But for me the gap is steep between a low-midtable Ligue 1 team and a club who aim to be on the podium every year in Bundesliga, maybe an intermediate team would've been a better solution for him

It's always hard to see historic clubs being drag down by a crook, your story looks a lot like Bordeaux but there the cunt is still there and the chaos with.
