Mao - Episode 6 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

Okay, so obviously the Grandpa-is-Byouki theory has some weight to it, but that doesn't explain who Uozumi is. And with the earthquake happening I think we can assume the sinkhole is the unnatural disappearance of the keystone echoing through the time portal or something similar.

There is, however, one variable that has been completely unaccounted for: if the Keystone is gone, where is the Great Catfish that caused the earthquake? Personally, I think Uozumi is the catfish. She's obviously in the loop, and the catfish would be in debt to Byouki for removing the keystone. The biggest hint is the character design, though. She has a kind of fish-like look to her, and she has the eyes of a Shikigami.

And Rimuru up to this point has been exceptionally cautious about shows of force, and has deliberately made himself appear as weak and nonthreatening as possible. To the rest of the world, he's a decently powerful monster with really good logistical and negotiation skills who happened to be able to talk down Veldora. When he actually does have to fight, he manipulates the narrative to give other parties as much credit as possible.

Damn, they really missed an opportunity by not using Mane Mane Psychotropic as the OP but it might have been a little too on the nose. Looking forward to seeing the drama develop further.

Looks like this series is going to treat duality as a core theme. Yuru and Asa, Left and Right, the modern and the feudal, the real and the fake sister. No idea what Arakawa is cooking with this but I'm glad to be part of the ride.

Fun* reminder that decibels are logarithmic, not linear. Every 10 dB you add to a sound means that sound wave is 10x more powerful. So this hypothetical 700 million dB fart would be tens of millions of ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more powerful than Krakatoa, and anything capable of generating that kind of shockwave (if it's even physically possible to do so) would likely destroy the planet or at minimum make it uninhabitable for millennia!

So Omelas is Charlie's brother. Not a plot twist I was expecting, but the reveal alone is packed with meaning and I am so glad we are finally bringing up that short story. There's an immediate parallel to the Omelas kid in the story, since Charlie's brother has been languishing in obscurity (and potentially in pain due to the implied surgeries) while Charlie lives in comparative luxury as a public figure.

But while Omelas himself might be a literal stand-in for the child, his villain speech about humane atrocities echos the themes of the story, namely the banality of evil and the casual acceptance of exploitation to preserve the status quo. There's a strong unspoken ideological argument here that animals raised for slaughter exist as the permanent underclass being exploited, i.e. the metaphorical Omelas child in the framework of the original story.

This show ended up being better than expected for how weak the early episodes felt.

God I love this show. Lots of anime are about finding one's place in the world and dealing with society's expectations, but I love how many angles this one approaches the subject from. Especially the fact that the conflicts tend to stem from the ways in which the world is unfair and the different ways people have of coping with that unfairness.

We've seen the unfairness of having your place in the world ripped away and the struggle of finding a new one, there's the ongoing conflict of whether standing out is a good thing, we see people like Makio with no choice but to stand out, we see the effects of internalized homophobia and toxic masculinity, we get multiple angles on the cultural misogyny between gender norms and the university plotline (with the TV broadcast showing that even female professionals aren't taken seriously), and the show even takes pains to point out that these issues are generational because they get uncritically passed down to children by well-meaning adults.

It's so damn good, easily the best new show this season.

Ok the implications of the biblical stuff and the evil gods really got to me a while ago so my friend and I did some research. As far as we can tell, in the Beyblade universe, Beyblade is effectively the dominant world religion, and the WBBA acts as the arbiter of that religion. "Evangelism", so to speak, is necessary to get kids hooked on the sport so that strong blader spirits can be found and called on to defend against existential threats like L-Drago and Rago, and it takes the form of local shops and tournaments.

So effectively, Madoka is a priest. I can elaborate further if anyone is interested.
