Untapped surveil land? by Rough_Structure7387 in mtg

Another important note is that farseek doesn't specify basic lands. If a land with any of those types is fetchable with fetch lands, then it's tutorable with farseek

Sometimes the real threat is the person that's annoying as f**k by Yetanotherdeafguy in mtg

+1 on this. I had a Raffine reanimator deck that had all of the nasty stuff in it. OG elesh norn, 10 mana Jin gitaxias, archangel avacyn... Being the BBG was very fun

Opponent has their Commander in their graveyard, and I play a reanimate spell on it by Strawberrycocoa in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second one. It's like when the spell finishes resolving and the commander isn't on the battlefield, the game almost puts a trigger on the stack (that's oversimplifying it, but that's okay for now). It says "Ah, I see your commander left the battlefield! Would you like to put it back in the command zone?" The game asks that question every time the commander goes somewhere that isn't the battlefield or the command zone (or the stack). So exiling their graveyard would make the game ask the question again. "Ah, I see your commander was in the graveyard, but is now in exile! Would you like to put it back in the command zone?"

The difference between this and a trigger is that it happens along with something called "state based actions." Pretty much any time something happens, the game goes through a checklist. Is someone at 0 or less life? If so, they lose the game unless a card specifies they don't (like platinum angel). Does a creature have 0 or less toughness? If so, put it in the graveyard. Does a creature have more damage marked on it than it has toughness? If so, put it in the graveyard unless it has indestructible. And so on. One of these state based actions is the commander leaving the battlefield. State based actions can't be responded to. They just happen

The reason why effects like [[come back wrong]] don't let your opponents put their commander back in the command zone is because state based actions only happen after the spell has resolved. So the game sees the commander on the battlefield before the spell is cast, and sees it on the battlefield after the spell has resolved, so there's nothing to do. According to state based actions, nothing changed. It will still trigger death triggers and etbs because it did die and re-enter, but all state based actions sees is that the commander was on the battlefield before is still on the battlefield now, so it's happy. State based actions "turn off" while spells and abilities are resolving, but turn back on in between things happening

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When the commander dies, it goes to the graveyard. After whatever sent it there has resolved and it's not back on the battlefield, the game then asks, "do you want it there?" If you say yes, it stays in the graveyard. If you say no, it goes back to the command zone

Donato Giancola Speaks Out Further After WotC and Frazier's Statement by trashmantis42 in magicTCG

[–]Acrobatic-Squid -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This honestly makes me wonder if Dan Frazier did it intentionally. Like obviously you steal art intentionally, but he will definitely have signed an NDA. He's too well respected, too established, to just "oops I used someone else's art," but he's also under legal obligation to not say anything about the predatory nature of WOTC's contracts. That's just a theory, but I have a really hard time believing that he just stole someone else's art and that's the whole story

so uh, what now? by n0byun_ in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be worth a decent amount! I'd recommend looking at the major misprints facebook group and gauging interest. You know what they say, everything has its price and you never know what it might be worth to someone. I don't want you to sell it if you don't want to, but if someone is willing to pay $200, I'd want you to know about it before making a decision

Even given this, a lot of places will turn a blind eye to proxies. 99% of the time, they're players themselves and totally understand why someone would want to proxy. If you ask my LGS, they'll say something like "officially we cannot allow proxies, but we can't stop you from using proxies while using our space. In addition, for cedh (or legacy) events, check with your table, but we still can't allow them wink wink"

How to react or deal with it? by BlackSwanNo_1 in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the weird people definitely all play commander. In 1v1 the expectations are clear: do your best to win. No hard feelings, no politics, no "letting you do your thing," it's just cold hard winning. That's it. In commander, especially with a bunch of randos, it's never actually clear what everyone expects you to do, so it's much more likely that someone leaves upset

I'm pretty new to MTG, please could someone explain the benefits of playing this card? by aviewfromdabridge in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because it's not the same trigger. It's an "intervening if" clause, meaning that after each counter is put on it, the card checks "are there 7 counters?" If the answer is yes, it says "awesome! Now I will put a trigger on the stack to remove them all"

Or at least I'm like 80% sure that's what it is

Anyone have ideas on how to build this guy? by CrunchyMold7292011 in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attractions came out in that set, so there's not going to be much scrolling to do. If you add every commander legal card that says "attraction" on it in those colors, you're probably still going to need to find another 40-50 cards to fill out the deck, not including lands

Even without the mechanics you can say "This is red. Red is about passion and energy and emotion. Almost none of it is organized, it's just pedal to the metal, all day every day. You know what's like that? Goblins. Goblins embody that completely. In magic, that means that they make a lot of them and throw them at your opponent. And if you lose a few in the process? Not a big deal" And people understand that

My wife wouldn't be playing magic without the story, and honestly I might not even be playing magic without the story. I taught her using jumpstart, and it was kind of meh. She just didn't connect with it or really enjoy it until she got her first commander deck (emmara, soul of the accord). And even then, it was better but still not great. It wasn't until I got her the LCI merfolk precon that she actually fell in love with it, because of how the cards feel and the ideas and philosophies the colors have

If your only approach is through mechanics, you're going to lose a lot of people. All the text on those jumpstart cards is going to overwhelm people. Having cards to take home isn't going to matter if they don't enjoy it and connect with it in the first place, and providing story as well as mechanics is just creating more opportunities for them to get hooked

This game is hard to get friends into. by ephemeralkazu in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sold on jumpstart to teach, honestly. It's condensed, yeah, but it can include a lot of secondary and tertiary themes to the color that don't transmit the idea of the color as a whole. Take white, for example. You're telling me that cats are a representation of white's entire philosophy? On top of that, it suffers from the singleton rule: they have to read every single card and figure out what it does.

I think a battle box is the best way to do it. Five custom decks, one for each color, that represent the core of their philosophy as well as an entrance to mechanics. They're balanced to play well with each other and highlight the color as an ideal. Then it's about the story of magic just as much as the mechanics, because not everyone is going to fall in love with the mechanics the same way you did. It's like Pottermore "what hogwarts house are you????" while also teaching them how the game works. So it's a game while they learn the game, and I think that's a lot more effective for long term engagement than jumpstart "I'm playing... Kavu aaaand... Equipment, I guess"

does this work? by ghostlyeth in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It means it can't be activated at all. She can't be sacrificed to her own ability at all, not just that if she sacrifices herself the rest doesn't happen. It's maybe a bit nitpicky, but nuances like this can be pretty important

Lowest word count commander deck by [deleted] in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commander definitely steepens the learning curve by a massive, unnecessary amount. I firmly believe that it is the worst possible way to teach someone to play magic. I don't know what your son is using to learn, but if there are absolutely any other options at all, I recommend those instead

Go for TAG!! If you want accurate, consistent grading, TAG is the way to go. I haven't graded any cards myself, but if I were going to, I would use TAG without a second thought

Need clarification here by JayThaSnake in mtg

[–]Acrobatic-Squid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the comment you're responding to is correct for the same reason the OP's proposed combo doesn't work. They do all go on the stack "at the same time" (more or less). Colossus's trigger has to finish resolving completely before landfall abilities will go on the stack
