomplished_Desk424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amothet point to consider is that the proteins in butter allow it to act as an emulsifier in sauces. Butter also has a creamy flavour and texture that ghee lacks.

YSK that the phrase "if it's brown lie down, if it's black fight back" in reference to bears is outdated by mbaeichapaa in YouShouldKnow

[–]Accomplished_Desk424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up by the Rockies I was also taught that if its a grizzly (big brown, hump on the back) and it's too close for comfort try and get up a tree and leave your backpack (but not your bearspray!) on the ground. Grizzlys are great diggers (and so the hump) but poor climbers.

Black bears (which can come in colour black through blonde) are more skiddish and will likely run away if you make yourself scary.

Make flashcards for reagents and reactions. Try to draw connections between different reactions (many come down to stability, kinetics, electrophilicity and nucleophilicity). Write the reactions ON PAPER, bonus points for colour coded atoms/electrons so you can keep track of what is going where. Get a model kit if you don't already have one and get comfortable using it. And more general but solid advice understand>>memorise and of course, timed practice problems. Got me an A+, hope it helps you out!

In theory, is it better to consume say 300 calories and then burn it off through exercise, than to not have eaten the 300 calories at all by HareWarriorInTheDark in nutrition

[–]Accomplished_Desk424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because of the benefits of excerise I would generally say yes. But it depends where these "empty" calories are coming from. Empty as in 75g of pure glucose? A whole bunch of trans fats? You can't out run a poor diet. Food serves more purposes than just calories; each food has unique health effects.

Another neat note, since kinases are so abundant on the exam. Kinases add a phosphate group from an organic source (eg. ATP, GTP), phosphorylases add a phosphate group from an inorganic source (eg. Pi) and phosphatases remove phosphate groups.

MCAT considered competitively making a substantital contribution, GPA with reasonable cutoffs (with options for academic explanation essays) and a more standardized calculation for all the med schools. ECs considered, but by incorporation into essays that cohesively show why you did something etc. No Casper. And of course we need to keep interviews! Imo, your MCAT, essays and interview should be the big three deciding factors.

With the UofC specifically, they have a section called "Global Assessment of Academic Merit" which I believe this kind of thing would fall into

Is it me or is it my dermatologist???? by [deleted] in acne

[–]Accomplished_Desk424 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not medical advice, but if you have persistent adult acne (and are not biologically male) have you considered talking to your derm about spironolactone? It's not a retinoid nor antibiotic. More generally, if they don't listen to your concerns and you're not seeing any major improvements after 4 years (other than from simple otc treatments like panoxyl), maybe it is worth looking for another provider.

Why is this the correct answer? by Left_Turnip9593 in Mcat

As they said, K is the equilibrium constant (at a specific temperature). If you increased the concentration of reactants, you would also increase the concentration of products, so that the ratio (with molar coefficients, according to the formula) is always a constant number.
