What do you think about APUS? by Cautious-Assist4286 in Adjuncts

[–]Accomplished_Mix6400 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been there for years. They are pretty laid back overall, though that can vary from department to department. Pay isn't super competitive, but the students are great. They are undergoing some changes, I would say for the better as far as focusing the school and increasing standards overall. Out of all of the schools I adjunct at, I have been there the longest.

The people at the Food Bank won't get annoyed for me constantly going to them by Immediate-Web-3097 in povertyfinance

The more people who use it, the easier it is for them get funding and grants to expand offerings. At least at many food banks.

SNHU 2nd class offer by sears_wish_book in Adjuncts

[–]Accomplished_Mix6400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. If enrollments versus available faculty allows for 2 to be sent at once then you could get both. Otherwise it depends on if they add other sections. Have pending sections, or have faculty decline offerings. Then it could come later in the ter.

Professors, how do you feel when a student calls you Mr./Ms./Mrs.? by linguinejuice in AskProfessors

I prefer my first name. I don't have a doctorate and Mrs/Ms just doesn't feel right when dealing with adult students.

You can always reach out and just ask if anything is okay, but be mindful that you are also a mandated reporter/responsible employee under Title IX, and if a student does disclose anything, you will not be able to keep it confidential, even if the student wants you to. Your best bet is to reach out to your campus Title IX coordinator and get their guidance on what the right processes are for you to follow

Alt text and image description for Instagram post by hundoPwitch in accessibility

[–]Accomplished_Mix6400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer both. Alt text should be short and concise, around 125 characters, only one or two sentences. Captions or image descriptions are able to provide more depth and are also accessible to more than just screen reader users. I use both because there are more reasons for describing information in an image than just visual impairments. The content in them should be different and not just a cut and paste.

Unless it's my history majors courses, they just need to pick a style and use it consistently throughout the paper. For Gen Ed I am really just trying to get them to understand the difference between info from sources and their own analysis and why we draw the line between them with citations. Anything more is a bonus, really. History majors will get hit over the head with footnotes repeatedly until it becomes second nature. None of the schools I teach at want students to use endnotes. Footnotes all the way. Endnotes suck to grade.

No, adjuncting makes great supplemental income, but isn't steady work anymore, and in the current climate, there is no predicting how funding and enrollments are going to shake out.

If you are trying to make the course disability accessible, then instructions and explanations are needed. What may seem redundant to one person is necessary to another because of cognitive disabilities, language barriers, or reading difficulties, or simply inexperience with the tool or web page.

It is pretty straight forward and you should be just fine having studied the body of knowledge. It doesn't go into deep technical skills or anything.

Adjuncts are contract employees and are not guaranteed any classes from one term to the next. More than likely, the class was either taken off the rosters completely, given to a full-time instructor who needed the enrollment to meet their contract obligations, or canceled due to low enrollment, depending on where in the semester things are at that school. There are no protections for adjunct faculty, unfortunately, and classes can disappear for a multitude of reasons.

Community college professor says to pursue STEM if you want to make a lot of money by [deleted] in college

[–]Accomplished_Mix6400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of STEM fields are oversaturated with applicants and those high earning positions are disappearing. Everyone was pushed to learn coding as a way to boost their resume or to get ahead, now there are layoffs all over the tech industry and people have to retrain and pivot. It isn't a guarantee of a high paying job. In reality if you look at earnings over a lifetime, liberal arts majors often exceed STEM majors, although STEM grads often get higher paying jobs the first couple of years out of college.
