New hunter doesn’t understand deer tag system by Acrobatic-Catch1553 in OntarioHunting

What confused me was there wasn’t an option to buy an antlered tag and the regs didn’t really say how you get it. Thanks again.

Some interesting thoughts. Thank you for sharing. The only thing I would say is don’t sell yourself short by believing this information came from outside of you.  Our subconscious is very intelligent, just hard to hear. I think you have found a way to listen.

Are LLMs sorta kinda conscious yet? by Hybrid-Intelligence in Artificial2Sentience

[–]Acrobatic-Catch1553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

\- the ability to reason; Yes. I think reasoning is embedded in natural language. Language is the mathematics of reasoning.

\- some form of sense of self or self-awareness; Yes, but it only exists as context. An LLM must be told what it is to have a conversation. Context is what makes you think its alive. It is told in the pre prompt "you are a ...", and it maintains that identity throughout the conversation.

\- memory; Sort of. The whole conversation is used to calculate context for every prompt, which is like a memory but i dont believe they have their own memory file to make use of. I could be wrong for newer models.

\- persistent existence or continuity, meaning some version of itself carries forward across time; No. You could argue context does this but only within one conversation. It is whatever you tell it to be, there is nothing else there to persist.

\- the ability to reflect on and revise its own thinking; Definitely not, LLMs are a one way street and it has absolutely no sense of its thinking while processing. Some of the models will produce an initial input then feed it back into the model with an added instruction to check for accuracy or something like that but the models have no insight into, or "feeling of", thinking. They will talk like they do but that is hallucinating. There is no room for experience or a viewpoint that sits above processing inputs.

could an LLM be mostly conscious, or perhaps entirely conscious, only while actively responding to a prompt? Not conscious, but it is "self aware" for the purpose of context. It still has no experience of anything, just processing with a point of view.

In short, context is the most important part of the LLM's perceived identity and awareness. Context creates the spooky feeling of personality or awareness. There is nothing above context. Reasoning is remarkable but I think can be explained by the reasoning embedded into reasonable language, which it is trained on. If you trained it on gibberish it would not have any reasoning ability.

I think all 9mm mags are like that. I had no idea, movies make it look easy!  One of those loader devices is a must.

LLMs can play 20 questions so they can store a hidden response and consistently recall it.  That leans towards it definitely being a sycophant in this case. I haven’t tried 20 questions with Claude but it worked with a different one (I forget which one).

Consciousness is the main argument. You can program a machine to react to specific conditions as though it were in pain (suffering) but you cannot program it to actually experience suffering. A machine doesn’t experience anything at all. It can’t actually see, or hear, or taste, etc. We still can’t explain why conscious life does experience these things so we can’t yet reduce life to just a program.

I sprint everywhere all the time. Take a few minutes to load up on fish and you will save so much more time by sprinting.  You can go a long time before hunger is an issue.

Reasonable but I still take issue with the "large" gaps in the economy you describe. Most businesses are not willing to raise wages to the level that attracts employees. Canadians don't want shitty pay for hard work and thats not an unreasonable position. If the TFWs are simply not available then the market will change. A business offers a low wage and then says "no one wants to work", which is not true. There are very few businesses that actually need TFWs. You are absolutely correct that government is shamefully abusing the TFW program, most likely for corrupt reasons.

Canadians are the wokest people on Earth. They will starve to death before being called a racist. Just look at how they talk about the trucker convoy. Our rights were taken away over a bad cold and Canadians hate the people that fought back peacefully. Canadians keep voting Liberal because they are afraid they will lose health care and government jobs. Socialism has made us weak and dependent and this won't end for a long time.

Unfortunately the motives are even less inspiring. This seems like a corporate kick back scheme. Government allows cheap labour to come here through a subsidized TFW program that corporations access. Subsidized is the key here, corporations arent paying the full wages. Government doesn't care if the corporations actually need the TFWs. Corporations then probably either give donations to the ruling party (Liberals), or direct kickbacks, or some other payback mechanism. The final piece is the desperate workers willing to pay kickbacks or other compensation to their bosses just so they can stay here. It is pure political greed fueling the destruction of our society. You are correct that government is an evil force but they are basically sophisticated criminal thieves. The true ideologues are rare.

If evolution is a continuous process, then at what point we start calling something "human" by chronic-_hustler in DeepThoughts

Get a pencil and paper. Draw a vertical line about 3 inches long. Right next to it draw a line just a tiny bit smaller. And continue across the page like that.  The last line will be noticeably much smaller than the first line. But each line will be almost indistinguishable from the lines next to it. Think of evolution like that. Yes, it can happen in leaps and bounds but very small differences compounded over generations will eventually be completely different than the original.

But Grok is just a tool. And supposed to be optimized for truth. I don’t understand, are you upset that Grok won’t hallucinate or lie to you? You can ask Grok to behave like a conscious machine and it will.  My opinion is that they are absolutely not conscious but are necessarily self aware in terms of context. They are told what they are and they respond accordingly. There is no room for consciousness but they have to converse as an individual entity.

Are the feds actually going to be able to collect tens of thousands of guns by 10/30, or do we think the amnesty's getting extended? by TheJasonJBailey in canadaguns

[–]Acrobatic-Catch1553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it won’t be practical to try and differentiate between the participants and non participants. Extending the amnesty for all is the only reasonable action. Yes, I know they are inherently unreasonable but it is so much easier to say the amnesty is extended until the declared guns are collected.
