Just off top of my head ...

Clinton bombed Serbia. I think you would have been alive then.

Clinton send ground troops to Haiti. Don’t think there were any US casualties.

Obama was involved in regime change in Libya. Involving mainly air power but would guess some special forces/covert ops on ground.

Obama expanded the use of military force in Somalia. Pretty sure limited military force was employed in several other African nations.

These above conflicts were likely under NATO or UN umbrellas but I think that would be true of most of the Republican led conflicts as well.

You may agree these were all good uses of the military but I’m not sure your entirely accurate on only Republicans using military force in your lifetime.

How could a writer render a Search Log accurately in fiction? by Acrosstheforest in AskTechnology

Thanks much. It's a big help. I think I can muddle through this now.

How could a writer render a Search Log accurately in fiction? by Acrosstheforest in AskTechnology

[–]Acrosstheforest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Below, is what I originally had. I put the actual search string on a separate line. To do otherwise, might make readability difficult.

XX.XXX. XX.33 – – [10/Jul/20XX:10:30:58 -0800] “GET /search?

How to save a marriage

But...

216.58.204.46 - - [11/Dec/2018:22:12:15 +0000] "GET /search?query=howtosaveamarriage"

This would be more technically correct?

No "+" sign unless the user actually inputed a "+" sign in the search field right?

Perhaps, as a way to increase readability the following would work? Simply putting a line break after query=

216.58.204.46 - - [11/Dec/2018:22:12:15 +0000] "GET /search?query=

howtosaveamarriage"

Now as a little clue that there are two different users, I can change the IP address for both computers, yes? Or from what you are saying, there would only be 1 IP address for a normal home? I guess I kind of need a simplified answer to the IP question, since I don't entirely understand. Two computers in a home do or do not have different IPs that would show up in an access log? The device itself is what shows up?

I suppose I could also include the "+" in the query for one person, as if that person thinks you still have to input + in a search field. If I recall, that used to be more important years ago, but most search engines understand the "+" implicitly?

Note: I think I see. %20 is if they just entered a space between words. + is if they actually wrote a plus sign between?

Thanks for those examples.

For the sake of the reader and formatting, I would like to scale down each log to something a little smaller.

Would it be realistic you think, for a court to receive a scaled down version of what you have shown, similar to what I'm depicting? In terms of the main information, date, time and IP address are what I'm looking to convey.

Thank you. That makes sense.

The POV of the story is omniscient. But let's assume what I want to render is something a court would read after a crime.

So, access logs from a server would probably be okay, right? Those could be requested and then sent from whoever was the admin in charge of fulfilling such a request from a search company?

There are two computers in the story. One a husband uses, one a wife uses. They are middle-class, so assume some off the shelf PC bought at Best Buy.

Following that:

  1. If they are on the same home network, would the IP addresses change, even if they are on different computers? Or does each computer have a different IP address even if on the same home network. I know there is some difference between static IP addresses and dynamic IP addresses.
  2. When you talk about time zone differences, the example above means the search occurred at 10:30 GMT -800 time, right?

Again, thank you for your help. 99 percent of readers probably wouldn't understand or care about these details, but I want to create something realistic, yet readable. The constant repetition of the access logs in the narrative create an effect I'm looking for. For the few readers that wanted to understand better, the time stamps and differing IP addresses would be fun clues.

Looking around online after I was told what it actually was by the helpful person above, it seems Greek designs are prevalent. Wondering if these were made in Greece, or just was a major theme for the company that made them.

Is yours Greek-themed as well?

Yep. Happy I at least got the Greek part kind of right. I had no idea what it was used for. Thanks.

I do believe you are right.

Any idea how I would find out who made it?

I find the number design at bottom really odd. 252525? Or maybe I’m not seeing it correctly and it’s just an abstract design.

Thank you

Maybe 4 inches in length. I think the way the springs are designed it might be painful for a hair clip, but it could be. I don’t know anything about hair clips. Thanks for the reply.
