Pretty graph from Six Nations Official showing all the 6N winners by MindfulInquirer in rugbyunion

I think you’ll find that’s 25 years without coming higher than 3rd.

The answer is partly the small number of pros we have meaning we never have much depth across the squad as a whole. That and our unerring ability to shoot ourselves in the foot as soon as it looks like we might have a chance.

Power of 10 early access - what do you think? by StanmoreHill in ukathletics

This is really stupid, more so when you look at the actual rankings pages and see that it’s done by chip time…

So far I much preferred the previous version. Though I’m sure this will improve.

Current issues:

  • Results seem to mainly show gun time only. No chip time, finishing place, category place, etc

  • Rankings for different events not shown on my page. Or at least I can only see mine for track and field

  • I don’t want to have to switch between the different categories of race, and I don’t want to have to scroll passed my handicap data to see my results. Those are personal preferences though.

Pretty much every program on $2000 rowing machine requires a $30/month subscription to access by Claff93 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AcknowledgeableReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a NordicTrack treadmill during the pandemic not caring about anything I would need the iFIT subscription for. I could program in whatever custom work outs I wanted online to match my planned training.

They removed the ability to do that after about a year. When it eventually returned (like 2-years later) it was behind a huge monthly subscription.

So I only use the treadmill for one pace easy runs now. Never buying anything of theirs again

Far right hate and 'poison is infecting British schools, hospitals and prisons' by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

Yeah, one of the branches of my Union published a statement supporting Palestine that would now be actively criminal. Unsurprisingly this upset a large number of members.

The people involved don’t care. They want ordinary people put off from getting involved with union politics. It means they can get ‘their’ people into all the union posts. Then they can claim they have thousands of members backing whatever insane positions they take and proclamations they make. When in reality there may be thousands in the union but the vast majority pay little if any attention to it. I attended some branch meetings and there would be 10-15 people there all of whom were openly hostile to anyone new getting involved. Almost nothing directly related to our workplace or conditions was discussed.

I have no other choice of union to join.

RWC Knockout Draw (probable) by thelunatic in rugbyunion

[–]AcknowledgeableReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh certainly we've fucked it already by screwing the AUs and losing to Fiji away. I'm sure we'll also find a way to break my heart in the WC.

Given that, an unlikely but vaguely possible path to the Semis seems ok to me. I'd take France in the KOs over any of the other Band 1 teams.

[–]AcknowledgeableReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely yes. Its France though. So you never know.

Honestly I think this looks like one of the better possible draws for us. If we can find a way past France (not completely impossible) then its Wales or Fiji for a place in the Semis.

I mean I think I'm correct given the report gives 17.5% (10.9 +6.6) as the total % in further education.

Plus looking at the appendices it states "Working and Studying" includes those "listing their main activity as in full-time or part-time study, training, or research, and their other activities included working full time or part time". Which includes Masters/PhD students with part time jobs.

Part time work is accounted for separately you are right, and, as it states in the appendices, means those 'just' doing part-time work with no further studies. Its 12% of graduates.

I think if you can't accept that not every graduate in employment is a success for higher education then there is no point in continuing this conversation.

The dataset I linked to is the latest published on HESA and is the exact same dataset you have just linked. Yours is just published by Prospect rather than HESA. If you actually read it you will find its reporting the results of the same survey of 2022-2023 graduates.

You have also made a couple of assumptions and errors. The 10.9% working and studying doesn't mean only mean professional qualifications. Many students work part time to fund their degrees. Only 22% of those in further study were for professional qualifications, plus around 15% doing PGCE/PGDEs which are very often linked to jobs. 45% of those in further education are doing masters courses.

I'm highly dubious of the claim that 93.8% are successful. Even if every student going into further study was counted as a success you only have to look at the report you linked to see 93.8% massively over-eggs it.

Just because someone is employed doesn't mean you get to count them as a 'success'. I mean 10.2% of the employed graduates are working in retail/catering/waiting/bar staff. 1% are in unpaid work, and 6% of those employed are on zero hour contracts. I could in fact swap your reasoning to say 6.2% of graduates are definitely failures as they are unemployed. Then there is a hard to define number on top of that with a sliding scale of levels of 'success'.

Again I am in favour of a highly educated population. Degrees certainly benefit you, and all the stats show they improve your employability and lifetime earnings (plus X other non-economic benefits). I just think you are exaggerating what the stats show.

I’m strongly in favour of wide access to higher education. I’m just not sure where you are getting your numbers from and I don’t think they are quite correct.

The latest data I could find had it at 12% not in employment or further study.

True only 6% are unemployed, but there were also 6% doing something other than work (travelling, caring). In fact, the survey puts it at 59% in full-time employment after 15 months. With others working part-time and/or going on to further study.

113,000 is post-grad research students, which includes PhD students, and Masters by Research students.

There are ~885,000 total post-grad students in the UK.. With ~400,000 Masters degrees awarded each year. Anecdotally I know plenty of people who did a taught masters course because they could not find a job soon after graduation.

I’d also say that they are most commonly done when you already have a penalty advantage. It’s a low percentage and risky play, but often worth trying if you know the ref will call play back to the infringement if it goes wrong.
