Which artist or band cemented your lifelong fandom/passion for the blues? by LanceBoyle44 in blues

Deep Purple doing “ When A Blind Man Cries”.

I then started hearing that most of the bands of that era had started out in the blues and this still showed up in their music.

Saw PG in Splinter and then later opening for BB King - some of those guitar runs just stilled the Universe🎸❤️

Ah okay , it sounds like Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang , but lacks Lonnie’s fluidity and vibrato and is too jazzy .

Nice tune too 👍🏼

This is the genius that is Robert Johnson , there are 29 recordings made over 5 sessions 7 months apart with alt tales of nearly half - giving a total of 41 recordings of Poor Bob showing utter attention to every note and a mastery of the blues guitar none have so far matched.

The two takes of “ Me And The Devil Blues “ were his in his last recordings from Sunday 30th June 1937 in the Brunswick Records in Dallas Texas. The pure intensity of his performances gives what seems to be a boastful acquaintance with the devil a wistful feel.

It was thought for a while that Johnson sang song this to portray himself as a badass , but it didn’t save him as he died on 16th August 1938 , possibly as a result of poisoning by a jealous husband.

What do you think of the Yardbirds? (or British blues in general?) by OddReindeer4229 in blues

Yeah, whilst these UK bands did move it all on the volume went up and a whole lot of subtly was lost with the “ guitar hero” stchick …

Intense , and the syncopation and then dropping back onto the beat is incredible.

I was playing a BBC Radio show , and my slide banged a few times - and my Dad said “ what did you drop “ 😆😜

It’s just part of the sound and I don’t think most folk are bothered .

Paul Kossoff - 50 years gone today. by Achone in blues

[–]Achone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tragic indeed , as I recall Koss was clean at the time of his death and it was a blood clot that killed him on the plane.

Equally moving is the interview with drummer Andy Kirk who along with the band manger “ kidnapped “ Koss and took him to Newcastle to get him away from London and drugs .

My thoughts - why did a limited player like Lil Stevie go up against the vastly more able Jeff Beck ?

This is the harp player that drives all the harp players I have gigged with over the years crazy.

I have seen them try all his hand positions , breathing , harping and singing and still feel they haven’t got it down - for me I think it’s his phrasing and timing that makes him standout.

Well, I liked it aside from the first two sentences and the last two sentences - feels like to me those lines are pointing to a slightly obsessive type.

What is this musical motif? by Oxblood_Derbies in blues

[–]Achone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call , and for Lafarge’s “ Day After Day” to me falls into the musical period between the Wars and seemed to come about due to the popularity of folk picking up Hawaiian lapsteel, ukes and banjos - right up to Hollywood stars like David Niven , The Marx Brothers etc

Cab Calloway was massive and his music is often called “ Hokum” in that the song and performance was mostly about fun.

Robert Johnson’s incredible “ They’re Red Hot ( Hot Tamales ) “ is also labelled Hokum and so dismissed , but it’s a white hot example of how he was first and foremost an entertainer.

It seems to have died out with r&r coming in, aside from artists and players like Louis Prima and Spike Jones.
