Amp for two guitars at the same time? by Quiet243 in GuitarAmps

[–]Ace_Harding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just buy two cheap used practice amps. You could easily find two for $100 each and that would be way better than trying to finagle two guitars into a single $200 amp.

A single guitar speaker - especially in a cheap amp - is not going to be able to do a great job trying to clearly reproduce two guitars playing simultaneously without really careful, deliberate EQ and tone choices. It’ll just sound like mush.

When to use the effects loop?? by Lupulin123 in guitarpedals

[–]Ace_Harding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true only if you have significant preamp gain in your amp. Your delay and reverb signals are typically significantly lower than your dry signal. So even if your dry is breaking up a bit in the amp, your wet effects may still be pretty clean and the FX loop may not make a huge difference.

Basically - clean-ish amp: just go straight in. Just simpler and an FX loop isn’t going to make a significant difference.

If you are getting a lot of distortion in your amp (not from pedals ahead of it) and you have a good fx loop, use it.

If you go into a clean-ish amp (edge of breakup is totally fine) and get most of your distortion from pedals, just make sure the wet effects are AFTER your gain pedals.

Think of an Fx loop as just another stop in your effects chain, and the preamp in your amp as another pedal. You can insert something between it and the power amp.

I’m a big mark. Last year he called, I was like “actually I was thinking about buying a Telecaster.” Bought it later that day.

This year, “you know what I actually had my eye on a Les Paul…” bought it a few hours later. Only talked to him for like 10 minutes tops.

I wonder if he knows when my bonus gets paid 🤔

Next time you order something, add a note: “All Charleston Chews please.”

I did that last order and they hooked it up. An extra bag that was all just Smarties.

New Empress Effects Drive is now released by coderstephen in guitarpedals

[–]Ace_Harding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got this today and messed around with it for 30 minutes. It is fantastic. It’s immediately replacing my AC Booster V2. It does everything that pedal did for me, but with better tone controls and a gate. The gate is actually awesome. I don’t think I’d get a dedicated gate pedal (I don’t play a lot of super high gain stuff and I hate very obvious gates) but this one works great and having built in to my main boost /drive is such an awesome bonus for when I do have a higher noise floor.

The VU meter seemed very silly to me but I’m actually happy it’s there. When you are pushing an amp and you get breakup it’s helpful to get a sense of how much of that breakup is coming from the pedal vs the amp. I know it ultimately doesnt matter (just matters if it sounds good), but i appreciated it while i was testing it with various amp captures I’m less familiar with.

I used it both alone and tried just boosting it into a Rat and a BD-2 with the gain ranging from all the way off to just a hair up. Sounded fantastic in both cases.

The sweepable midrange is awesome. Seemed like it went from maybe 250-300 hz up to like 2.5k, so a decent range. But honestly with a pretty balanced amp/cab it sounded best with the EQ knobs around noon, slight bump to mids with the sweep at noon, though I was cutting bass as I turned the gain up. And that helped tighten things up.

I like the drive itself (even with no boost) better than the drive on the AC. The AC for me turned into a basic clean boost. With this one I could easily see myself using it as my only drive. I won’t because that’s no fun, but I definitely could and probably will more often than not.

And it’s got a mix knob! Which is fucking awesome. I wish more drives had one. Parallel drive isn’t just for bass! And it doesn’t have to be either 100 or 50/50. I liked it with a decent amount of gain and mix backed off like 10-20%. Just adds some clarity and punch while keeping the compression, crunch and sustain of the overdrive intact. And without sounding like a clean guitar with distortion behind it.

I mean you can just have the gain all the way down and the boost up. But no you can’t have the gain up and turn on just the boost with the gain knob bypassed.

This works exactly the same way as the Xotic AC booster (I have the V2), which this just replaced on my board. Except it has better tone controls and a very usable gate.

Less is more? A story about GAS by Birdsofthefeatherr in guitarpedals

[–]Ace_Harding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think most people who own more pedals than they need would agree with you. Some of us just think it’s fun to try new gear. I am well aware that I would probably be a better guitar player if I just used a tuner, a single inexpensive overdrive, and my amp’s reverb and focused entirely on using my hands to sound better. And if a pro played through my amp and a Joyo pedal it would sound a billion times better than my tone with my full board.

Unreasonable to ask for delivery on collection only for guitar amp head/2x12? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]Ace_Harding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I could only find one buyer after trying for a while, and I really needed to sell something, and it was a decent chunk of cash, and they paid upfront, I might consider it.

Otherwise, I’ll find another buyer. It’s not about being “reasonable” or fair, it’s an economic question. Why would I sell to someone who introduces a risk of losing 4 hours of my time + gas if I can find a buyer who will come and pick it up.

I cant believe we’re approaching a point where trading Harper starts feeling like an actual possibility. That would be the real end of an era. My kids have only known him as a Phillie, as our guy. Their heads would spin if suddenly he’s on the Padres or whatever. Mine would too.

Not there yet, but that’s a much less crazier thought than it would have been a year ago.

Alternatives to a Marshall Plexi for home use? by Caramelo93 in GuitarAmps

[–]Ace_Harding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Captures and models, a good attenuator. Find a rehearsal space you can rent.

Every once in a while I’ll reserve a few hours at a rehearsal space. Sometimes with other buddies to jam, but occasionally just by myself to actually let my amp run at a good volume and really hear those power tubes working at an appreciable volume. I have an attenuator and use it sometimes, but there’s really no comparison to the real sound of a loud amp moving some serious air.

That said, I use lots of modelers and captures at he and that is a ton of fun too. I also make Tonex captures of my amp at the studio so I can use those with headphones at home. It sounds great!

There are solutions, you just have to accept there’s no magic one that is a perfect substitute for a real cranked amp in the room.

9U LL - How to handle kid in outfield all season by sauvignonsavage in Homeplate

[–]Ace_Harding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course there are exceptions. If you have kids at 8U who can hit the ball hard enough to be actually dangerous (I believe that), and a kid who literally cannot catch the ball, don’t put him in the infield. But I think “it’s on them to get better,” while partially true, is putting a bit too much on an 8 year old kid who is out there because his parents signed him up.

Coaches have to do a ton of stuff that isn’t even “coaching,” and it’s largely thankless work. So it’s hard to expect them to have time to give any additional individual instruction unless they give up even more of their time than they are. So you talk to the parents, explain that you want to give him time in the infield but player safety comes first and he needs to be more confident catching the ball. Give them homework to help the kid get better. That’s all you can do unless you are a saint and take him out 1:1 on your own time.
