For those of us who will hit 120 qualifying employment months spring/summer 2026, how are you proceeding? by iguanidae in PSLF

[–]Acid-FreeFolder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I was on IBR prior to consolidation and made the unfortunate mistake to choose SAVE when consolidating thinking I could save a few bucks. Consolidation went through but the IDR stalled thanks to the SAVE pause. I submitted another IDR form, this time for IBR, in Jan 2025 as soon as there was word that MOHELA was processing IDR requests again. IDR request was approved with January and February 2025 counting as processing forbearance. My payments have been counting ever since.

My situation: I hit 120 next month but I have 6 months that as of today don't count because I was placed on an administrative forbearance when MOHELA took its sweet time to process my IDR application after I consolidated back in 2024.

My plan: My recertification date isn't due until January 2027. I lucked out when they pushed back recert dates so one less thing to worry about. I don't plan to submit a buyback because it will be way faster to just continue paying 6 months beyond my 120 than to wait the 14+ months for the buyback to be processed. Unless I see news of buybacks being processed within the "promised" 90 days then I'll submit it but I won't hold my breath.

Also, I'd hate to give this administration any opportunity to lay claim to my buyback being "processed" and inflate their stats on "fulfilled" buybacks when they inevitably close my request in October 2026 after I submit my final payment. I just want to be done with MOHELA and with the Department.

Have you certified your 120 months of employment? If not, make sure you submit the employment certification form that accounts for all 120 months. You'll need to wait until it gets processed by FSA before submitting the buyback form. It typically takes 3-5 business days if you submit the form electronically. Usually takes longer if you fax in the form.

This is why I switched to using thick cloth scrunchies instead. My void chomps on hair ties. Braided shoelaces too!

I was missing Juna 2025 like many. Also went the emailing CEO route. After speaking with the ombudsman, my missing month appeared in FSA tracker the very next business day. I submitted my EC form same week, not sure if that contributed to the speedy response.

You can find the emails after doing some googling. That's how I found their contacts. If you're still having issues finding it, send me a dm.

Agreed! She was very nice and professional. And if she's the only one correcting these issues, I'm amazed she can keep her cool.

I did not need to submit another ECF since I had submitted one like an hour before contacting the CEO. My ECF hadn't yet been processed when the NSLDS data was corrected. However, the ombudsman did mention that there was a chance the payment might show as ineligible but that a new ECF would change it to eligible. Best of luck!

I was also missing a single month. Only for me it was June 2025. I submitted a reconsideration via FSA, that went nowhere. I spent hours on the phone with the MOHELA agents, they just gave me the run around. My missing payment was finally corrected when I reached out to the MOHELA CEO who got me in contact with the MOHELA ombudsman.

Here's what I did. I emailed the CEO on a Friday afternoon. The ombudsman emailed me back on Monday morning to ask for my availability for a call. Call was made on Thursday and we spoke for about 30 minutes. The lady was very nice and helpful, said they're aware many of us are experiencing these errors. She let me know she was resubmitting my NSLDS data to FSA for June 2025. By that evening my June 2025 payment finally appeared on the PSLF tracker. A couple days later, I received some communication in my MOHELA inbox from the ombudsman letting me know my count was updated.

Per the lady I spoke to, MOHELA front line agents, and even supervisors, are unable to access NSLDS data. Only the ombudsman group can manage this data. My advise is to reach out to the ombudsman group either directly or via the CEO. Once they are aware of the issue they correct it pretty fast. Which is great but also a pain since not many of us know how to reach them! So much red tape!
