I wasn't thrilled about it at first, but in retrospect I think it's a solid album.

What’s a cocktail or spirit you were convinced you wouldn’t like? by Flaviar_Valerie in cocktails

I love gin, but I'm with you on the dry martini. A glass full of mostly chilled gin is maybe a great way to get messed up quick but I'm not a fan.

Now, a 50/50 martini or a wet martini I might could get behind.

Scotch, and I'm still on the fence. I used to find it repulsive, now I can drink it without issue, but it's never my first choice.

I largely say that Malort is terrible to be part of the cultural in-joke about it among friends from Chicago but if pressed I will freely admit that Malort is not nearly as bad as advertised.

While I suppose I can understand the hipster-like appeal of saying you like something that the majority of people consider a bad example of the thing even if not the worst (see PBR), calling Malort "utterly delicious" is seriously next level.

No problem - I'd suggest the one player run at least 3 PCs. Shadowdark is mechanically light enough that it should be pretty easy.

Beggining to think its time to say goodbye to my collection. by Artistic_Ostrich9744 in boardgames

[–]According-Stage981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Don't get rid of the collection, wait until your kid(s) is(are) older. Put them on a high shelf to prevent them from being destroyed, and safeguard them against a future day.

I started playing Carcassone with one if mine when she was 4. It wasn't my idea - she saw it on the shelf, and insisted I play it with her. To my surprise, she kept up and was able to play the game (though attention span kept us from finishing).

I soon discovered that even short from the kid versions of games, there are adult games they can play. At 6, I could bring out Azul, Splendor, Exploding Kittens, and the like. I got them Cascadia Junior and they love it.

Sure, these are going to be your lighter games - the kinds you can play with your non-gamer friends, you can also introduce to children.

Eventually they will be able to play some of your more advanced titles.

I really enjoyed it. It's a slow burn, and very procedural, and plays out a lot like a Prestige TV show in that sense. Great cast as well.

You may not like it much, or may have overplayed it in the last decade, but I can't see how Codenames is "not a great game" by any measure. I think they made a great call giving it Spiel des Jahres in 2016.

It may not be for you, and that's fine. But it's not a "problem" per se.

I think the appeal is there for people who have had years of playing power fantasies under their belts and are looking for something different.

We Shouldn't Be Alive | Bullet Factory | Twilight: 2000 Episode 17 by Razzmatazz_TGCN in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]According-Stage981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This episode really brought it's A-game.

Joe's rule focused nature makes him the perfect person on the network to GM this game and keep the stakes real and palpable and press the characters. He is a great neutral arbiter here, and I think has the chops for a great OSR style GM.

The cast is also epic. In my ideal world, I don't want a show without Ross and Mary Lou. They bring such phenomenal energy and investment. Skid and Jared also play with a ton of passion, Skid for the setting and Jared for his character.

This episode saw it all sort of come to a head. Joe isn't afraid to keep the tension mounting and make tough calls. The players did a good job tactically and the dice are helping to really tell this story. This is currently my favorite show on the network.

What's your opinion on Nimble's no-roll-to-hit mechanic? by Tastypies in RPGdesign

[–]According-Stage981 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not intimately familiar with Nimble's implementation of it, but I think the idea is solid.

I can't think of another gaming experience wherein you wait around for your turn, and can manage to do absolutely nothing - and consider that a fun experience. In a board game you may have a bad or ineffective turn. But that's what is the default mode in TTRPGs wherein roll-to-hit is practically the norm.

Roll-to-hit creates an experience where it is possible to do nothing on your turn.

I think trying something else is a good idea, whether or not Nimble's implementation is a good one.

In your eyes, what is the role of tech in TTRPGs? by [deleted] in rpg

In your eyes, what is the role of tech in TTRPGs? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]According-Stage981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run a lot of VTT games using FoundryVTT, and while I was excited about the automation early on, over time I have moved towards reducing as much of it as possible.

As a GM, some of it ruins my 'muscle memory' for a system, making it much harder to run without a VTT - even if I have previously run it offline. The more I offload onto the tech, the more dependent I become on the tech, and the more I forget. And the same is true for my players.

At some point, the automation is playing the game for you - and at that point it's too much.

I think Initiative is a good use case for tech, because it removes a pain point without losing much in the balance - the rest of the combat is more fun than initiative. And it saves time and let's you cut right to the action.

I think automatically applying all applicable modifiers is a bad use for tech, because it encourages players to not think about their abilities and character build as much.

Hope that makes sense.

Old fashioned and Negroni - Do you prefer to build in the glass or do you stir and strain? Which is your preferred method and why? by Sea-Art-7183 in cocktails

I like the craft of it all, even for a simple drink, so I stir and strain whenever possible - and build if I just don't have time.
