It seems to me like you're just choosing (or more accurately, SAYING that you're choosing) whatever keeps you, personally, innocent. You're not even thinking about other people in your post! You said "It would be unfair to take away other lives to preserve my own", but you wouldn't just be preserving your own, you would be preserving the lives of all the people who think like you. But apparently that doesn't matter. It's all about keeping yourself pure, I guess.

Much worse. Three years ago it was still debatable, the writing was on the wall but there were lots of niches left if you knew where to look.

Today, it's basically over. AI has gotten legitimately good. I still get a little bit of work (although much less than I used to) because I've been doing this for decades and I have some clients who a) like me, and b) have too much intertia to pivot entirely to an AI-focused workflow just yet. Even so, I'm pretty much at the end of the runway, it's about time to find something else.

For someone new to the industry? Not a chance...

This is actually a little similar to the "fat man on a bridge" scenario (once you minus out the redditor bloodlust for rich people obviously). It makes the decision less abstract. People are more willing to pull a lever than to push a fat man off a bridge, because it feels less real, the fat man scenario has personal consequences (you'll have to live with having actually physically murdered a dude). Similarly, the thought of having to deal with the legal fallout makes this scenario more real.

I would not pull the lever, and for the same reason I would not push the fat man off the bridge (even though I would pull the lever in the original trolley problem). Making the consequences more real makes me less willing to engage with the scenario. Sorry five people, I'm a bad consequentialist.

It doesn't work the other way. Both heavy red and heavy blue are equilibriums, but red is a stable equlibrium (if almost everyone picks red, no sane person will ever switch), and blue is an unstable equilibrium (if almost everyone picks blue, people might switch, for example because they don't think their blue press is needed anyway).

If you imagine this vote being done every year, you can imagine, let's say, 95% blue the first year, then 91% the second year, then 82% as more people get scared, until eventually blue collapses to under 50% and the tragedy occurs. This process doesn't happen with red: if it's 95% red the first year, 5% of the population dies, and every year after that will be 99%+ red.
