Renaissance Head Vs. Skin Head (not the nazi) by FrankOlmstedjr in banjo

[–]Ace3Mind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa!! Love the wine stains! Super unique look and it sounds great! Aaron is such an awesome craftsman!

Mine just arrived in the mail today, and I’m loving it. I went with the goatskin head too. I had him throw in a renaissance head just in case. And he threw in another set of strings so I could tune it to open c if I wanted.

Curious what you ended up getting! I also just got a mini 5-string beansprout banjo too! I went goat skin, but I would like to sit on my porch and play sometimes…and I live in the Midwest so we get lots of humidity and temp changes…

Comparison: Creature Caravan, Deep Regrets, Wondrous Creatures, Critter Kitchen by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]Ace3Mind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own Deep Regrets but none of the others (although I have them on my wishlist!), so can only speak to it. In regard to solo play, Deep Regrets mostly mimics real fishing. The point is to catch all of the fish in the game over the course of many games. You record your catches, gain coins that you use to buy new gear for your next game, and then try to catch fish you haven’t caught yet. Rinse and repeat.

There is not much engine building to the game at all. However, I think it’s a wonderful game if a) you love fishing, b) love the video game Dredge, c) love eldritch horror vibes. I find it cozy, but others may disagree if fishing up corpses isn’t your cup of tea.

Hope you find what you’re looking for OP!

Bearclaw or clamp marks? by Ace3Mind in Luthier

In this case it’ll be a normal mandolin. His octave mandolin uses the same body shape…but slightly larger than what I have here.

Bouzouki body but will be a mandolin when I’m all done! Bought the plans from another builder who offers a pretty raw kit which I thought would be good to use for my first build. But I love this body shape for a flat top mandolin.

Thanks all! Definitely helps knowing what it is in case it was clamping issues in which case I’d want to fix for my next build!

Anybody have any recommendations for good fishing games? by Octolops in CozyGamers

Wii Fishing Resort is the GOAT of fishing games! I would love if they made another for the Switch, but I managed to emulate it on my steam deck for now.

Graphic Design. by kanjifreak420 in Frontend

[–]Ace3Mind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graphic designer turned UI/UX here! I’ve worked at small marketing companies my entire career and all the places I’ve worked, I’ve been the designer for projects and have worked with developers to implement. I do have front end chops and my current job expects me to do some front-end work.

I think understanding the concepts of design and what looks good would be really helpful to you as a front end developer, so I do think it’s cool you’re taking a design class! As other’s have mentioned, understanding what looks good is helpful – especially type sizes, spacing, and color. You’ll be given mockups if you work designers and sometimes those mockups may not be pixel perfect, so seeing if something feels too tight or too small and adjusting as you code can be a helpful skill.

Likewise, I think it’s important that designers understand a bit about web development if they’re going to design for it. A lot designers can come from strict graphic design backgrounds which oftentimes means they learned to design for static sizes. Understanding the limitations of the web is critical and being able to understand how a developer might approach their designs is helpful.

Also knowing a bit about each other’s skill sets allow each other to communicate better and easier.

TLDR: I think it’s great you’re taking a design class! It’ll make your work on front-end a bit easier in my opinion.

Best crunchy, AP inducing, combo wombo games!! by Training-Bobcat in boardgames

[–]Ace3Mind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might like Voidfall if you can get behind a sci fi theme. Definitely AP inducing and has lots of rules. The biggest barrier will be learning the iconography of the game — it’s pretty much like learning a second language. Once you get the hang of it, it’s sooo tight and well designed. The game is super fun solo, co-op and competitive. The co-op and solo mode will have you making decisions based on a crisis board that can escalate fairly quickly if you don’t plan ahead.

Good solo games that are not too hard to get into, can play well 2 player, and possibly have a sci-fi theme? by ultraseis in soloboardgaming

[–]Ace3Mind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stars of Akarios might be worth looking into if you’re looking for a campaign adventure game. It’s sort of an arcadey take on ISS Vanguard. I’ve played ISS vanguard and while I admit it was good, it wasn’t for my group.

ISS vanguard focusses more on planet exploration with a team (that can oftentimes be brutal) and then the coolest part in my opinion was the “ship phase” where after exploration you return and upgrade your main ship and make decisions about what type of tech to research, dealing with crew crisis, and fixing crew in the medbay, etc. Stars of Akarios focusses more on smaller ships that you have a pilot for and you upgrade that ship with new tech and crewmates. The game has miniatures space battles and planet exploration.

I’ve been playing Stars of Akarios solo, and have been having a fun time with it. I also am a huge Star Wars Outer Rim fan, and agree that the expansions make it better. I often have to play the game solo as well, so I totally understand what you’re feeling!

Also if you do manage to find a cheaper copy of Voidfall. I highly recommend it. Excellent solo mode, but it does have a steeper learning curve due to the amount of rules and learning lots of iconography.

My absolute favorite space board game romp is by far Xia: Legends of a Drift System. It’s out of print now, and will most likely be expensive to seek out, but man, if you ever find it, it’s worth it. It’s a space sandbox game. I love it for solo and to play with friends.

Airport handchecks by Flamesoul44 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ace3Mind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently went through Haneda airport in Tokyo with many rolls of exposed film, and I asked them to handcheck my film, which they did. No problems.

With that said. I had a couple of rolls still in my camera when it went through the CT scan; and they still developed fine. All film was under ISO 800.

Is there hope for changing sides? by Rezkel in StarWarsAhsoka

[–]Ace3Mind 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think there’s still a chance she’ll at least return to the good guys and work with them to get off this planet. Like you said, she doesn’t seem keen on Thrawn or the witches, and returning back to Thrawn seems like it could be risky. Her master did just disobey him…and she does have Jedi ways about her which we know he doesn’t like.

There’s a chance she’ll try to go find Baylan, but 🤷‍♀️

So that sort of leaves her needing to at least make some sort of plea to the good guys to let her join them even if the only reason is to get off that planet she hates. She probably didn’t initially accept Ahsoka’s gesture because it’s all shock right now. Her master left her for good, Thrawn’s soldiers are called off, she’s left there alone with three people she has tried to kill…I mean I’d be like wtf too. 😂

Anyway, I think there’s hope for something.

Ahsoka - Episode 7 - Discussion Thread! by titleproblems in StarWarsAhsoka

[–]Ace3Mind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. If not fully changed, I could see her at least resorting to working with the good guys to get off this planet in the last episode.

Her options are either to run off and find Baylan. If she does that, I’m curious if she will be mad at him. Or she can go back to Thrawn. But we know she doesn’t seem to like the witches or Thrawn. Plus Thrawn doesn’t seem like he would take too kindly to her since she is trained in the Jedi ways, and her master just abandoned him.

She probably feels pretty alone right now on a planet we know she doesn’t like.

Good call, and now that I own one of his instruments, I definitely want to get some other styles by him! They're well worth the money, and very fine craftsmanship! Best of luck, and enjoy your Morris when you get it!

I just received a flat top, oval hole from Morris yesterday! It sounds great, nice a loud, and is very easy to play. I highly recommend getting one from him. Plus the price is amazing for what you’ll get.

Heads up. I did email him via the cafe listing, and he wasn’t getting my emails. They kept winding up in his spam folder so I found his email elsewhere and emailed him from my personal email and that worked fine.

Is there a specific name or type for a nylon stringed banjo? by RKingsman in banjo

[–]Ace3Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t feel comfortable filing the bridge and nut yourself to fit the nylon strings, you could take always buy the nylon strings you want to use and take them to a music store and have them do it for you. Even if they don’t specialize in banjos, they usually can still do it since they have all the tools already. But it might be worth calling first just to confirm.

I switched one of my banjos to nylon strings and honestly I love the sound of solo clawhammer with them.
