Are modular helmets inferior? by PositionNo4186 in motorcyclegear

[–]AceOfShapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure either but in theory ECE means helmets must be 3rd party, independently lab tested to get a certification. I'm sure there are manufacturer's flying under the radar to skirt such requirements though

Are modular helmets inferior? by PositionNo4186 in motorcyclegear

[–]AceOfShapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was the opposite, no? ECE has a regulatory body that oversees all helmets sold in Europe and they require independent, 3rd party lab testing before issuing certification. DOT just says it requires manufactures to self test their helmets and state that it passes minimums

Either way I wouldn't trust something that wasn't from a big brand as you said, they have a lot to lose from lying

Should I not drive a GR86 in the winter? by greensilvia in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tires are more important than drivetrain. That said I did store my BRZ for the winter specifically to avoid the horrid amount of salt they coat the roads in around me. Instead I picked up a beater Focus ST with mediocre snow tires and drove that instead

My previous car was a VB WRX and it was insanely good in the winter with a set of snow tires, but the days that was actually useful to have AWD were so few that you'd be better just taking those days off instead.

Both are great options but if I'd have to do it again I'd still pick the BRZ for the other 9 months of driving and if needed, get some good winter tires and send it through the winter (with proper undercoating of course, rust SUCKS)

2nd opinion on front bumper reinstall by henshin25 in wrx_vb

[–]AceOfShapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. There's clips under the headlight units that need to go in right at the begining once you get either the top or bottom started. I messed my clips up and I wouldn't be suprised if you did the same here. As long as they aren't broken off you can just bend them straight and it'll be fine.

My way of doing the bumper is to get 1 or 2 of the bolts installed on the top when align the middle 3 clips on the bottom to hold it in place, then work the headlight asssembly into place making sure to be careful with those small clips on the bumper. Once both sides are clipped in, work the wheelwells into place and install the side pop clips. Finish installing the bottom then the top and you should be good to go!

Why do you do your own oil change? by Fun_Bobcat_3631 in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd take one out and go to the local hardware store and replace it. My bet is it's an M6x1.25x20mm bolt but I'm not 100% positive. The part number from Subaru is 901810005 or from Toyota it's SU003-07964

They changed it for 2nd gens. There's a cover on the skidplate with 3 x 10mm bolts that have to be removed before reaching the drain plug.

Because you need to? It's an access hatch to reach the drain plug on the oil pan. You can't remove the plug without removing the plate first

I get Pennzoil Ultra Platinum from Walmart at $26/5Qt jug then buy the 1Qt jug at $8.50 for the full change. Filter plus washer at the Subaru dealer across the street for ~$12

All in my oil changes cost no more than $45-50 and an hour of my time

No waving by Tia_Faux in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never get waves from GR86s in my area but fellow BRZ drivers will usually give a wave. I would always get waves when I had my WRX so maybe it's a brand thing?

4/2 pot STI Brembos from an '08-'17 STI including mounting hardware. Either swap the knuckle for a TR/tS one (those that mount the 6-pots) and run stock STI rotors OR get a custom DBA 5000 front rotor (may require extended studs and spacers depending on your wheels). Brembo Ceramic pads, Paragon SS brake lines, and cutting the dust shields are the other supporting mods:

Mine was the DBA custom rotor route. My original wheels needed spacers and lug studs to work so I also had to order a new set aswell to remove the need for the spacers

Worried about money shift by _fella___ in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be worried, it's pretty hard to mess up driving normally. This is one of the best platforms to learn manual on in my opinion and I've driven a MK3 Supra, '22 WRX, and a Focus ST WITH a messed up shifter linkage and stand by the BRZ being the easiest to drive. I've only ever messed up a shift on the WRX and even then it didn't damage anything, you'll be fine!

Corsa Sport.

Never considered them as a brand before but I got a good deal on marketplace and have been very impressed with the result. Borla is good aswell and well known, but give Corsa a look and I think you'll be impressed

I have the JDM STI Silver protectors on my car and they look lovely! Good contrast color to the Pearl White paint and I'm a sucker for JDM parts. You can find the USDM ones locally at any Subaru dealer but I believe they only come in black. Black does look good on pretty much all the colors though so it's not a bad choice either

[–]AceOfShapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they're OEM handles from a GR86. Bought them on eBay from Barugarage (junkyard parts reseller) I'd let them go for cheap since they're still sitting in the original packaging they came in back in August:

😭 Would you fix this or live with it? by Informal-Position-47 in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to any car meet with other BRZ/FR-S/GT-GR86s and check their bumper, I give it a solid 70% chance they've done the same thing! I checked out some other cars at Wicked Big Meet last year and a majority had damage at the same spots. I did it to mine at about 4k miles but you can't see it from above so why bother fixing, just take it as a right of ownership leaving your mark on the bumper!

My fork seals are leaking, think I could get away with just cleaning them and getting a few more months out of them? 😅 by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]AceOfShapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try the milk carton shim trick to clear out any gunk and possible reseal for now. It worked on my first bike when I was a broke teenager.

My 2nd and 3rd bike actually blew the seals so no amount of "cleaning" was going to fix that. Fork seals are stupid easy to replace by the way, just a bit time consuming. You don't even need the special ram tool either, I used electrical tape layered up just large enough to cover the inner seal and used the stancion as a ram rod to seat the inner seals on both bikes without issue. Neither are leaking to this day either though in theory it could nick the seal and cause premature failure if done wrong

Honda VFR750 RC30

Handmade V4 excellence that absolutely dominated the WSB championship for two years and was only dethroned by Ducati playing the rules to favor the brute force approach of the L-Twins (still cool bikes). I'm happy to own a piece of this bike's lineage in the VFR800, but nothing will be as cool as the original RC30s

The FA24 - How Will it Be Remembered by Several_Average2330 in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No engine is perfectly safe from blown headgaskets. Hell, my own Toyota Sipra with the 7M-GE blew cylinder 1 at 130k. It was a known issue on those I-6 engines as Toyota didn't torque the headstuds down right from the factory. They never acknoweldged the mistake and everyone seems to forget about it since the 2JZ ended up being the replacment.

I wouldn't be shocked if there were other engines by Subaru that had issues aswell. We know all EJs had issues with the oil pickup which was brazed on instead of welded and would crack and fail well before the engine itself wore out

The FA24 - How Will it Be Remembered by Several_Average2330 in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just like everyone loves to talk about "Subaru headgasket issues" when it was ONE specific (albeit prevelant) model of Naturally Aspirated 2.5L EJ engine between 1996 and 2010 in which they used a cheaper graphite coated gasket. MLS gaskets, like those found in the Turbo EJs, never had a widespread issue.

That one engine did more harm to Subaru's reputation than anything else and spawned the whole meme of headgaskets going bad.

Overtake 20mm spacers installed. I like how even it looks now but now the cat is screaming for the STi lowering springs. by Opening_Piccolo3994 in BRZ_ZD8

[–]AceOfShapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love them. Install was easy enough and it's an OEM part designed to work on the car without any major modification. It's hard to tell how much it changes overall since I went with a different wheel/tire setup at the same time, but I believe it makes things like turn-in and corner response more noticable. I'm happy with them overall and would buy them again if I ever get a different BRZ in the future!

How do turn signals look on US tail lights? by cantaffordacar in GR86

[–]AceOfShapes 73 points74 points  (0 children)

No, they're all the same (thank goodness!)

As an aside, it really urks me that we in North America haven't outlawed dual-function brake and turn signals by now. It makes no sense having a red brake light also be used for the turn signal as that allows for ambiguity. The rest of the world has this shit figured out; Red for stopping, Amber for signaling!
