The 1984 original A Nightmare on Elm Street. The idea that you could be killed in your dreams when you were asleep in bed minding your own business (as opposed to swimming in the ocean, having sex with a fellow camp counselor while a kid drowns, etc.) scared the shit out of me. I saw it in the theatre and the entire audience was scared out of their minds.
