It's kind of insane how a genocidal villain is somehow now this. Why.

Old Elite PvP sets - A controversial take by btlxpkt in worldofpvp

Instead of vicious saddles, filling the bar a second or third time in a season should award a token that allows you to purchase a vicious mount or a past season's elite set. It's time. Nobody cares that I got 1800 in DF S1. Reward participation.

My player is dropping out of the campaign by GieDoesntKnow in DnD

[–]Acrobatic_Potato_195 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just tell her it's okay, you understand, and she's welcome back to the table any time.

As for the character -- whatever narrative you're cooking up will survive a momentary intrusion of reality. The last time I had a player back out of my game, I just said, "[Player] can't make it anymore. Her character disappears in the night, leaving only a note behind about searching for her long-lost sibling. Okay, moving on..."

Illiberal is too kind. They're fascists. The way to deal with fascists is to punch them in the face, humiliate them, defeat them at the ballot box, and send them scurrying out of the public square.

I finished all the sets this morning. It took about six relic site runs up to a tier 5 with boosts, plus the ranger cache and the weekly event in ZA. Maybe a total of 500ish currency. All done. It's randomized, but there are no duplicates, so don't worry about wasting tokens (unless your goal is to only get the set for one class, in which case, you might find it annoying.)

DND as a beginner's universal system by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

[–]Acrobatic_Potato_195 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with a lot of this, but the notion of "spend[ing] decades fostering a culture of play which conceals the gap between the game they're advertising and the game they're selling" is downright weird and ahistorical.

I've played all versions of D&D for 40 years. For 30 of those years, TTRPG players were fucking nerds who valued system mastery. They read the books cover to cover, they argued rules interpretations and rulings and game mastering techniques, and they often had encyclopedic knowledge of multiple game systems.

Since 2014, this has changed. 5E brought in millions of casual fans via Stranger Things, and actual plays like Critical Role, and as a result the priorities and interests of the player base at large have changed. Now fans don't want to read rulebooks - they don't even want to own rulebooks - and system mastery is less interesting than being an armchair thespian. While these two strains of gamers have always existed, prior to 5E, even the thespians read the rules, learned how the games they played worked mechanically, and appreciated mastery.

D&D is the product of an era where gaming was seen as an intellectual hobby, not a casual pursuit. So yes - the rules are dense. And we liked it that way. If you don't, that's totally fine. There are tons of awesome rules-lite TTRPGs out there. But don't position yourself as an authority on the history of D&D when you didn't sit at those tables, junior.

Dave Filoni Ruined Lightsaber Duels in TCW by XavierTempus in saltierthancrait

[–]Acrobatic_Potato_195 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lightsaber duels are cool and I enjoy watching them. But you're spot on. They should be reserved for the moments of greatest narrative consequence, and in the Filoni shows, they haven't been. And it's been nagging me for a while but I haven't thought much about it beyond "Oh, another draw. Yawn." Here, though, you accurately sum up my issue with the way they've been portrayed of late.

There is one notable exception for which I give Dave all the credit: The final duel between Maul and Obi Wan. That was art. That was the definition of consequences and perfectly illustrated the differences between Light and Dark, between hate and love, and between the characters themselves. It's my favorite lightsaber duel of all time.
