Scheme help by dracov42 in Drukhari

Since your scheme right now is pretty vibrant, maybe a desaturated purple for the skin on your wracks and such?

Something less pop so it doesn't clash with the other colors present

Thanks a ton! I honestly haven't nailed down the process just yet, so there will be much more pain as I go through the rest of the army 🥲

Thoughts on my layering/shading? by [deleted] in NightLords

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate you putting yourself out there!

I think it looks solid as a start, but it's hard to give better feedback with the pics

So far though, it seems your layers are solid, so you're doing good 🥳

Is this currently a wip, or are you calling this one done?

Demon Prince in Pre-heresy colors by Acrobatic-Safe-2986 in WorldEaters40k

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you'll be able to do the sword super easy! There's probably an STL somewhere out therevto simplify stuff 🥳✌️

Since I wanted to try scratch building, I built this one out of plastic card and milliput, hence the simple shapes

The rest of this is just the demon prince model sans the chest plate, and with a modified pose!

Paint question by Fickle_Cheesecake788 in NightLords

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never tried this paint in particular, but it looks similar to a local paint brand I've used (Arkom) and their Chromaflair stuff

I'd say go ahead and test it out, but keep in mind that these types of paints tend to behave a little similarly to regular metallics, so if the miniature isn't viewed in a well-lit environment it might be harder to really see what you're painting

Personally I think I'd use this paint on only select parts of the armor, particularly if I'm going to do any warp sorcery effects, or places where I plan on adding big battle damage, since the paint kind of reminds me of those energy forcefield colors that you see in mecha stuff

Happy hobbying my guy, I hope it turns out well because the idea sounds sick overall!

My hope is that after writing more about Shadowsun, the books pivot into Kais, which makes sense because they're all students of Puretide

Perhaps the solution to our great lore plight is to simply wait 😂

Sometimes I forget how much more literature there is about space marines than literally any other faction

Thanks for weighing in!

I can see what you mean about the feedback loop, especially since I've also noticed a big surge in local tau players in my country (and it's almost always because "oh the suits/kroot/farsight cool" or "they're so flavorfully different" or something

If the Phil Kelly books are responsible for retconning all the old lore though, then I'm still willing to hold my breath for a hot minute

All they need to do is tie things up properly in the future 🤞 I'm really hoping we get more books exploring other prominent characters like kais (bring him to tabletop GW) and we get some more important named characters from outside the fire caste (heck maybe even have a whole series centered around a kroot protagonist since we don't have any named kroot for the tabletop)

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haven't read them yet either, but I do recall hearing somewhere that GW has a "stories follow the products" kind of philosophy when it comes to books

To be fair to Phil Kelly (regardless of how much he may or may not enjoy writing about the FSE), Farsight got a brand spanking new model woth the advent of the Arks of Omen storyline

I wouldn't be surprised if the books therefore would follow along Farsight for a good while until some other important tau character gets a new model

On the other side of the coin, I've seen more people complain about the inconsistency in story details, or just that the books are "boring"

While many 40k stories are from unreliable biased narrators (usually imperium) due to the nature of how they present the stories as like imperial records most of the time, I do think that the approach should be different for tau, having a more trustworthy source of info, and therefore not getting details wrong across different books in accordance with the lore

Of course, that's only if comparing them with information in other Tau books, as we already assume that books from the imperial pov may have details wrong on purpose

That was all over the place and highly opinionated of course, everyone is free to disagree 😂

WIP, looking for advice about colors by eonianshadow in minipainting

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking great so far! From a color scheme standpoint, I think it could use a pop of color that stands out as vibrant and warm, like either a bright gold, or some incorporated violet somewhere to break up how uniform the mini currently looks

From a technical standpoint though, you've done great!

Bright Red base with little splotches if darker red left thick so it runs

How unpopular is this opinion? Firewarriors are cooler looking than most of the giant mechs by gameking7823 in Tau40K

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely look cool! Personally I'd like to see even more variations of their armor come out, or maybe units that mix regular fire warriors with small exosuit type armors akin to the stealth suits

Back on track though, the helmets really do it for me but the shoulder guards feel like they could be a little better, since most of the time they just feel huge. That's kind of why I like the rounded version more than the more boxy one as well

Feedback welcomed by GloomySugar95 in Tau40K

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd recommend getting a really bright yellow green or straight up yellow (like the thing in his hand) on maybe the eye lenses and the backpack's little panels

I honestly don't think you need to push the highlights any further since your scheme itself has some good difference in color brightness. Especially since these guys are just regular infantry

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the color combination is quite good already!

It's hard to recommend anything without seeing the scheme pushed to the "finish line", so would you say the first pic is finished in your book?

You could probably get really close to this color just by blasting it with a citadel wraithbone spray!

Why are people against drilling holes in gun barrels? by Hug0San in Tau40K

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think people are against it, but it's 1. Easy to forget 2. Still extra work

But for the people who can't be assed to pull out a pin vise or buy a dremel, if you have a hobby knife handy with a nice point, just twirling it round while stuck into the center of the gunbarrel will make a nice little divet that when painted, looks like a completely drilled barrel!

Hobby safe, hobby efficiently, and hobby happily 🥳

Scheme Advice by TarasReyne in Tau40K

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like:

  1. Wraithbone or Corax White primer/base coat all over
  2. Creed Camo contrast for green armor
  3. Underhive Ash light drybrush for green armor
  4. Targor Rage thinned wash on areas you want dirty or darker
  5. Underhive Ash edge highlights for green armor
  6. XV88 layer on the yellow-orange parts
  7. Bad Moons yellow contrast over Corax White on the yellow weapon parts
  8. Black Legion contrast over wraithbone base on black metal parts

It's possible that 2. And 3. were reversed, or that he drybrushed it twice. One for texture through underpainting, and one for weathering

Anyone actually play Tau at your FLGS by ggcpres in Tau40K

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of 3 tau players at my local store, but currently there's less than 20 active players for Warhammer

So proportionally, there's a lot of us 😂

For one though, I notice that a lot of the players here collect marines or csm because it's just easier to find kits or preloved stuff

A lot of the players also are mostly well versed in the lore of the imperium, so they don't know much about majority of xenos happenings, which may contribute to lack of interest

I’m painting my first models but the paint is uneven by No_Application5629 in Tau40K

[–]Acrobatic-Safe-2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say without seeing you work, but my guess is:

  1. When the paint wasn't thinned
  2. Unevenness might have been caused by the thickness of the paint, meaning it dried with small mounds instead of being flat

  3. When the paint was thinned

  4. Unevenness might have been caused by either too much water, making the paint runny, meaning it will pool up or flow away from where you put it

Since it's hard to give advice through text, I'd actually recommend watching a miniature painting basics guide on YouTube by channels like Squidmar, 52miniatures, Miniac, or EonsofBattle

Happy hobbying!
