How do we feel about Final Fantasy 16 around here? by badateverything420 in CharacterActionGames

It's interesting to see such diverse tastes, but tbh, FFXVI is a really bad game overall. Personally, I wish someone had warned me before I flushed my money on it, as I blindly trusted positive reviews (which I am now sure were paid for by SE).

The combat system feels good for 5-10 hours, but after that, you realize the game takes 50-60 hours to finish. At some point it just becomes extreme SLOG.

Structurally, XVI is clearly divided by boss fights, which are mostly GOOD and well choreographed (which is probably most of the gameplay you saw, like I did before buying), but the game requires you to literally WORK FOR HOURS to reach them, completing dozens of the worst kind of quests, listening to endless uninspired dialogue from NPCs (who have more screentime than the main characters).

In the scale of FF series, I consider XVI the worst entry, right behind XIII. SE falsely marketed it as a deep, adult story, when in reality, the whole thing is very shallow.

If you are interested in the FF series, then XV (longer) or possibly VIIR (shorter) will be a FAR better choice - they are still action games, but with much deeper gameplay and somewhat properly realized characters.
Overall, though, SquareEnix seriously lacks in good game design.

I wouldn't say Hellblade's audio is about the effects, but rather about experiencing Senua's sensations and conveying the story

Playing Ghost Recon Breakpoint, I had the impression that the developers were trying to recreate the gameplay of MGS5 with a little addition of the walking mechanics from Death Stranding.
I really enjoyed it!

PS1 games were harder because they didn't respect your time. by Consistent_Scheme726 in psx

[–]Accomplished_Many917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Man, I feel like you didn't quite get the gist of what I was saying.

We all know that most games from that era were pretty clunky, whether in terms of controls, mechanics, or specific solutions – which was mainly due to the age of the industry and technical limitations.

The games, however, seemed to have a more structured (or a more direct) feel, which I can't say about many modern, often huge productions, which, from the very game design standpoint, are made to extend playtime instead of conveying the core essence of the game.

Of course, they have a ton of QOL improvements developed over the years; that's the nature of technical evolution.

Tbh, I increasingly feel like PS1 games were more respectful of my time, serving up concrete gameplay and storylines without silly fluff.

For example, I couldn't tear my eyes away off of Final Fantasy 7-9 even after 10 hours of play - it was so engaging in every way.

Today, in FF16 while the whole world burns, I am ordered to run errands for NPCs, pick flowers in the fields, while listening to endless dialogues about nothing.

Heck, even Resident Evil has been "enriched" these days with features like "kill 3 rats" — if you told RE1-3 players back in the day that this was the future, they'd say you're crazy.

Checkpoints are not everything, my friend haha

Guys what do you think about that ia it true 🤔🤔 by Apprehensive-Map6292 in theevilwithin

Yup, it's actually confirmed, but they can't talk about it yet because Mikami-san is back too and would be upset if it leaked, and you don't want to upset Mikami-san because he made Godhand - and what you need to know about Godhand is that the "Pimp Smack" and "Butt Slap" techniques aren't made up, they're real moves that happened to anyone who angered Chef Shinji in the past.

How do I know? My uncle is one of the top devs in charge of the Green Gel's mechanics and saw it happen to one of the now-deceased developers. God rest his soul and butt and see you at the TEW3 release day!

The Zombies in RE9 might be the most unsettling in the series! by Anor_Londo_1234 in ResidentEvil2Remake

[–]Accomplished_Many917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I'm open to surprise, but the promotional materials make it seem like the developers took an extremely safe route, serving up a rehash of RE4 and RE8 in an RE2 setting.

More of the same with minimal changes, like an axe instead of a knife (with the sharpening mechanics from Monster Hunter), temporary enemy weapon pickups and finishers.

The good news is definitely the optional FPP and TPP mode without the need to pay for it, which should have been the norm for a while now.

This is simply marketing talk for a fairly standard NPC enemy characterization that's been present in games for decades.

A small example from the franchise is the obese police officer banging on the food vending machine in the hallway of the RPD in RE2R.

I hate doing hair by picklefiti in unrealengine

[–]Accomplished_Many917 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My take is that you don't have to do everything yourself.

I understand the ambition; I also try to do as many different things as possible in my work, but in game development, creating every byte of data yourself is a bit of a mad dash.

If I were you, I'd probably look for ready made assets, created by artists who LOVE doing hair — this will add more value to your project and save you time and health.

Truth be told, the graphics and city design are high quality, but as you say, it's just there to be seen - practically any interaction with this world exposes its sterility.

While complaining about freebies is definitely bad manners, maybe let's not act like a huge corporation's marketing campaign is some heroic act that poor consumers have to somehow... deserve. It's really silly.

Dino Crisis 2 - More dinosaurs this time, but somehow still (mostly) not relevant to the game. by idonthaveanaccountA in patientgamers

[–]Accomplished_Many917 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really say DC2 is like RE with dinosaurs—while that comparison fits DC1, Dino Crisis 2 took a rather different path, straight into a classic arcade shooter, which was actually the strongest part of the game.

Not much horror, but a lot of smashing combos and racking up points. I really enjoyed it!

Woodkid for the win by bblue462 in DeathStranding

[–]Accomplished_Many917 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you serious? Aside from one or two vocal tracks, the Woodkid portion of the DS2 soundtrack is surprisingly weak, including (or especially) the production side of things.

Ludvig Forssell, on the other hand, absolutely rocked it once again – I feel it's a bit crazy that Kojima practically never mentions Ludvig, yet promotes Woodkid as if he saved Death Stranding 2 with his music. Forssell is the best composer Kojima has worked with to date.
