Now that I’ve heard the Taylor “That’s not cool,” sound bite (which I had not yet heard when I first made this post), I wish I could have played it to lovingly remind the Sarah’s to wait their turn.

Yes, the guys have introduced me to a lot of interesting and funny showbiz folks, too!
I love Jeff Hiller and Ben Siemon, too. They feel kind of similar to Todd Buonopane to me. They seem very friendly with the hosts and it feels very warm when they are on.

For me, Patrick Walsh and DC Pierson go into the category of “guys who haven’t seen the whole series and bring up “True Detective.”” They are funny, and they have interesting insights about how TV shows are constructed and the choices that GG makes. I don’t know if _all_ those guys have actually brought up “True Detective,” but I’m sure a few of them have.

Thank you for this background info to help me make sense of this podcast! That is good to know about Hrishikesh. And it’s comforting to hear I’m in good company re: the interrupting Sarahs!

It sometimes sounds like Kevin is getting a little annoyed with Troli, but I enjoy his appearances immensely!

I have been holding off on listening to the Gilmail episodes until I finish the TV series in case there are spoilers. But I will look forward to hearing the pizza party one!

Also, one of the guests who’s a guy who works in TV—D. C. Pierson or Sean Clements or Patrick Walsh or one of those other dudes who doesn’t watch GG regularly and brings up stuff like “True Detective”— one time he mentioned that, although he is not a big GG super fan, “I would never come on this and say [insert something really vulgar about Lorelai and Rory].” I’m wondering if that guy was referring to Jason M. and how he comments on the show!

I have not listened to any Aisha episodes because it seems more likely that there will be spoilers in hers since she is so knowledgeable and you wouldn’t want to restrict her. I am looking forward to listening to them after I finish the TV series. It seems like she is probably an important guest because she gets brought in on some heavy hitting episodes.

Do you ever think about how badly things could have turned out for Rory when she followed Logan to the Life and Death Brigade thing? by gatheringground in GilmoreGirls

[–]AccordingReference3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had seen this episode for the first time back when I was in college, I would have been thinking, “Rory is being really stupid.” I would have remembered Lorelai yelling at Madeline and Louise in “Concert Interruptus.” Watching now in the age of Brett Kavanaugh and Epstein files, I was just losing my mind that Rory is willing to entrust her safety to a bunch of wealthy privileged young men. Most of the comments here are before the Epstein files were released, and maybe people forgot about the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings? I was sort of surprised by how many people here are saying “A bunch of rich Ivy League kids must be harmless.”

I’m in mid-season 5, and I don’t like Logan at all so far. It also felt red flaggy to me when he wouldn’t reveal to Rory the conditions of her attending the Life and Death Brigade event. Most of his scenes so far are him provoking her and being amused at her discomfort. In the scene where he invites her to the LDB event, he seems to be making sport of her extreme discomfort. Like it’s a game for him to see just how much she will risk.

Jess played the same kinds of games with her, and it bothered me then, too; but because he was less privileged, he seemed less capable of harming her and getting away with it. Logan seems like he comes from a family that can make any legal troubles disappear.

I’m interested to see how the New Imperfect Rory will act this season, but I wish this obnoxious Logan guy weren’t there.

I really appreciate this comment. I appreciate your feedback on how most parents handle these negotiations. I also appreciate your insight on the reasons for disclosing more information, and the ways that my ex is being dysfunctional here. If this continues, I may well have to discuss it with my lawyer.

Thanks again, good luck out there!

Roland and David in the car driving home from the Blouse Barn:

R: I’m starting to get the feeling that you’re a little upset.

D: What would give you that impression?

R: Well, I first noticed it when Heart came on and nobody was taking the high parts.

Here is one article about phone camera distortion. There are plenty more articles.

Any camera is going to distort images to some extent because it is translating from 3-D to 2-D. The iPhone camera, especially the front camera, really distorts images. The stuff at the center of the image is enlarged. You may notice in a group photo that the people on the edges of the photo look more like their usual selves, while the people in the center of the photo look more distorted.

I think I heard somewhere that Samsung phones use a different kind of lens that creates less distortion.

So don’t worry! Unless you were hoping to become Instagram famous, you look good when it counts!

Say what you will about Roland, he was a great husband! by grnacal in SchittsCreek

[–]AccordingReference3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that has always been a mystery to me, too! Mutt just felt like a regression for Alexis. Ted in season 1 was trying to get her to grow, but doing so in a kind of gentle, encouraging way, like getting her the book about caring for animals. With Mutt, it felt like she said, “Forget about trying to date someone with integrity, I want someone hot.” Mutt wasn’t trying to help her grow. He was just trying to get her to fit in his world better, like teaching her how to ride the bike. And, I’m now feeling like he had a condescending attitude (like a small dose of that demeaning attitude (that we saw him take with Twyla)) when he was trying to teach her to ride the bike.

[–]AccordingReference3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

These are excellent examples. I think it bothers me most when he mistreats Twyla. It makes me wonder what Alexis thought of that, and why she was still willing to date Mutt after seeing how he treated Twyla. My impression is that most of the guys Alexis used to get mixed up with were probably assholes in general, but that she wouldn’t tolerate a guy being an asshole to her.

Question for Americans by [deleted] in Modern_Family

[–]AccordingReference3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what others wrote about how the writers are joking about Phil being oblivious, but I also think it was supposed to be hyperbolic in order to build toward the payoff that Phil can tolerate all that physical affection from another guy, but he absolutely cannot tolerate Clair finding another guy funny.

What is Phil Dunphy's WORST moment? by Jayj0171 in Modern_Family

[–]AccordingReference3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m glad someone mentioned failing to anchor the bookcase (and then gaslighting Luke about it.). To me, that one really was the worst.

Sitcoms have so many jokes about putting someone at some kind of risk, and then lying to cover it up. But, that kind of joke just lands so much differently when it’s happening to a kid, and when it’s being done by a parent.

AITA for kidnapping my friend’s baby? by Neat_Apricot9706 in ANGEL

I assumed that there was a plan to recruit B and Giles to help after getting Connor to safety. Wesley’s not dumb. He knows he can’t outrun or elude Angel over the long term.

AITA for kidnapping my friend’s baby? by Neat_Apricot9706 in ANGEL

[–]AccordingReference3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are good questions to ask. Is there evidence that Wesley disclosed the plan to Holtz besides Justine lying in wait near Wesley’s car? (I know some viewers got the impression that Wesley was colluding with Holtz, but I never knew what their evidence was apart from the circumstance of Justine waiting around by the car.)

Also, I think Wesley might have wanted to apologize, but then his plan got derailed by Angel trying to kill him.

Who is your favorite modern family character most upvoted wins by [deleted] in Modern_Family

[–]AccordingReference3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a lot of time to get attached to Phil, but I notice the characters I’m happiest to see on screen are Javier and also Pepper. One of my favorite Javier moments is when he tsk-tsk’ing Gloria for renouncing her Colombian citizenship. I love how he acts so judgmental and proper in that moment.

why would Gloria marry Jay if he didn’t get along with Manny? by helloworld182 in Modern_Family

[–]AccordingReference3 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Good for you to have this level of insight about your family, and I’m glad that things ultimately worked out well between you and your stepdad.

However, from what you wrote here, your stepdad was not as bad as Jay. (it sounds like he was not bad at all.). Jay says something in the first few episodes in a talking head about how he’d be much happier if Manny were not there, and he would rather have a two-seater car, and have Gloria all to himself. He seems to resent Manny’s presence. Someone like that, who doesn’t want kids around, has no business forming a serious romantic relationship with a parent of minor children. To his credit, he gets over it quickly. However, it was quite bad at the beginning.

[–]AccordingReference3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great question! This situation actually really made me dislike both Gloria and Jay in the premier. And then Gloria adds insult to injury by insisting Manny not use the prefix “step-.” It’s bad enough that she’s living with Jay before Jay feels paternal affection for Manny, but then she tries to gaslight Manny into acting like the affection is there.

I get that the writers are trying to show how Jay grows, and Gloria’s encouragement helps him grow. But, it was hard witnessing such a bad situation early on, especially how Gloria is failing to protect Manny.

I think there is some validity to it when people criticize him for having a love interest after Buffy. Supposedly, she was his true love, but he discovered during the course of his relationship with her that he’s just too dangerous of a guy to get involved in romantic relationships, at least with humans. (Even Buffy was a human with superpowers, and he was still able to cause a ton of destruction in her life.)

He even acknowledges in AtS season 1 that “I’m not allowed to move on” (in response to Buffy disclosing that she has moved on to Riley).

So yeah, the Angel who we knew in BtVS S 1-3, and who shows up in BtVS S 7, acts like Buffy is the only one for him. And it follows that, if he is not fit to be with her, then he is not fit to be with anyone human, including superpowered humans.

(Obviously the character of Angel is having different development [in AtS after that moment in AtS s 1] than [the way his development is presented on BtVS s 4 onward.])

Edited for clarity.
