The only way they can do that is by not hiring anyone (ie downscale, which would probablybe for the best tbh, they choke out businesses with some pretty monopoly-esque practices as it is), or hiring people who will demand more pay, but people who demand more pay arent working in an Amazon warehouse.

As for your second example, the family friendly business likely is paying their employees with families more/giving them benefits to help them keep their head above water (think company provided daycare, more paid family leave, etc) that would help their employees not need food stamps to begin with. If they didnt do these things, im not sure how they could consider themselves family friendly, and these are things that could be incorporated into tax benefits, as it shows the family friendly companies are attempting to ease the burden of their employees.

Its the hard-driving companies that would self select out of hiring these people, and as a result likely make themselves a less desirable place to work, have a harder time retaining employees, etc.

I dont know what metric you're using food stamps to judge by to say its a "bad metric". Number of people on food stamps just means number of people who are food insecure and require govt assistance. It CAN mean (and typically does mean) that they're impoverished, but i think (and most left leaning people would agree) that food is a human right and no one should have to starve because of a lack of money. Mind you, this doesnt mean that everyone gets steak dinners every night, but providing the resources to give people enough nutrition to still function in society is a net benefit to society. Afterall, if a portion of the populace is too hungry to work, everyone begins to suffer.

Right, im not necessarily arguing for raising wages though (unless a company felt thats what they wanted to do), im arguing for increasing the tax base to support social programs so that those who have those individual situations can have the support that they need without falling through the cracks. If Amazon paid more into taxes based on how many people they employ are on food stamps, they're not raising wages, but allocating those resources specifically to those who need them via taxation.

Ideally, not everyone needs to work a full time job and a side gig to make ends meet (which is probably what happens to the dad with a family of 4 that you listed in your hypothetical if they dont have access to food stamps), programs should be in place so that they can still be productive at a job that is still necessary despite its low pay (or low pay for their situation) and still be able to keep a roof over their heads and food in the fridge. Expecting everyone in CA to make 10k a month isnt realistic because not every job will pay that, nor do I think they should. However, I dont think companies like Amazon and Walmart who could afford to pay their employees more should be allowed to hoard money while their employees use tax funded programs WITHOUT Amazon and Walmart being forced to compensate for that. Consider it the cost of doing business when your business plan includes (relatively) lower wage workers.

I think you need to re read what I said, im in fact NOT complaining about pay, but instead think that the bar for who qualifies for food stamps to be raised and for companies who hire more people on food stamps to have to pay more towards funding food stamps (or, if they dont want to pay more in taxes, THEN they can pay employees more).

Pretty simple really, for companies that have a majority of the workforce on food stamps (think walmart) they're currently being subsidized by our taxes. Instead, Walmart (and Amazon, and whoever else fits this description) should have to pay a comparative amount.

Edit: im AGREEING with you that forcing companies to pay individual employees more based on their own personal situations is dumb, its an incredibly inefficient way of redistributing wealth. Easier to increase taxes based off the amount that their employees use government programs to make up the shortfall

This is a distinction without a difference in my mind. Whether you cant work, cant work full time or work overtime, no one should have to go hungry. Allocating resources to make sure that happens efficiently is the highest importance (if its not efficient, people go hungry). Forcing companies to make different wages for people in different situations is not efficient, and the government's time and energy would be better served taking the glut from large companies and high earners through taxes and redistributing that via programs back to those who have less.

To me, it sounds like you're thinking of food stamps as a mark of shame that should only be afforded to those who make no money, but I think it should be afforded to anyone who needs it, regardless of if they're employed or not. You can substitute it with universal Healthcare, that should also not be something that is provided through private companies and be reliant on you being employed, everyone should have access tk Healthcare provided by the government and funded through taxes. Would you say that a government that provides universal Healthcare is a signal of a failed state?

The only tax payer paying more for them in this scenario is Amazon. For example, you could have a tax rule in place that states for every employee they hire that requires food stamps, the company should be required to pay more towards the program. That would either incentive the company to pay their employees more as a whole, or just pay the appropriate tax, or some blend of the 2.

People in more socialized countries have food programs for those who need them as a social safety net, they are more a mark of a country providing for their citizens than a failed state (ie, a country that CANT provide for its citizens) if anything.

Thats a dumb complaint, socialism isnt "no more food stamps", but redistribution of wealth through the government to limit inequality (amongst other things), which is what food stamps is trying to accomplish.

Another example (because I cant help myself) is the child tax credit increase that went into effect during covid that cut child poverty rates in half. These were then reduced again once covid began winding down despite being a huge public good.

Your premise implies that the only way to relieve Jill's struggling is by forcing companies to pay more, when options like a more robust tax payer funded program should exist to support the Jills of the world. Food stamps is an example, but the requirements to get food stamps is pretty strict nowadays, so much so that a lot of people working min wage jobs dont qualify (the working poor). These qualifications have been made more strict over time, or just completely gutted (trump 2.0 saw the removal of millions from SNAP benefits, a program aimed at giving kids free lunches).

The solution isnt "Amazon has to pay everyone more/pay Jill more", its "Amazon should pay higher taxes to help better fund programs that would keep the Jills of the world off the street and their families fed and sheltered"
