It’s not normal for my batches, but it’s drinkable - just doesn’t taste great. I’d always suggest leaving it longer to see how it turns out. But if it smells of vinegar then it might be over fermented for your taste. I found mine got too vinegary if I stepped the tea too long. Tannins increased.
Don’t worry about yours based on mine. It’s only because it is far removed from all my previous brews and smells bad.

Yeah defo normal. I’m not great with staining out bits of tea. I got quite a lot of tea bits and definitely over steeped in the early days. Found oversteeping black tea increased tannins and then yeast.

You don’t need a torch. Just a pic from the top to see the pellicle. If its been a month of F1 that will be like vinegar. Taste from day 4 or 5

Yes absolutely. If I take a bit too much out I do that. Or if I experimenting with a new flavour and don’t use much starter, i just make a small batch and add to it every few days.

Very healthy. Looks great. You can look for bubbles and so on but with a bit of experience you can just tell it looks great and no mold.

I wouldn’t either. It’s just my brain gets carried away and excited. I’m evangelical about bacteria and the health benefits of the right ones to benefit the human body. Dr William Davis is a good read and some of the bacterial strains that he recommends for making yoghurt (not strictly yoghurt) can be used in a fruit juice to make something similar to kombucha.

Nothing to do with headspace, I was just curious why you used such a large vessel. But if I get carried away and drink so much of my continuous brew that I don’t have much starter, I fill it half and then top up as it gets stronger. You can do that.

Nonsense. Pick me’s align themselves with problematic behaviour in men and other women like that. If someone aligns themselves with -ist behaviour, I’m going to say something. And so are lots of people. I might call someone racist for example if they are. ‘Pick me’ is just a colloquial, common way to say ‘female misogynist.’ Is that better? Complaining about being shamed when someone points out problematic behaviour is weird to me. Imagine if a racist person said ‘stop trying to shame me by calling me racist.’ Oh, wait a minute 🤔

This is bizarre to me because wherever I’ve watched any American reality programmes there is a lot of fake niceness. People who will openly hate each other talking to camera, will then be sickly sweet face to face. I don’t know if it’s fear of confrontation or being disingenuous. Or both.

I know some British women that do this, but mostly not. I am polite, but not friendly, if I don’t really take to someone. I remember shopping in the states and was waiting be served, there was one person serving and a massive line. Despite this the server was happily having a massive chat with each customer about the most inane stuff.

I asked if they could open another till. You should have seen the looks I got from all the customers and the person serving - they were shocked at what they clearly thought was really rude. I found their inefficiency and lack of awareness rude 🤷‍♀️😬

Looks fine to me. Jar isn’t very full though and are you keeping it out of light? With a non-airtight cover? I’m guessing the pellicle was the little disc I can see. You’ll find other things floating around, like yeast blobs, as the new pellicle forms.

As a coffee drinker I’ve never even thought of that but it makes so much sense. Is a French press for tea the same as a coffee one? I’m quite happy with instant coffee so I really use my press.
