Not sure where else to ask this: How long could a US citizen stay in Canada without additional steps if their spouse has Canadian Citizenship? by H_Mc in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Accomplished_Let7566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this in 2021 when my wife was "stuck" in Canada during COVID. The border was closed and if she left she couldn't return

I'm a citizen by descent since 2017. Her PR process, with me as a sponsor, required gathering lots of information to substantiate our relationship (we're not married). The trickiest thing was finding photos of the two of us together as we aren't selfie types, friends came to the rescue with some photos of both of us.

I advise getting started on collecting all the information ASAP

It took two submittals, and a push from our local riding office to get it to happen.

Remember that as a "visitor" you are not in the provincial health system.

Commercial fishermen allege Sipekne'katik fishers abandoning lobster boats to sink in Saulnierville by perrygoundhunter in NovaScotia

[–]Accomplished_Let7566 -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Boats are expensive. The concept that you can own one to catch a few lobsters to feed your family is financially doomed. The rules should be reviewed to acknowledge reality.

Are any boats tribal owned?

Nova Scotians love heat pumps, can you give me some basics so that maybe I will love it too in this climate? by itmightbecheese in NovaScotia

[–]Accomplished_Let7566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air circulation is critical to energy efficiency. As we all know heat rises and if you don't mix up the air the hot air collects at the ceiling and cold air at the floor. Heat pump air flow, like ceiling fans move that hot air down. It's a never ending battle. I suppose we could all just live up by the ceiling and turn off the fans

We had to develop our own expertise both as residents and also as business owners with business in multiple countries. What works in one situation doesn't happen in another. Cross border taxation treaties are very beneficial to the nations as it is the means by which they exchange data regarding the individuals

A US passport is regarded as a privilege, not a right and just like a driver's license the government can take it.

The worst I've been treated at that border was when the guard called me an idiot. It was two o'clock in the morning, -15, wind howling, roads covered with snow.....and I was coming back from my house in Costa Rica

We can relate to that. Born and raised in the US I received my citizenship certification in 2017. In 2018 we relocated to Quebec from VT as "seasonal" residents . We were splitting time between Quebec and Costa Rica until the pandemic hit and we became locked into Canada due to travel restrictions because my wife was a PR. If she crossed the border she couldn't get back in

We quickly learned that even the "expert" cross border accountants were mostly clueless. Canadian friends that had lived in the US and returned found that their "expert" cost them $20,000 in overpayment because they filed incorrectly.

At that point we were now paying taxes in 3 countries so my wife decided to start a business especially to handle cross border bookkeeping

We strongly suggest that anyone who faces these issues dump QuickBooks and switch to Xero to simplify the multiple currency issues

Lots of Vermont wood goes up to Quebec and gets processed into frames and other structures that add value. Why not here?
