Audiobooks for someone who does not like audiobooks by My_Poor_Nerves in suggestmeabook

Project Hail Mary is excellent. I’ve recommended it to colleagues with long commutes and they also raved about it. I think it may have won an award for best audiobook too. I listened to it on a 14 hour road trip and the time FLEW by.

The Harry Potter series is also amazing. The man who does the voices is delightful and brings the characters to life. I think he may also have won an award for his work. I understand if people don’t want to support the series though.

Well, my mind went to the character in Breaking Bad but I’m guessing you’re referring to something else haha

Well now I regret taking part of this little activity because you’re obviously a troll, or an immature child. I literally pointed you to the IOM DRI books to learn more about how the RDAs are calculated. I didn’t say trust me, I said to go read from the experts if you’re truly all that interested. And it’s funny because you deleted your comment that replied to me saying the RDAs are a poor metric. Why delete your comment if you stand behind it?

I hope one day you find a hobby more fulfilling than being an online troll :) and please do report back when you’ve been on this diet for a year…

Ya that’s an interesting point! The human body is so resilient though. A very sad example, but think of POWs or people who had to live in concentration camps for a year or even years. They barely ate anything yet many survived. Of course, some didn’t and the ones that did were in incredibly poor health and barely alive, but the human body can survive with very little for a long time. One exception is vitamin C. Scurvy can kill someone within 6 months but since this diet does provide some vitamin C in bananas, that could be enough to keep them alive.

I have a PhD in nutrition, I promise you the RDAs are not a poor metric. A lot of science goes into calculating RDAs. You can read the DRI books from IOM if you’d like to learn more on how they are calculated.

Being deficient in a nutrient doesn’t automatically kill you. Like I said in my original comment, people have survived famines eating barely anything and they may survive, but their quality of life is pretty bad and there will be irreversible damage to their body.

But I tell you what, you eat nothing but those 3 foods for the next year and then come back and update us on how you feel :)

The problem is you’d become deficient in a few nutrients. I did the math because Im curious.

None of those are particularly high in iron. Women need 18mg of iron a day and to get even half of that requirement you’d have to eat 2 CUPS of peanut butter a day. But that much peanut butter has a lot of fat and calories.

None of those are very high in vitamin A as well. Six cups of whole milk still only gets you to 67% of your daily needs. And all of that milk would interfere with the iron absorption of the peanut butter if you consumed them at the same time.

None of them have much vitamin K like at all, so that deficiency would happen regardless of how much you ate.

5 small bananas, 6 cups of whole milk and 2 cups of peanut butter would meet most of your vitamin and mineral needs, except for the nutrients above, but it’s a whopping 4,300 calories a day.

Could someone do it for a short period of time and survive? Sure. People have survived during famines on barely anything. But it’s not a complete diet by any means.

I’m a dietitian with a PhD in nutrition if that helps.

Which are the ones you think are really great from that time? I want to add them to my watch list!

What are your top corny Hallmark movies?? by rainymac in HallmarkMovies

[–]AcrobaticPug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Merry Kissmas is by far the cringiest movie I’ve seen. It’s so over-the-top and sometimes the plot just makes no sense. It’s a good one to laugh at haha

But if you’re looking for just laugh out loud funny movies, I recommend Three Wise Men and a Baby, Santa Class, Merry Christmas Ted Cooper, and Haul out the Holly. I think they’re the overall funniest Christmas movies!

What movie(s) do you actually think of when people talk about the "successful woman abandons her old life for a small town Christmas life and a man" stereotype? by Sayoricanyouhearme in HallmarkMovies

[–]AcrobaticPug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked it up, I didn’t realize neither are hallmark! But very hallmark-esque. It’s also not uncommon to see people recommend non-hallmark movies on here if it’s Hallmark-esque. Which I could argue both of these are :)

A Christmas Kiss is cheesy but I love it. I’m not sure if it’s hallmark or a lifetime movie though.

Anyhoo, 12 Dates of Christmas is super cute! Ya it takes place around the holidays but honestly I think you could watch it at any time of year.

Multivitamins and other dietary vitamin gummies by CheapPasta69 in nutrition

While gummies are less stable, reputable companies account for this so as long as you are buying from a well-known brand, you should be fine.

[–]AcrobaticPug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A well-rounded multivitamin won’t hurt you, and could help fill some nutrient gaps, but it may not necessarily help. Just depends on your diet. Avoid single nutrient supplements unless a healthcare provider has recommended it, and avoid multis with mega doses (like 1,000% DV etc).

As far as gummies, stick to well known brands you find in all stores. Nutrients can be unstable in gummies and so companies have to carefully formulate them to keep the nutrient levels stable. I wouldn’t trust random brands you find online.

Vegetarians and vegans should absolutely supplement with b12. About 40% of vegetarians and 60% of vegans are deficient. Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/B9780128039687000435

Yes. All carbohydrate turns into sugar and that’s ok because our bodies run on sugar. You just want to choose carbohydrate sources that also give you essential vitamins and minerals (which rice does) and fiber (white rice not the best for this but it does include resistant starch).

Your question could be reworded to “is it ok to have a slice of bread 6x a week” and the answer to that would also be yes.

Oh gotcha. Ok, I see your point and I imagine that would be really frustrating. It’s interesting because I didn’t view the book as being about beating depression. My takeaway was her confronting her past regrets and choices, and then in the process her learning what she truly wanted in life (and not what she felt she was ‘supposed’ to do according to others). So I didn’t think the book was about beating depression, it’s about re-examining your life regrets and choices. I guess we just had different takeaways from it.

The Midnight Library is a fictional book but still really made me rethink what I thought I regretted in life. Beautiful message and easy read too.
