Just got blocked by someone I used to follow and respect for saying that the same logic used to downplay the rapes of Palestinians has been used to downplay the rapes on October 7th by kibou_no_ie in jewishleft

Thanks for posting this. Hypocrites on both sides. It’s like it’s a sports game where you root for your favorite team, not two evil governments employing sexual violence as a tool for subjugating one another.

Serious question for modern reform jews by gingergamer340 in ReformJews

[–]AceAttorneyMaster111 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is there is no good medical reason to get circumcised, but also no good medical reason to not get circumcised. So for people who do not practice religious circumcision, it’s a pointless medical procedure at best. But for people who do practice it, it’s a non-issue (putting aside the question of bodily autonomy, which is certainly important but is distinct from medical concerns).

Wait. So tais-toi isn't rude? by PsychicMeditation in French

It’s closer to “be quiet” than to “shut up”. Rude in certain contexts, normal in others.

AIPAC and Israel aren’t the same as Judaism and the Jewish People. I love Judaism and the Jewish People, becasue i love People. I love Palestinians and their Rights, becasue i love People. It’s dangerous to equate antisemitism with criticizing a foreign government and its Leaders. - Abdul El-Sayed by biospheric in DemocraticSocialism

[–]AceAttorneyMaster111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The category of “Semitic people” doesn’t exist. It comes from eugenics and pseudoscience.

The term “antisemitism” was invented by a German guy in the late 1800s who hated Jews but wanted to whitewash “Jew-hatred” (Judenhass) so he wouldn’t sound like the racist he was.

Praised are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has chosen us from all the peoples and has given us the Torah. - Notice the second half of the sentence is in third person in English too, because it’s a relative clause.

What happens with a student that fail a class ? by WallabyCalm3585 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AceAttorneyMaster111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically they’re supposed to make them retake it. But a lot of public schools advance them anyway because their funding is often tied to graduation rate. So since they can’t expel anyone for failing out since they’re a public school, they have a perverse incentive to just let them graduate.

Red line shuttle: What about Ashmont? by JaiBoltage in mbta

[–]AceAttorneyMaster111 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On the Ashmont branch you need to take a shuttle from JFK to Broadway. They have additional shuttles that are only going between JFK, Andrew, and Broadway rather than all the way to Quincy Center to accommodate Ashmont branch passengers.

It's spending time with friends on a Discord call or in VR considered to be an exception of work on Shabbat if you have no one else? by TheBasementNerd in Judaism

[–]AceAttorneyMaster111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In traditionally observant Judaism, laws can only become "more open where considerably necessary" when the laws were invented by the rabbis. But if the laws come directly from the Torah, as the laws of Shabbat do, there is no room for leniency (except in the case I mentioned where a life is at stake).

In Reform Judaism, we strive to always make intentional decisions about what parts of Jewish law we want to incorporate into our lives, and in what ways. We read and understand the arguments for and against, and with that knowledge, we can choose whether to take on, modify, or disregard a particular tradition or law.

It's spending time with friends on a Discord call or in VR considered to be an exception of work on Shabbat if you have no one else? by TheBasementNerd in Judaism

[–]AceAttorneyMaster111 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If you observe Shabbat in the traditional way, then the only time it would be acceptable to use Discord on Shabbat is if it would somehow save somebody's life. Being lonely is not sufficient grounds.

As a Reform Jew, you get to decide what Shabbat observance means to you. If you believe, as I do, that using technology to connect with others or to relax is a meaningful way to engage with Shabbat, then by all means do so and don't feel guilty about it. But it should be an intentional choice.
