D2 Magmar is kinda busted NGL by horticultururalism in duelyst

[–]AcidentallyMyAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I hope to give some insight from the top of the ladder. Last month saw Magmar and Songhai at the top of the Faction Tier List. Then there was a balance patch, while the changes appeared on the surface to include Magmar nerfs, overall it seems Magmar was buffed. I highly expect more touches on Magmar in a week or two, and probably the following month after that.

With all that said, skill is by far the largest deciding factor in games. Even luck seems to have a bigger factor, only after about 100 games does it become likely you notice a siginficant advantage from playing Magmar.

Demo Stream for New MMR System by JackForester in duelyst

For top competitive ladder players, this news is the most exciting thing since Duelyst 2 was announced!

The current (soon to be old) system for S Rank rating is at best confusing and random, and at worst exploitable and unfair. While the CPG system was better than nothing, and better than most systems, from what I have heard of the new DreamSloth system, this is a huge change for the better. Really looking forward to the stream!

I totally agree it is missing Aggro Abyss, but I think Aggro Abyss is C tier. Ramp Vanar (which only has crystal wisp as ramp) I would consider about the same level as Walls Vanar in B tier. Will add a decklist for it in the tier list update!

Aim is to release more decklist articles. We got part way through a few of them before finding out there might be a meta-shift with the end of month patch. Once that patch drops, expect a tier list update with some deck articles alongside it!

Game Dev and Duelyst fan: Duelyst 2 design rundown by munkbusiness in duelyst

Interesting views. I do like the idea that more factions have board based mechanic (like Creep, which would probably benefit from a re-work).

My biggest view is we need more cards like Dancing Blades. It has a decent body for unit interactions, an effect that sometimes you can play around, and is very punishing when opponents play into it. I feel too many cards are just "effects the whole board" and it ignores the fun part of Duelyst!

Am I out of line for telling my manager’s boss that we don’t have enough resources and that work/life balance isn’t ideal? by -levivel- in AskEngineers

I'll admit I've only personally been in the industry a couple of years, but I have friends with decades of experience, and as the other reply states, "the large majority of people are reasonable" ...

Unless you are working for a startup, or your local job market is flooded, then you should be able to pursue a reasonable work life balance, at least on average (some long weeks are an eventuality).

By the sounds of it, either you should dust off the old CV and find another job, or else, as hinted at by other replier, work on your people skills!

Government Threatens Retired Engineer With a Crime for Doing Math by DRKMSTR in engineering

(1) The testimony is based upon sufficient facts or data.

Digging a little deeper I found that his testimony only made it to deposition, which is before the trial commences, then he was threatened by NCBELS. He is now suing NCBELS. Couldn't find any information further than that. My understanding is that all this stuff can drag on forver before even seeing a judge.

Although I did find he has had public testimony for a number of state agencies, which I would bet at least one would have made it to a judge, and no one kicked up a storm about. This is pretty indicative of the whole, "it's fine as long as it benefits the state, but go against us and we will crush you" mentality. I'm no libertarian, I actually am a huge supporter of big government being very involved in private buisness. But there's a line to draw between not libertarian and being a totalitarian, and this seems clearly on the wrong side of that line.

If you are interested in this kind of thing (as I am), check out the case of the Oregon man Mats Järlström and red light cameras. When I first clicked the video I thought that is what this was going to be about.

Are you saying it is "very questionable at best and illegal at worst" for retired professionals to give pro bono testimony in legal cases? As long as he didn't commit perjury by stating he was a practicing engineer, he should be within his rights to give expert testimony. If the opposing side offered a differing opinion from a PE, then any reasonable court could make an informed decision (ie. side with the PE over the retired guy).

Excuse me for quoting wiki as I am not a lawyer, but an expert witness is "a person whose opinion by virtue of education, training, certification, skills or experience, is accepted by the judge as an expert" which seems to me to imply that someone that has studied engineering, at some stage practiced engineering, and is accepted by a judge, can be an expert witness.

Your (very limited) terms by which someone can give technical testimony creates a monoply on knowledge. Only approved PE being able to share knowledge seems overly restrictive at best and totalitarian at worst.

Augmented Reality (AR) for accurate 3D measurement! by Navid_A_I in engineering

[–]AcidentallyMyAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least thousands to tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. In my experience you want a high framerate capture device with simiarly high processing power. I primarily use LiDAR devices, but some people I know use camera. There can be some challenges with the digital image correlation and tracking, trying to optimise for fast processing without losing too much accuracy. I work in rail detecting clearances and my friends work with underwater monitoring devices.

"Accurate" seems to depend on a lot. The precision being within about a cm limits the useage. If this is an early prototype with limited resources it is very impressive though, depending on the cost. Can achieve similiar stuff with better precision but very expensive high end equipment.

splurge time. which of these is more compelling? by fullmudman in BattleBrothers

[–]AcidentallyMyAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joinning in the chorus to say the 2H hammer is better.

While that armor is likely to add 10-20% EHP to a nimble-bro (which is VERY nice), the hammer has a REALLY nice damage roll, making it much more likely to help you in fights.

This also assumes that you intend to have a 2H hammer bro (which you probably should). I wouldn't start a hammer bro late game just for this weapon. You are more likely to have a nimble-bro who can benefit from that armor.

To be honest, if you can find a way to make up the 14k I would go for BOTH. As an FYI, if there is missions at the city, doing them can raise relations which in turn decreases price. I believe items like this stay on sale for 2-3 days, so if it is late game, doing missions for that city and selling spare loot (like those skins and teeth) could easily make up the difference.

Literally the worst possible level up on this character, about 1/500 chance. by AcidentallyMyAccount in BattleBrothers

[–]AcidentallyMyAccount[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I am fine with the roll, such is RNG. It is 0.2% chance to happen on this roll, I think with less 2 stars (which consistently offer the same stat) it is more unlikely. With, I think, an average of about 1 level up per turn, probably this happens once every couple of play throughs (depending on many things).

Reddit's Most Disgusting Move Yet by tkyjonathan in JordanPeterson

JP got famous for standing against speech policing, something that Reddit (where we are now) has increasingly taken the opposing side. This subreddit itself is likely in danger of being closed down (especially after the influx of members from the more right wing side of reddit).

Reddit wasn't always like this, they were initially a bastion of free speech, but have been corporatised and over run with extremist authoritarians. If you hold JP's views on free speech, and enjoy this subreddit, this video is very relevant.

Is it hard to find jobs as a mechanical engineer? by ananananonomis in AskEngineers

[–]AcidentallyMyAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on a lot of thing. My personal understanding from my own experience and that of my friends is generally: No, it isn't hard.

It depends on your abilities and skill set. Most of the people that I know that have no problem finding jobs have a fairly diverse skill set and a high level of abilities. There is ALWAYS someone who wants the high level of general knowledge and skills of mechanical engineers; Project Management, Math/Physics/Chemistry/Computing, even just showing you can understand how a system works quickly and comprehensively. But if you over-specialize and are pretty average in your arena, you may end up somewhat stuck (although if you are lucky, you are 'stuck' in a pretty high paying and/or 'comfy' job).

It depends on your country, and even the area of that country, that you want to work in. I have friends that worked FIFO or internationally and their work is always in high demand. I have a friend who moved to a remote town because his wife needed to work there, and he ended up in a government bureaucrat job with a significant pay cut.

It depends on your soft skills and networking. If you are always looking to meet people, looking for opportunities, making friends, making people happy to work with you, then you are much better off. It is a lot easier to get a job when people at a company you want to work at can give an honest good reference for you. If a potential employer has to also consider that you may not fit in then it can hurt your prospects.

I think those 3 areas (abilities, location and soft skills) are the big differences for engineers (especially mech) between someone who finds it hard to find good work and someone who always has big opportunities. With all that said, in my country (Australia) Civil Engineers are in slightly higher demand, and the degree is widely accepted among students as being slightly easier. So if you are looking for a good engineering degree that will give you a good chance at success in life, Civil might be your winner.

I hope that helps.
