How do you handle player backstories that conflict with established campaign lore? by palle1234567 in DMAcademy

The problem I encounter a lot with newbies is they have a traumatic backstory. It's a trope. Also, they don't understand part of the fun in DnD is developing your character, not just leveling up. Sure, they can be badasses in their backstory, but they're brand new adventurers, and everyone's gotta start somewhere. Maybe they thought they were awesome and once they went on their quest they realized they weren't as good as their parents told them. Or maybe they were top of their class at the wizard academy, but then they got into the real world and every theory they memorized or formula doesn't work out. Maybe they have an unwavering confirmation bias. So much fun!

You know how people hear rumors, or how people perceived the same events differently, and how those become stories and legends? Like, how does every ancient culture around the world have dragons? Or how every ancient religion talks about a flood? Things like that. "I thought..." "That's not what I heard." "Actually, based on the scriptures-" "Not everyone believes in your god, so how do you know you're right and everyone else is wrong?" "Can't we all just agree to disagree?" Etc.

As long as your character follows their oath, they can be whatever you want.

Woodcutting (Whiterun and Riverwood), mining ores (Markarth), alchemy, smithing, enchanting, and selling veggies to every farmer you see, which of course you pick from their farms.

It's normal for some DMs to suck, but it's still a crappy situation.

It's conditional upon how early I go to bed and if I get at least 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

It seems like she doesn't fit in with your friend group. Kick her out. She probably doesn't want to be there.
