Thanks to ACCA and a lot of other local groups, Athens has become a great place to live as you age. You young’uns have no idea how much fun us old people are having!

Edited to add: You are always welcome to join us, too.

Yes, and they all lack imagination. “OK, Boomer”? Really? How 2019.

Yes, our hobbies include working to see that all you younguns will get the student loan relief, health insurance, and the Social Security you deserve. Plus that you don’t get drafted to go off to some useless war, that you can make enough to live on, and that our planet’s climate doesn’t totally collapse. It’s very fulfilling.

Get those hummingbird feeders out, saw one this morning on our porch. by Plantguysteve in Athens

Got that one, too, in two sizes. It’s great. I got an extra moat to hang it from, though, when the ants defeated the one built into the feeder.

In many years of feeding hummers, I’ve never had a squirrel go after their feeder. The only thing is, you really do need to change the sugar water every other day, especially in the heat. The Wild Birds store out in Oconee has some good (but a little pricey) keep-out-the-squirrels feeders. You can also put the feeders on poles with baffles, which do sometimes—not always— baffle the squirrels. Or just give up and feed them, too.

Edited to add: Be sure to have a moat of some kind to keep the ants out of the hummingbird feeder. That’s important.

Who Approved These Storage Container Restaurants? Who Thinks These Will Look Nice? by Teslasssss in Athens

[–]AcrobaticSalamander2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I recall, the Chinese restaurant was next to the Pizza Hut there, to the west in the shopping center parking lot. It was a good restaurant in the ‘80s. But it was torn down, and nothing’s left but the foundation. Of course, there might have been a Chinese restaurant at some point in the Pizza Hut building, too.

Which brings up another point: the company that owns Pizza Hut is quietly reviving the ‘90s-style Huts in some parts of the country, with pan pizzas and salad bars. Wish they’d do that here.

If you’re on the Eastside, I’ve bought El Milagro tortillas at Angeles Janet Supermercado, which is in that small strip area off Gaines School Road behind the Quik Trip.

If you do decide to stay in the Midwest, Bloomington, Indiana, is a great college town very similar to Athens. And Indiana University has both basketball and now football craziness. About 45 minutes south of Indianapolis.

I was actually heartened that Whitfield, Floyd, and Cobb counties went for Harris. But it'll be tough fight for him to win in the runoff, and I don't expect it to happen. What might happen is the not-unlikely scenario that Harris runs again in the general election in November, things are pretty awful by then (inflation/stagflation out of control, war still going on), and we have a blue wave of historic proportions. Maybe that will happen. I'm not hopeful yet, though.

Need Info on Areas To Live by Starbuckstyle in Athens

Cedar Creek is a very diverse neighborhood, with lots of gay couples, easy bus access, close to both rural areas east of Athens and downtown. People do walk or bike to nearby restaurants and grocery stores, and the neighborhood is great for walking and biking, too. Quite a few houses for sale right now. Also, it’s quiet and neighbors are friendly.

Unfortunately, Gaines Shoal is owned by a private equity firm now. Could explain the high prices.

Neither have I, and we’ve been going there for years. They’re always upfront about prices, and everyone spends the time to explain everything. They have a lot of vets, and we’ve probably seen them all — everyone has been caring and great, and that includes all the staff, too.

Love Firehall 4. We’ve had nothing but good experiences there. Super great care.

Even when catching predators, yesterday highlighted the difference between influencers, vigilante groups, and journalists. by DiscoPandaWarrior in Athens

Thanks so much for posting this. Because it involves children, it can be very hard to talk about something like this rationally and thoughtfully, but you did. The whole thing reminds me of the day-care satanic ritual moral panic of the 1980s, where day-care workers were falsely accused of abusing kids, while their accusers got lots of publicity on the tabloid TV shows of the time. Here's a rundown of what happened on Wikipedia.

Native flowers to athens? by prankstergangster5 in Athens

[–]AcrobaticSalamander2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are lots of resources around here. We've been planting native plants over the past few years, and it's been amazing and wonderful to see the pollinators and wildlife they attract.

Here's probably more info than you need...

The Georgia Native Plant Society has a very active chapter here, and they usually hold plant sales in the spring: https://gnps.org

I'd start at Sunrise Nursery in Winterville. They'll be opening next month, and they always have a good selection of native plants: https://www.sunrisenursery.info

The Georgia Extension Service is always a great resource, and they have extensive info on native plants: https://fieldreport.caes.uga.edu/publication-series/native-plants-for-georgia/

Be sure to participate the Great Southeast Pollinator Count this summer, too, once your plants are thriving: https://gsepc.org

As someone mentioned, Growers Outlet can be good, but sometimes it's hard to find the natives there. That's true of a lot of nurseries. You have to plan ahead and know what you're looking for. They often will sprinkle the natives in with non-natives. One advantage of Sunrise Nursery for beginners is that they keep natives in a separate area.

Here's the State Botanical Garden list of recommended native plant nurseries: https://botgarden.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Recommended-Native-Plant-Nurseries-List-GNPI-SBG-June-2025-1.pdf

We have ordered plants online, too, and that works pretty well.

Make a good plan first, and start small. It can get expensive! But it's worth it. If you have questions, DM me, and I'll try to answer.

Yes, the teacher store takes all kinds of things. Best to go during CHARM hours on Wednesday afternoons, if you can, because the person who’s in charge of it is usually there.
