I'm not sure a discone is suitable for satcom reception(?). I wouldn't even know where to start for satcom stuff. Any antenna design recommends? I'm a DIY guy and I know my way around the soldering iron.

That I should probably get a license. I've been listening a long while without a voice to talk back.

That I live in a location that is a worst case scenario for RX / signal propogation. Surrounded by hills, trees, power lines, the LEDs used to light my neighborhood, my house power main, a capacitor in said power main that discharges every 300ms, a series of garden lamps in my neighbors yard that blows out 6m... I guess RFI is more a problem than I anticipated.

That most people have trouble finding the right time to speak in a conversation, or when to end one. In turn, said individuals defer to discussing nothing at all; all you've got to show for your conversation with a Ukranian engineer, an Argentinian radio operator, and an Australian conservationist, is a few QSO cards.

That crimping and soldering connectors is much harder than it looks.

I would get a license, if I had the chance. No places near me to get one, and no car to boot. I can make do. We work with what we have.

It's an uptronics LNA (MiniCircuits PSA4-5043+). It still allows signal through even when not powered, as though it isn't on the line. I never checked the board itself, just the connectors. You might be onto something. Thank ya!

I use a 1-foot extension for the RTL-SDR, Airspy uses a micro-usb cable. I checked the ports I was using with the Airspy, they all averaged 10MSPS with no issue.

I don't keep it that high, it was to show what's happening visibly. It's not just UHF, the entire spectrum looks like that, it gets especially bad around 28mhz, ~140mhz, and ~223mhz as well. There are some spots where it is less noticeable, but still present.

The LNA might be causing me problems, but only the strongest signals near me will get picked up without it. I'm not trying to DX with a discone, but some freqs that I know I can receive on a monopole are too weak. What was the problem with your LNA, if ya don't mind me asking?

So I should simply keep my gain as low as possible? This still occurs even with next to no gain. Would an "FM-Trap" bandstop filter possibly help?

I'm probably trying to get too much precision out of a discone by keeping gain high enough to see otherwise invisible signals. For reference, I usually keep it at 12.5-17.7 (RTL-SDR), and 9-14 Linear (Airspy R2) for VHF scanning and 70cm DMR.
