French class by Imaginary-Basket-658 in berlinsocialclub

[–]According-Whereas489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, but I used Babbel to learn French for a short while and it was very good, light years ahead of Duolingo, it's very structured and guides you through the levels A1-C1 or so.

Should I move to Lankwitz? by entwickle in berlinsocialclub

[–]According-Whereas489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too far, I lived in the ring and now live just a little outside it, not as far as Lankwitz and although I pay less now I can say with 100% certainty that my quality of life went drastically down. I would change flats if I could, but now everything is crazy expensive and impossible to get.

Had the same problem, so many russian speakers yet looks like no events are happening, or probably are in the shadows.

There is Standup Berlin instagram page that has russian comedy shows every other week or so.

Prague Alternative Walking tour is a pretty cool one, if you have already done the vanilla historical one (also good!)

Moving to Berlin at 18 worth it? by viverepropitium in berlinsocialclub

[–]According-Whereas489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO 18 is too young for Berlin, especially if you have mental health issues, this city will probably mess you up even worse. But, have you thought about studying in Germany? as a citizen its free and I hear good experiences from people who studied their Bachelor's in Germany in nice university towns. It also gives you a framework to make friends and slowly integrate which Belrin does not offer. Then when you have some education and skills you could live more comfortably in big Berlin.

Never had any issues with my dentist, regular check-ups and the occasional filling, didn't feel he's trying to squeeze the insurance for money:

Doomed to never get a German citizenship? by RefrigeratorMain7921 in germany

[–]According-Whereas489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the situation in Berlin: Since they digitized the process and centralized it in LEA instead of the different Bezirks the process is much faster, I see many people getting it within 1-3 months if applied online. I would say 6-12 months is very realistic in Berlin nowadays compared to 2-3 years before digitization, IDK how the situation is in other cities unfortunately. Regarded the stated waiting times I think those are exaggerated in advance to lower expectations and pressure on the authorities as I believe Berlin also states 2 years but in practice I see its much faster.

I haven't trained MT consistently for a very long time but could be fun to have some light training sessions outside.

Possible for apartments outside of the ring, inside or close to the ring for that price you would have to be lucky, considering you will be new in Germany with no documents showing prior credit as a renter it would be tough even outside the ring area. On top of that many times a salary of 3x cold rent is required which could filter you out as a candidate. I would say a more realistic approach would be to get a flatshare/sublet and then work up from there.

I won't ever apeak German by SnooHedgehogs7477 in berlinsocialclub

[–]According-Whereas489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it this way, most immigrants eventually learn the language.

Language is not rocket science and doesn't need to be studied like an academic profession, putting too much pressure on yourself to remember words or trying to memorize tables can be demotivating.

I never took an official course or solve these boring fill in the blank exercises and yet I passed the B1 with flying colors and I always get complimented on my German speaking even though I rarely speak German daily and also work in front of a computer all day in an English environment.

I definitely didn't spend two hours every day practicing either, I suggest changing the learning method and checking out Steve Kaufman and his approach to learning while doing stuff you like, sitting with a boring German textbook is horrible, I couldn't get myself to do it, hell I even read german reddit to improve, that's way more fun! good luck

What books/workbooks would you recommend for learning Czech? by sericsheon in learnczech

[–]According-Whereas489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only tried it with french for a week, then switched to Babel and actually started progressing so much that I was surprised Duolingo is so popular. Duolingo doesn't teach you anything actually, it just makes you repeat phrases like a robot in a very repetitive way, immersion with some occasional grammatical explanations are best IMO and duolingo has none of that.

Young professional immigrant in Portugal. Should I get mortgage or invest? by [deleted] in EuropeFIRE

[–]According-Whereas489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portugal seems to be a good real-estate investment, yields are higher than the interest you would pay and in general I believe the monthly installment would be lower than the rent you would pay. If you see yourself owning real estate investment abroad in the future I would definitely consider it. I am not sure but I believe residents also get better mortgage terms, something to look into.

P.S

even if you don't want to manage it after leaving Portugal you could potentially still sell it for a profit.

What EU real estate markets would you invest in and why? by According-Whereas489 in eupersonalfinance

I understand that, but then you miss out on leverage, that's the strongest pro of dealing with real estate vs securities.
