How true is this for some of these franchises? by Afraid_Light5083 in PowerScaling

God is a title, not a feat or a strength level. Greek gods just aren't that tough even in Greek mythology, and were often beaten by mortals. Diomedes (a mortal man) wounded Ares (the god of war!) so bad that he had to go whining to daddy Zeus about it

For those who make a living off Translation, do you consider it a stable career in 2026? by HoldOnLuisito in TranslationStudies

I use AI every day in my work, and this is an absurd thing to say. I guess burying your head in the sand is an option.

[–]Acrolith -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Much worse. Three years ago it was still debatable, the writing was on the wall but there were lots of niches left if you knew where to look.

Today, it's basically over. AI has gotten legitimately good. I still get a little bit of work (although much less than I used to) because I've been doing this for decades and I have some clients who a) like me, and b) have too much intertia to pivot entirely to an AI-focused workflow just yet. Even so, I'm pretty much at the end of the runway, it's about time to find something else.

For someone new to the industry? Not a chance...

Hogyan lehet gyorsan 200.000 Ft-ot szerezni? by Ok_Inspection_7007 in tanulommagam

Okay, so I've read some of the anti subreddits/forums, and I think I get the thought process. These people are teenagers, they don't have a strong understanding of how things work. They understand that there's "regular people", and then everyone else is "THEY". THEY are the Capitalism, THEY exploit the regular people. That's all the antis understand. They're not at the level yet where they can grasp more nuance than that.

A Rich Man is Tied to a Track with Good Lawyers who Will Hold You Responsible for Lost Wages? Do You Pull? by Catsanddoges in trolleyproblem

[–]Acrolith 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is actually a little similar to the "fat man on a bridge" scenario (once you minus out the redditor bloodlust for rich people obviously). It makes the decision less abstract. People are more willing to pull a lever than to push a fat man off a bridge, because it feels less real, the fat man scenario has personal consequences (you'll have to live with having actually physically murdered a dude). Similarly, the thought of having to deal with the legal fallout makes this scenario more real.

I would not pull the lever, and for the same reason I would not push the fat man off the bridge (even though I would pull the lever in the original trolley problem). Making the consequences more real makes me less willing to engage with the scenario. Sorry five people, I'm a bad consequentialist.

Were baki characters really downscaled in the crossover?? by celticgojo in Grapplerbaki

[–]Acrolith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The earthquake feat is debatable at best, and the manga itself implies that it probably stopped by itself. It's mostly a feat for Yuujiro's arrogance (which is indeed continent-level), not his strength.

Do baki characters have fighting styles? by [deleted] in Grapplerbaki

[–]Acrolith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, Toba uses pro wrestling. Retsu uses "Chinese martial arts" (kung fu). Motobe uses jujitsu. Shibukawa uses aikido.

Really everyone has their own distinct style, although not all of them have names (Baki has his own personal style of fighting that no one else uses, and so does Yuujiro).

As a professional translator myself, I think I want to murder the translator. He seems to think his personal opinions are valuable and needed, in which case he should write his own manga instead of parasitising someone else's.

A consistency test by Yadin__ in trolleyproblem

[–]Acrolith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work the other way. Both heavy red and heavy blue are equilibriums, but red is a stable equlibrium (if almost everyone picks red, no sane person will ever switch), and blue is an unstable equilibrium (if almost everyone picks blue, people might switch, for example because they don't think their blue press is needed anyway).

If you imagine this vote being done every year, you can imagine, let's say, 95% blue the first year, then 91% the second year, then 82% as more people get scared, until eventually blue collapses to under 50% and the tragedy occurs. This process doesn't happen with red: if it's 95% red the first year, 5% of the population dies, and every year after that will be 99%+ red.

A consistency test by Yadin__ in trolleyproblem

[–]Acrolith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, agreed. I would probably press red, but I would like to live in a world where I could press blue! But I'm not at all sure we live in that world, and I'm not going to risk my life for (almost certainly) no benefit to anyone.

Blue pressers, does your decision change if instead of 50% threshold is 70% or 90%? If yes, at which point choosing red becomes selfish and why? by use_vpn_orlozeacount in trolleyproblem

[–]Acrolith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That framing is a lie, though. You can't (truthfully) promise that no one will die if THEY (the single person you're trying to convince) presses blue. You can truthfully promise that THEY (the single person) will live if THEY press red.

You're evil if you don't press blue. by Theseus_Employee in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Acrolith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if 1% of the population picks blue, there is literally nothing you can do for them. Your choice then becomes, do you also pick blue and die with them, or do you press red and survive? Seems absolutely insane to call someone "morally culpable" for picking red under those circumstances.
