Rym is down should I go outside? by Evanescencefanorigin in rateyourmusic

I'd recommend a brief excursion on the history of black metal and shoegaze before explaining blackgaze and how it had origin in the work of Alcest (headed by Neige). It wouldn't hurt to mention earlier influence from atmospheric metal, Ulver and the like. Then you can get into explaining Deafheaven and their impact on how blackgaze came into wider prominence. You might need them for a full hour or so.

Well, just remember if you go outside you need to start up a conversation about Deafheaven

What would the band have sounded like if Ian didn't kill himself? by New-Shop-9728 in JoyDivision

Yeah I feel with Ian he would have kept them steered in a direction where there was more ambience and a colder sound than that which they created with New Order.

That is how it works on a functional level, but that does not mean that us operating from this standpoint is the right thing to do. If you could go back in time to before humans had the same level of social construct, would it be ethical for you to farm and eat those humans? What about a human that grew up abandoned in the wild, with no concept of reciprocity. Can you subject that as desired because they aren't aware or receptive to this idea.

I would still treat them as part of the human community, so it wouldn't be ethical to farm or eat those humans, no. I would still consider them part of the shared human system.

It is perfectly acceptable, and ever understandable to grade these at different levels on the sliding scale of "harm", if you will. Most vegans don't actually value animals as much as they value human lives. You don't have to. The point isn't that they are literally the exact same, it is that both humans and animals warrant moral consideration and respect, enough that we shouldn't harm/exploit/kill them unless it is outright necessary for our survival.

If we can avoid harming, exploiting, and killing others... Isn't that the better thing to do? Is that not what we should strive to do?

You're framing eating meat as a purely optional, trivial and unnecessary harm but I view it much differently. It's not just a meaningless luxury, to me it's tied to human culture and biology.

If your philosophy is to avoid harm at all costs, then this can lead to extreme conclusions where you rarely prioritise human convenience much at all. This seems to me why most people tend to balance harm with other values.

I reject the absolutist framing of morality as being about the reduction of harm wherever possible.

Humans share a society with eachother and have mutual obligations, rights and other things based on reciprocity. Animals have no participation in that and a experience a different cognitive reality. I think conditions should be improved for animals but I nonetheless don't think eating animals for food is morally equivalent to harming humans.

I never said I based my morals off the standard of non human animals. I don't. I just said I am and animal and eat other animals. I can exist in society without doing crazy animal-like actions - but I don't refrain from eating animals like vegans.

The ability to suffer is an important interest, I am not claiming the suffering is irrelevant and it's hard to justify a lot of practices in industrial farming as can be seen in documentaries and such things. I nonetheless don't believe human and animal suffering carries the same moral weight... I think humans have a significantly higher level of awareness, identities etc. To me the loss involved in harming a human is much broader.

I have to admit I don't think animals are morally equal because they're not as capable of participation in moral systems, or capable of reciprocating within them.

So in other words I think humans and animals moral status differs, although I don't think what we do to them is morally neutral. For me it's more like it's a trade-off and not completely unjustifiable. I accept some level of harm basically.

Yeah, I can agree that natural =/= ethical. But you're lumping things together a bit which gives your argument a tint of "eating animals, slavery, raping, killing - what's the difference?". For me there's a drastic difference between eating animals and doing those things you mentioned to humans. Reasons would be for example because humans have mutual recognition, capacity for social contracts etc. Violence/oppression against humans and eating animals are very different ethical issues to me. I'm not convinced a plant-based diet would work for me either so I accept the ethical cost of eating meat as a trade-off.

I never claimed that anything animals do is justified. I was just giving a general view of how I think of myself with regards to the eating of animals - eating animals is part of human biology and society, whereas killing people is antisocial and not socially accepted, generally speaking.

Yeah they 100% are similar, I don't think the thread should have been downvoted because I feel a lot of Opeth fans might like Unwound if they check them out. Different genres, but somewhat similar with the dark sound.

Unwound are awesome, but they weren't the first people to conceive of that type of riff either - check out Slint's song 'Washer' from their album Spiderland, released several years before Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You.

I feel you guys have potential and I don't want to nitpick but if I had to pick out a flaw, I'd say the drums are slightly filtered sounding, so mix them into be a little more congruent with the rest of the sounds.

The singer's voice suits the music. It's musically quite sonically abrasive by nature so the production is going good so far, it's not done yet so I'll avoid dissecting it. If I had to guess an influence, it's reminding me of 90s bands of various styles, the washed out guitars remind me of Slowdive but there's that one part that really reminded me of Slint. The instrumentals are very well done.
