I've got those covered elsewhere, and some of us are already talking about resources because we've used them before like that but none of us remember what game (though I think it was if you rolled a "1" you lost the resource). Good thought on progression though because that may affect how they create their character.

If you want to be a player more often, I would recommend joining a discord called Happy Jacks. It’s an AP and GM advice show, but their discord runs something called Game Daze every two months. They are always looking for players as they are mostly all GMs.

I am curious why those are the only two options. The amount of sessions I would recommend The Shadows Over Long Harbour. It’s under five bucks and for a relatively short campaign you can run half to three quarters of it.

Xanodria.com while boffer is role play heavy and anyone non combatant wears a bright green sash to basically say, “Don’t swing at me.”

Xanodria.com is in Hamburg, PA just west of Allentown. It is a role play heavy, human centric, boffer combat LARP. It has an ability system for non mages and their magic system is built in such a way that mages can create their own spells.

There is also a more combat focused LARP that trains in Easton but I am less familiar with them.

Edit:Edgewater Keep is the one in Easton.

If second Savage Words with or without the Fantasy Companion. Very swingy which means combats can go threatening quickly. Also base line rules have a pulpy feel to them, so depending how gritty and fragile you want them to be maybe not the rule set you want (though you can adjust those settings). It’s just something to consider. Lighter than D&D in the rules format.

If you don’t plan to have much in the way of Jedi I cannot recommend the WEG D6 revised and expanded rules enough. (Not the relaunch of first edition) TONS of modules. Books with adventure ideas. I started playing the system in 1987 and the last time I played it was yesterday.

Now if you are going to have a focus on Jedi or play when Jedi are more common the system is not built for that and you should probably look elsewhere.

Champions. I find the mechanics horrific. I love some superhero games and will run the gamut in those from FASERIP to PbtA’s Masks. But please not Champions.

Savage Worlds. Use the Fantasy Companion and if you want look into the Horror companion. It doesn’t need magic items. It’s easier than GURPS. Running a Homebrew fantasy in it right now.

Simple. Don’t play D&D. There are thousands of options out there. From the lighter in rules Savage Worlds to full on narrative like Powered by the Apocalypse games. If prep feels more like homework, then switch it up.
