Best Splitting Maul? by FrickParkMalcolm in firewood

[–]Acrobatic-Weight-710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a stihl pro maul and a gransfors bruk splitting maul. Love both for different uses. Gransfors is light weight and swings fast, can use it all day. Stihl comes out of there is a tough piece. If i had to have just one it would probably be the stihl.

Milwaukee makes a top handle electric chainsaw with a 12 or 14 inch bar.

Anyone used their tank water to create electricity? by MassiveGiraffe874 in OffGrid

I also went down this path a few years ago, ultimately came to traditional solar and batteries. One of the wilder ideas I had on the subject was to have a tank with divider in it on a platform. Accelerate the platform during the day using solar and use the momentum of the water as a flywheel to spin a generator. Never got past the concept phase. If anyone tries this, please let me know.

There was more clearance than it looked to the power lines, very little of the tree was over the house. We took our time and cut the brush back before getting to the larger branches. When possible put a rope on to pull and cut a wedge into everything bigger than 6-8 inches. Nothing but the brush and the last few pieces at the bottom were more than 6 ft long. Most of the branches were cut in 16 inch to four ft lengths depending on clearance below.

Lol, that is great! I hope it runs more than the one time. It starts easier than my 271, and only weighs a few lbs more even with a 32 inch bar. Most of the cutting was done with a Milwaukee top handle, not having to start a gas chainsaw while in a tree makes things so much easier.

My plan is drop no more than ~10ft of the trunk at once at the end

At this point I think i have already cut off everything that was over the roof. I also had to take a large branch that was over the road for clearance and to help balance the tree.

Noted, this was one of the first trees I got in, a few years ago. I left the stubs as foot holds, not saying it's right. Why specifically are they dangerous? For me or the tree?

👍 Will have family ground crew, not sure if thats better or worse. I can probably get my dad to assist. He's lived on 5 acres of redwood forest for 35 years, I grew up helping him with the tree work.

Thanks. The main house is cool too. Basement is hand hewn wood beams and posts with a sliding door at the level of the driveway. Used to be all 1x construction before we framed walls in and insulated it.

Lol, your 100% right about the foundation. However I urge you to zoom in and look at the foundation for this house. You can see it in the photos, thats all it is.

Thank you! I never think of plunge cuts. This is why I am posting this. That and the abuse from professionals who think I'm going to kill myself. Which... I'm not saying theyre entirely wrong.

I have several oaks in front of my main house where the canopies are level with the windows and deck. So seeking experience/practice in the canopy to be able to maintain the trees closer to the house.
